00:00 Wild mushrooms are front of mind for many people following the suspected mushroom poisoning
00:06 of two couples in Leangatha in Victoria's east.
00:09 But it's here in the bustling heart of Melbourne that dangerous mushrooms have sparked a warning
00:15 from the council.
00:16 The City of Melbourne has told the ABC its park rangers frequently monitor the municipality
00:21 for poisonous mushrooms including the death cap and yellow staining varieties which are
00:26 known to grow in Victoria during autumn.
00:28 It was in May the death cap and yellow staining mushrooms were first spotted here on the banks
00:33 of the Yarra, prompting council to install this temporary sign which is still in place
00:38 as the potentially deadly mushrooms continue to grow.
00:41 The sign warns passers-by that mushrooms can be extremely toxic to humans and pets if eaten.
00:47 So the advice from the health department is to steer clear of wild mushrooms unless you're
00:52 an expert and if you suspect someone's eaten a poisonous mushroom to contact the Victorian
00:57 Poison Information Centre immediately.
01:00 Concerns about pets should be reported to the Animal Poison Centre straight away.
