00:03 Good evening, Philippines.
00:16 My name's Monique Tizon, and I will be your host this evening
00:19 for the recap of the major events and newsmakers
00:22 of the past here at home and elsewhere in the planet.
00:26 We begin with Mother Nature and her elements
00:28 of wind, rain, fire, and high heat,
00:31 laying waste and ruin with the monsoon and typhoons
00:34 Hana and Goring, leaving roads and highways underwater
00:38 in regions and cities of Luzon mainland,
00:40 putting tens of thousands huddled in evacuation centers
00:44 and destroying crops, property, and infrastructure
00:47 worth tens to hundreds of millions.
00:50 Over the weekend in the paradise island of Maui,
00:53 yet another elderly and homegrown Filipino,
00:56 or what remains of him, is found in the ashes of Lahaina
01:00 after an exhaustive search by first responders
01:03 with help from cadaver-sniffing dogs.
01:06 The discovery of Salvador Coloma's remains
01:09 brings to three Filipino casualties
01:11 of the infernal wildfire that raised most of the island
01:15 in the second week of August.
01:17 In Greece, the raging waters of a river that overflowed
01:21 and swept everything in its way and spilled over
01:24 to the streets, leaving them underwater
01:26 and residents holed up at home and unable to leave.
01:30 Halfway around the world in South America
01:33 and Amazon country, a powerful hurricane or cyclone
01:37 makes landfall in Brazil to leave at least 21 dead
01:41 and more expected to be found
01:43 as search and rescue efforts kick off.
01:45 Over in the Sunshine State, Hurricane Idalia
01:48 leaves the city of Tampa and other counties and cities
01:51 in her path in a mess, leaving them unindated
01:54 and need to waste deep waters
01:57 and people in kayaks and flotation devices
01:59 moving from points A to B and putting communities
02:03 without power and living in the dark.
02:06 Not to be outdone, Typhoon Goring brings widespread misery
02:10 to at least 80,000 families or 300,000 individuals
02:14 in the Cordilleras, in Locos, Mimaropa,
02:17 the central plains of Luzon, Calabarzon, the NCR,
02:21 and even as far as Western Visayas.
02:24 At least 10,000 families or 38,000 people
02:27 sought refuge and evacuation sites,
02:30 while 30,000 more shacked up with kin or friends.
02:34 On the flip side, it was just announced yesterday,
02:36 September 6th, that this year posted the hottest period
02:40 of summer on record ever.
02:43 Yet another proof of Mother Nature's payback
02:45 over mankind's dereliction to take care of her
02:49 and an ominous sign of even worse things up ahead
02:52 if people on the planet still don't pay heed.
02:55 And when rain falls without letup
02:58 and drenches cities and towns, submerging roads
03:00 or turning them into rivers,
03:02 it also brings an unseen killer in the water.
03:05 A rodent-borne disease and three regions
03:08 in the Luzon mainland are seeing surges
03:10 in leptospirosis cases and ultimately claimed 359 lives
03:15 thus far this year.
03:17 But while the skies wept and the wind blew hard here,
03:20 there, and yonder, winning the peace throughout the planet
03:23 is a far-fetched reality as war is still waged in Ukraine
03:27 with Russia ramping up attacks in the air
03:29 and counter-offensives by Ukraine
03:32 into Russian-held territories.
03:34 In Gabon and Africa, yet another former democratic state
03:37 falls under authoritarian rule
03:39 with the latest power grabbed by a military group
03:42 that put its duly constituted authority
03:44 that has ruled the country for 55 years
03:47 and one of his sons under house arrest for alleged treason.
03:51 This latest coup d'etat drew alarm and sharp rebuke
03:54 from the African Union and Nigeria
03:56 over what they call contagious autocracy.
04:00 But while military takeovers and armed conflict
04:02 raged in Africa, Europe,
04:03 and a more familiar personal rage went on full display
04:06 over the weekend on a road in the megacity
04:09 when an ex-cop temper flew off the handle
04:12 in a minor traffic spat with a biker.
04:15 Caught on camera up close by a motorist
04:18 and from afar by CCTV,
04:20 the ex-cop loses control of himself to assault the biker
04:24 and pull a concealed handgun on him.
04:26 His actions have led to a police chief
04:28 stepping down from his post and a Senate hearing
04:31 where he is upgraded even more
04:33 for making false allegations under oath
04:36 and in spite of receiving the olive branch of peace
04:38 and forgiveness from the guy he sought to abuse.
04:42 Yet even as amity and peace remain elusive to countries
04:45 and personalities who wish or even fight to win it,
04:49 people of good intention still persist to pursue,
04:52 promote, and propagate the ways of peace and friendship.
04:56 Much like the latest friendship struck between the country
04:59 and the world's largest democracy,
05:01 this coming together hits birds with a single stone,
05:05 a maritime cooperation pact,
05:06 and a deal to supply the country with its staple grain
05:09 to fill out the shortfall or for more buffer stock.
05:13 With a measure of food security achieved
05:15 as a result of the India rice supply deal,
05:17 the president heated out for a big huddle
05:19 with the ASEAN alliance in Jakarta to kick off this week.
05:23 With a laundry list of trade, investment,
05:26 and economic cooperation concerns in mind,
05:29 the president would lead the charge for a pact
05:31 or agreement on proper demeanor
05:33 in the contested waters of the South China Sea.
05:36 But first, the president joined all his peers
05:39 in the alliance for a unified response to a treaty
05:42 to wayward member Myanmar over its continued
05:45 authoritarian ways and crackdown on dissenting citizens
05:49 using violent and undemocratic methods.
05:53 In addition, the president did not hesitate
05:55 for even a fleeting moment to acknowledge
05:58 and accept a chair and even host a 2026 ASEAN summit
06:01 in place of Myanmar.
06:03 Then again, the president, in a powerful message
06:06 on showing restraint and respect,
06:09 underscored the need to resolve the growing militarization
06:12 and illegal expansion, plus the underlying disrespect
06:15 for the rule of law by the ways of peace and diplomacy.
06:19 In doing so, the president showed strength and weakness
06:22 by his declaration that co-ASEAN nations share
06:26 and the growing chorus of support
06:27 from elsewhere in the planet.
06:29 As the 2023 ASEAN summit and related meetings
06:32 come to close this afternoon,
06:34 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. accomplished
06:37 what he set out to do, and then some.
06:39 He has put the world on notice of the growing crisis
06:41 in the South China Sea and put forth a peaceful
06:45 and diplomatic resolution that has won support
06:47 from the alliance and from major powers
06:50 and developing states.
06:51 Even more, he has closed a deal with Vietnam
06:54 for a five-year right supply deal that checks out the box
06:57 on food security on the country's staple grain,
07:00 plus a deal on maritime and fish production
07:03 and fishermen protection.
07:05 But most of all, he continues to win the trust
07:08 and confidence of his peers on the world stage
07:11 as they troubleshoot and resolve the major issues
07:13 of conflict by the ways of peace.
07:16 All these as the seasons of peace kicks off
07:18 with a familiar tune signifying the happy holidays
07:21 fast approaching.
