00:00 A bit full up.
00:05 Yeah, we went to dinner, went to dinner. Yeah, it was nice.
00:09 Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to our pre-match press conference to preview our game against Manchester City.
00:15 We'll start off with our own at Sky Sports. Thanks. Good afternoon, Sean.
00:19 First of all, just an update on player availability. Do we have the likes of Inanna, Danjouma, Decorre, Gomez back?
00:26 Not Duke, not Danjouma, not Andre Gomez. He won't be back.
00:33 On a better note, obviously Young, he continues to get fully fit.
00:37 Shaman said he will have had a full week's training with the team, which is good.
00:42 Amadou's been out on the grass today, so he gets back involved and we'll pick the team accordingly.
00:47 But there was better signs, I would say, of progress from the injured players.
00:50 And Duke's on the grass, not with us, but he's making good progress.
00:53 No other issues from last week?
00:56 No, just an oxybury, but nothing too heavy.
00:59 What's the approach against Manchester City?
01:02 Well, you've got to play well, that's for sure. They're in good form, they've got many ways of different changes they can make,
01:08 the depth of their squad and their know-how, so you've got to play well as a start point.
01:13 Usually, you've got to defend well as well. We've done that pretty well this season.
01:18 It is difficult, they're a very, very good side, we all know that, a very talented side.
01:23 So, yeah, I think the mixture's got to be right, you've got to defend well but you've got to play well generally.
01:27 And you've got to take your chances when they come your way.
01:30 Does it go without saying this is the most difficult task of all, given that they've scored in 57 home games on Clonelagh Hill?
01:37 The Premier League's difficult anyway, but I think it's fed so over the last number of seasons.
01:42 They've shown their prowess and, like I say, they do the hard yards as well.
01:46 They work hard as well as being a fine football side.
01:49 There's a lot of good to like about them, but you've got to play them all, so we'll certainly go there and take it on.
01:54 And are you banned from the touchline?
01:57 I believe I am, yeah.
01:59 How does that impact...?
02:02 It's just working with your staff more closely.
02:05 The earpiece and all that's not the same as being down there at pitch level.
02:08 For me, I quite like being at pitch level, obviously, and that kind of connection with the team.
02:13 One of them things, what's done is done.
02:16 I think it was booked last week for protesting about the non-award of a penalty.
02:19 No, it wasn't. It was actually the second foul on Beto.
02:22 The first one was the non-penalty, and as everyone knows, we haven't had one.
02:26 And then the second one was the foul on the edge of the box on Beto, which I thought was the worst decision, to be honest.
02:32 And then the challenge is, as I said, the technical area and being respectful of the game and all that sort of stuff.
02:39 Ours are tiny, they're about six feet, and six feet from the... There's no room anyway.
02:44 So you step one yard and you're in the other technical area, and some managers running all over the place down the pitch and all sorts.
02:50 But no booking, so who knows? I don't know what the rules are anymore.
02:53 I try and be natural and just respond to what happens right in front of my eyes.
02:57 Is that one of the strangest stats so far, that you haven't had a penalty this season?
03:01 Well, it must be up amongst them, because we've certainly had enough calls for them.
03:05 One down at time pulling shirts, the other one the other day I thought was one.
03:09 And I've seen the ones that go against us, and I don't know what kind of contact is contact anymore.
03:15 I think a lot of people in the game are nervous around contacts in the box for the wrong reasons.
03:21 If someone's touching their shoulder and their leg's buckled, I've never let that one out, but they give penalties.
03:26 And then Beto's clearly pushed off the ball the other day. No penalties.
03:30 Will you agree that he gave a penalty against you in the games you've had with him so far this season?
03:36 Well, I don't think he'll have that on his mind either, have I?
03:39 Okay. Idrissa Garnaghey came straight back into the team, was an outstanding performance.
03:45 How important is he going to be from now until the end of the season?
03:47 He did really well. He'd flown back in. We gave him a down day. He only had one day's training back with us.
03:52 I thought he gave a very good performance.
03:55 We certainly need his experience and his belief in what he does and rubbing off on others.
04:00 Certainly with a performance like that, that's for sure.
