00:03Hello parents, welcome back to Dr. Pedia podcast channel where we explore everything related to
00:10your baby's health and development. Hi, I'm Dr. Prashant Gowda. I'm your neonatologist and
00:16pediatrician, director of DYU Women and Child Care from Bangalore. We are talking about
00:23baby massage. By the way, I'm the first person in India to start a baby spa. The whole idea of
00:32baby spa started because of baby massage giving so much of advantage to the baby with hydrotherapy
00:38making it very soothing, comforting and relaxing for the baby. You might have heard about them,
00:45but is it something you should consider for your little one? Let's dive in. Yes,
00:51baby massage can be very beneficial. It's not just me who is telling. It is a study
00:56which has been done on our ancient age-old practice that is massaging the baby. They help promote
01:05relaxation, they improve circulation, they help improve sensory development and it helps even
01:11to support baby to have a better sleep. Massaging your baby can also enhance bonding between you
01:20and your baby. It's a great way to connect physically and emotionally. The key is to use a
01:27gentle, calm approach. Here are some tips on the best way to massage your baby. Choose the right
01:35time. What is the right time? The best time is when you are tension-free, stress-free and you make
01:42and your time you are comfortable with whatever time baby needs it. When your baby is calm, awake and not
01:50hungry. After a bath or even before bath or before going to bed as well, which works well. Basically,
01:56right time is when you and your baby are comfortable and without any hurry, without any stress, without any
02:03time bound. Use baby safe oils. Choose natural oils because natural things are always the best thing. A gentle
02:13oil like coconut oil or an almond oil or olive oil will help your baby in getting the good nourishment
02:21for the skin. Make sure to test small quantity on their skin first to check for any allergic reaction. If
02:29you
02:29notice any allergic reaction, please avoid putting such oils. Gentle pressure. See, always remember we are
02:39doing massage to give comfort and relaxation and to help sensory stimulation in the baby. We don't have
02:46any intention to send them to any Akhada or make them Pailwan. So, please remember use soft, gentle strokes.
02:55Think of it as a soothing touch. Always be aware of your baby's reaction. If they seem comfortable,
03:04uncomfortable, making them cry, please stop the massage. The fourth important point is focus on key
03:13areas. You can gently massage their legs, arms, back and tummy. Avoid any pressures on their joints and
03:19spine. And please be very, very gentle. Don't break their bone. We do get kids with collarbone fracture
03:27because they would have put pressure on the bone thinking that it's a bulge and they have to make
03:31it flat. Please don't do that. And the other key other, you know, things which we observe is squeezing
03:39the nipple while giving massage. Please make sure that you don't squeeze the nipple. You don't have to
03:44bring out any milk which is not there and cause infection and swelling of the nipple of the baby. Stay
03:49calm.
03:50Your baby can sense your emotion. So, make sure to stay relaxed, calm during the massage. Play some soft music
03:57if you like to create a peaceful atmosphere. Baby massage can be wonderful and it's a way to support your
04:05little
04:05one's growth and create a loving connection and a loving touch. Thanks for listening to Drpedia
