00:00 Joining us now with more on Hillary is AccuWeather California expert meteorologist Ken Clark from
00:06 Rancho Cucamonga in California.
00:08 Ken with AccuWeather for over 40 years.
00:11 Ken has been a resident of California in Rancho Cucamonga.
00:15 Right Ken?
00:16 Back in 1995, 1995.
00:23 So Ken, not rare, not, I wouldn't want to say it's unprecedented, but it's certainly,
00:30 would we say unusual or rare for what we're dealing with here tonight?
00:36 Highly unusual for certain.
00:37 There's no doubt about that.
00:39 It's only been four tropical systems move into Southern California in history.
00:44 So it isn't unprecedented, but it is rare.
00:47 And so is the precipitation is bringing.
00:50 Yeah, let's take a look at that Ken really quickly here.
00:52 The water vapor loop, and we were just talking with our hurricane expert Dan Kowlowski, and
00:57 he said, if you know, if you track this and I've seen this as well, that moisture plume
01:02 from on the Eastern side of Hillary, you can track that all the way well into the tropics.
01:08 So this is as moist and as wet as it can get in the Southwest and California for any time
01:14 of the year.
01:16 For any time of the year.
01:17 We've already set some records for the amount of moisture in the atmosphere across the Southwest
01:22 and it's just unprecedented.
01:24 The amount of moisture that we have.
01:26 This is why we're seeing so many heavy rain amounts.
01:29 Yeah, take a look at the rainfall, Ken, and you can see that rain band.
01:33 It's a concentrated area of rain from the coastal California just across Ventura County
01:38 and back, let's say into the just to the west of Palm Springs and the Southern and then
01:46 the Southern California deserts here.
01:48 That's like a fire hose of rain going what in the Kern County, Los Angeles, Ventura County
01:52 in the Southern Sierra.
01:54 That's right, and this is not untypical of any tropical system, whether it's here or
01:58 in the East Coast.
01:59 A sheared storm is going to have more rain, steady rain on the western side than on the
02:03 eastern side.
02:04 On the eastern side, we have plenty of heavy showers and thunderstorms.
02:07 Yeah, as we take a close in look, Ken, we're also tracking just a short time ago we had
02:12 a tornado warning out for central San Diego County, but it's all about the rain, Ken.
02:17 When you take a look at the rain amounts here that we're projecting, this is going to cause
02:20 massive flooding.
02:22 Yeah, Palm Springs had 0.91 inches of rain in one hour a little bit ago.
02:28 That's a record amount of rainfall in one hour for Palm Springs.
02:31 They've had already over two inches of rain there total, also a monthly record for August.
02:36 Yeah, they average about a little over four and a half for the entire year.