04:02 And for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, do you feel for him, in what looked like his goal last week to end that long drought?
04:09 Yeah, he's had a couple. I mean, the one down at Tottenham, we were amazed on the VAR decision on that,
04:15 because that's a goal for him and the other day was one of those things, 'Jack on the way in' and that's it.
04:20 But no, his performances have been good and I think he's growing into his performances more and more.
04:24 So it'll come. Goals will come for him.
04:26 He's still making a vital contribution in games, isn't he?
04:29 Yeah, he's working hard. I think his true belief in his own fitness and his body is getting stronger all the time.
04:38 So I think that can only be helpful. The key is for getting in the right areas.
04:42 People have been saying about his chances, some of the quality chances, but at the end of the day, he's getting the chances.
04:46 So they will go in.
04:48 Any feedback regarding the appeal? I know we're expecting a decision this month, possibly by the end of next week.
04:55 Yeah, that's just broad guidelines on the appeal, as you suggest, but nothing, no use.
04:59 So nobody whispers in your ear first?
05:02 No, they didn't last time, so I don't know why that would change.
05:05 So still hopeful?
05:07 We'll just wait and see. I can't be judging that. Nothing to do with me once it's in their hands.
05:12 Thanks very much. Good.
05:14 Sean, good to see you. Three back-to-back Premier League draws. Do you feel the hard yards are being made and is moving towards what will be a couple of big afternoons?
05:27 Well, I think, you know, we haven't found that win, but we're looking solid in our performances.
05:33 But before that one fall on the trot, if you had it all together, you think it's a healthy points return.
05:37 And then if you had the bigger picture and the 10 points on, then you go, that is a healthy return.
05:40 So, you know, it makes news really when people chunk these games down.
05:45 But I know the bigger picture. Going back to your point, clean sheets are a good thing.
05:49 You've got to take your chances as well. I think we have created good chances in amongst them, clean sheets.
05:53 But it is a good marker. You know, if you're defending right as a team and you're working hard, then you've got to, obviously, you increase your chance of winning games.
06:01 So we're right in every game. There's been a couple that got away from us this season, but not many.
06:05 We've been right in every game.
06:07 Can I highlight the performances of Jarrod Brantway and his progression, his development, getting his first goal last weekend?
06:13 All of that must be a huge positive for the football club.
06:16 Yeah, I think, to be honest, I think Taki alongside him has been excellent.
06:19 And I think he's a solid professional at this level and what he does.
06:23 And I think that's helpful for Jarrod, Jordan behind him with his experience.
06:27 You know, Miko's playing ever so well.
06:29 You know, we've had a few injuries at right-back, but when required, different people have done well on that.
06:33 And the unit's been strong.
06:35 So I think that's helped Jarrod.
06:37 He's certainly enjoying his football and that's what we need to continue doing.
06:40 Great for him to get his goal last week.
06:42 I know you were really pleased with how your side mixed it up against Spurs last weekend.
06:45 Your threat from set-piece is obvious, but how your side pressed as well.
06:49 That is crucial, that is essential at a place like Manchester City to try and get it all right.
06:54 Well, you've got to press wisely.
06:56 You know, that's the challenge of the pressing game, if you like.
06:59 You've got to press wisely. It's got to be by design because they're a good outfit.
07:03 They're used to it, don't forget. That's how they play and they've played against many sides that press.
07:06 So I think you've got to be clever with your pressing.
07:09 You can't just go, 'Chris Baggs in the wind'.
07:11 You know, it's got to be an organised press.
07:13 And I think the players have shown they can do that this season.
07:16 It is more difficult with the way Manchester City play because they're used to teams doing that.
07:19 So they're well-versed and practised in trying to break down teams who do that.
07:24 So, yeah, maybe a shift in our game plan, maybe a shift in our thinking. We'll see.
07:28 You've had a win to the draw, therefore, in the last 12 in all competitions.
07:32 Thanks for that.
07:33 Harland's back, De Bruyne are back. They're both starting.
07:37 They certainly started against Brentford again.
07:40 How do you begin to try and contain Manchester City?
07:45 Well, it's part of the challenge of playing the top teams.
