00:00Ok, so when you filmed X, you already knew what was Per's past.
00:05But did you already have an idea for Maxine's future?
00:09No, I knew that if we made a third movie, it would take place in Hollywood
00:12and she would be, you know, making her way into straight pictures,
00:16but I didn't really know anything beyond that.
00:19And when you filmed right on Hollywood Boulevard,
00:22what was the most complicated aspect of that location?
00:26It was hard.
00:27You know, I think to shoot on Hollywood Boulevard and particularly to make it 1980s
00:31and to have all the traffic be, you know, period cars and things like that,
00:36it's an enormous amount of logistics because it's a very busy part of the city.
00:40It's very difficult to permit.
00:41It's very difficult to control.
00:43And then to have as many people driving around, you know,
00:46and resetting all that every time you want to do a new take
00:48and everybody has to match what they did before,
00:52it was a huge endeavor.
00:54And we would have the art department dress things during the day
00:56and then we would shoot at night and then we would change the dressing the next day.
00:59And so it was a very, very, very technically complicated part of the film.
01:04But, you know, it was really important to actually film it there
01:07and to be able to, you know, get that authenticity on screen.
01:10And both X and Pearl are inspired by specific genre and settings.
01:18So what were the references for Maxine?
01:21Well, I mean, there's no really one specific thing.
01:24It's more just kind of like these Hollywood set movies in the 80s was a big part of it.
01:28And, you know, Jallo movies to a certain extent.
01:30And because this movie was less contained than the other two movies
01:34and was more of a kind of noir-ish, like, whodunit type plot.
01:40To me, it was just about embracing the kind of history of L.A.
01:43and L.A. as a character.
01:45And, you know, I think from a reference standpoint,
01:49you know, sometimes we would look at certain movies
01:51just to see what the palette of the colors would feel like and things like that.
01:54Because, you know, Hollywood Boulevard, speaking to your previous question,
01:57is in the 80s, it's only in so many movies.
02:01And there are certain movies like Vice Squad or Angel or things like that
02:06that take place on Hollywood Boulevard for quite a bit.
02:09And they become very good time capsules to look at
02:11for what things looked like back in the day.
02:14Because, you know, you can find some news footage or documentary footage,
02:17but sometimes movies are more reminiscent of what people remember.
02:21And one last question.
02:24How do you define your collaboration with Miragoth?
02:29Well, I mean, we've become, like, partners in crime in a way.
02:32I mean, it's been, it started with one conversation about
02:35would you be interested in playing this character in this movie called X
02:38to then would you be interested in playing two characters in the same movie?
02:42And then would you be willing to stick around for another couple months
02:45so we can make Pearl back-to-back
02:46to now four and a half years later to be finishing this movie?
02:50I mean, it's very surreal and very strange.
02:52But, you know, we hit it off in the beginning
02:53and she's such a dedicated, fearless performer
02:56that she's the right kind of collaborator to make a movie,
03:00but certainly three movies in a row.
03:01You need someone who's very dedicated and that's what she is.
03:04Okay, thank you for your time.
03:07Thank you very much.