07:48 You know, they're quite obviously up there for a reason, once again.
07:52 And they've got sort of strength in depth. They've got strength in how they work.
07:56 They're a great outfit, without a shadow of a doubt.
07:58 But, like I say, take all these games on.
08:01 That's the mentality we want to continue to build here.
08:03 No matter who you're playing against, taking on with that clear-mindedness to go and focus on you.
08:07 You have to pay attention to the opposition, quite obviously.
08:10 But you've got to focus on you and your performance.
08:12 And I think so far this season we've done well on that.
08:14 And it's important to remember that, even when you go into play for City.
08:18 Is the psychological part of it as crucial?
08:20 Thinking, 'We can go to the Etihad, we can go to Manchester City'?
08:23 I certainly think you've got to have a group belief that you can challenge these teams.
08:27 And I think being competitive is a start point.
08:29 And performing, you know, and I've spoken endlessly about it with the group.
08:32 That competitive edge in performances, but also that consistency of performances.
08:36 And we've made some ground with that.
08:38 So we've got to go there, like I started this interview.
08:41 You've got to play well.
08:42 Now and again, they might have a soft performance.
08:45 Not too many, but they might do.
08:47 That sometimes happens.
08:48 But you've got to lay your marker down, and that's to play well.
08:51 That's the minimum we've got to do. We've got to play well.
08:53 16 different players in your squad have scored in all competitions this season.
09:02 With the strikers low on numbers, not necessarily about their performances,
09:06 but low on numbers, is that something you've been working on to take the pressure off them?
09:10 No, not really. Nothing to do with taking pressure off anyone.
09:13 It's to do with the mentality that we've been fostering here.
09:16 Anyone can score.
09:18 Everyone's got to go into a scoring position and believe they can score.
09:21 Likewise, we want the same on the balance with the defending side.
09:24 I ask centre-forwards to defend properly. I want the wide players to defend properly.
09:28 So there's a balance to the team ethic.
09:30 But no, it's certainly not about removing pressure.
09:33 Pressure's there for everyone. Pressure's there on strikers all the time.
09:36 I think that's just part of their role, to score goals.
09:39 The same as it is for keepers to keep clean sheets.
09:42 So I think it's more about the mentality as a team to go and score goals.
09:46 I think we've been trying to grow with that.
09:49 I think that mark is a pretty good one.
09:51 You've got a spread of goals across your team,
09:54 but we also want goals from our strikers, of course.
09:56 That adds to it. It's often the focal point of a side.
10:00 If you haven't got that, you've got to find goals.
10:02 We've had spells where we've done that well.
10:04 A lot of work went into getting Nick back fit and making sure he could get a run of games.
10:10 You seem to have solved that issue right now.
10:14 How are you going about getting those numbers up?
10:16 You say there's always pressure on strikers.
10:18 People look at the number of goals at the end of the day, don't they?
10:20 Is there anything extra going on with him at the minute?
10:23 I think he's working hard in training. I think he's doing the right things.
10:27 I think in games he's getting in the right areas.
10:28 That's been shown by his chance count.
10:30 I think it's that belief in that.
10:32 You know it's the old adage.
10:34 I can't remember who it was.
10:36 The day one of the strikers was talking about it,
10:37 sometimes you need one that hits you and goes in.
10:39 Sometimes that just restarts a striker for no other reason.
10:43 I can't remember who it was.
10:44 It was one of the big scorers. It wasn't Shearer.
10:46 Someone who scored a lot of goals.
10:48 I was listening to the discussion.
10:50 Sometimes you do need that.
10:52 You want to do it by design, of course.
10:54 You want a striker who scores a great goal or an important goal or whatever.
10:58 Sometimes it's just one that hits you and goes in.
11:00 That sometimes just breaks it and starts your rescoring again.
11:03 Whatever way it comes, it will come.
11:05 I was going to ask you about Lewis Dobbin.
11:07 He came on from the bench against Spurs and had a real impact pretty quickly
11:11 because of his pace and how he plays.
11:13 How close is he to maybe starting or maybe just getting a bit more game time?
11:17 He's been around it all season.
11:20 He's done well. He did well in pre-season we felt.
11:23 He has got some game time early season, bits and parts of it,
11:26 but he's still developing.
11:27 He's a player who is developing and I think he's got more to come.
11:31 We're enjoying what he's doing.
11:32 He's working very hard in training as well.
11:33 Each one of these little parts of games that he plays,
11:36 it keeps building his belief and I think that's important.
11:39 Jordan picked the nine clean sheets.
11:41 I think we've mentioned this quite a few times.
11:43 He's keeping his tally going.
11:45 When you look at that and given your place in the table,
11:48 I think sometimes there's a bit of confusion
11:49 how have Everton got that many clean sheets but where they are.
11:51 But there's been a points deduction.
11:53 Do you think that shows it's a defensive unit that
11:56 or is it down to Jordan himself?
11:58 I think I'm pretty clear actually that Jordan would consider it to be the unit
12:02 because I think he's a very good guy and we know that with his experience
12:05 and his understanding of his role within a team.
12:08 But I think he likes the fact there's a structure
12:10 and there's a work ethic in front of him.
12:12 You know, he's seen players work across the board
12:14 and I think as a keeper that's a pleasing thing to see.
12:17 So no, I think he's not taking anything away from his own performances
12:21 but I think he'd be fair-minded to suggest the team are working very hard in front of him.
12:31 On the touchline ban, the three yellow cards, which is a punishment
12:36 and presumably is supposed to be a deterrent I suppose.
12:40 Does it give you cause for reflection or is it just something that comes with the token?
12:44 No, I think the only thing I was disappointed in
12:46 are the three really bad decisions from a referee.
12:48 So I've got booked for three really bad decisions
12:50 and I think there should be a bit more tolerance.
12:52 You know, fourth officials there, if they see, if deep down they're thinking
12:55 'The ref might have that one wrong'
12:58 and I don't see why you're booked for it.
12:59 That's the moment when they should use a bit of their game understanding
13:02 and think 'Right, maybe just come back in the air and just say listen,
13:05 you maybe got that one wrong but we need you to just stay in the tango or whatever.'
13:09 I think that can be a calming down moment.
13:11 I didn't think I should get three yellow cards for them moments
13:14 because they are factually bad decisions.
13:15 So sometimes it's a human response when you see a decision,
13:18 especially when it's tight games and the important ones.
13:22 Canarsie away at Liverpool, I think everyone in the stadium knew what was going to happen
13:26 and it didn't.
13:27 So I get booked for that.
13:28 The one the other day, I think everyone in the stadium can see a possible penalty.
13:32 Can't decide for sure but a possible penalty doesn't even get looked at.
13:35 And then 30 seconds or a minute later another foul on the edge of the box
13:38 which is an absolute foul.
13:39 So then you go 'Well, it's a human response.'
13:42 Maybe, I would suggest the force on any given occasion
13:45 could probably realise that.
13:46 They don't have to agree with me but they could maybe go
13:48 'Right, okay, just slow yourself down, you know,
13:50 get back in and just calm the moment down.'
13:52 Whereas if you're going outside your box,
13:54 doing whatever you're doing all the time,
13:56 that's different.
13:57 That's your own fault, your own accord.
13:58 But not when it's something like that, I don't feel.
14:00 There's a lot of talk about improvements to make to the AR
14:03 but is that an area in the relationship that happens between both officials and managers
14:08 or officials and managers?
14:09 When you talk about human response, is that an area that can still be improved?
14:12 Well, it's like all of it at the minute.
14:15 I think the thing that we're all questioning is just consistency and parity.
14:18 You know, the different ways of officiating.
14:20 Of course, they're all human, they're going to have different ways
14:22 but there's so many different ways of games working at the moment
14:25 with the referees' performances and with the idea of this technical area.
14:29 You know, one lives more than the other.
14:31 You see managers running up and down the line, I don't know,
14:33 cheering goals or whatever they do and nothing's done.
14:35 So then you go, 'Well, which one is it then?'
14:37 So I think it's more just the rules have got to be the same for everyone.
14:41 I think that's the key.
14:42 Thanks, Carl.
14:44 Any further questions in the working section before we move on?
