00:00First, we go to Alex Hogan, who is live in Washington, D.C.,
00:02with the latest on the fighting in the Middle East
00:04and the battle for control over the Strait of Hormuz.
00:07Good morning. A new wave of strikes in Iran this morning,
00:10marking the third consecutive night of attacks.
00:12U.S. Central Command says this was a five-hour mission
00:15hitting defense systems, missile and drone sites.
00:22The military says it targeted these positions
00:23to degrade Iran's ability to hit ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
00:28It comes just hours...
00:29This all videos are sent to us by U.S. Central Command on Monday.
00:33After President Trump said yesterday at the White House
00:36that the U.S. will reinstate the blockade.
00:38Listen.
00:39We're putting the blockade back.
00:41And it's a blockade not for anybody but Iran.
00:43In other words, anybody doing business with Iran can't go through.
00:46Everyone else will be able to go through.
00:48So it's a blockade. It's a very strong blockade.
00:50That's what President Trump said.
00:52Blockade more effective against Iran compared to Strait.
00:56That's why we keep the blockade.
00:58The blockade was probably more effective even than hitting them.
01:02But I think the combination is the thing that really does.
01:07All right. All right.
01:08Trump also suggested the U.S. will charge ships for passage,
01:11what the administration has demanded Iran not to do.
01:15The U.N. Convention of the Law of the Seas protects transit through international straits.
01:20So this would be a break from a longstanding American.
01:23This is Trump said that the U.S. will charge ships for passage in a strait.
01:27That's what we are taking a fees, a minimum fees from all the ships to go through from the Strait
01:33of Hormuz.
01:34This is the live video of Monday of all the ships are standing at the rest of that side of
01:39Strait of Hormuz.
01:40Policy. Trump arguing that it's reimbursement for protecting ships with Iran reacting.
01:46The foreign minister firing back with this sarcastic response, writing, quote,
01:50POTUS is absolutely right.
01:51Whoever provides secure and safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz
01:56should be compensated for this service.
01:59Iran has always been the guardian of the strait and will remain so forever.
02:0220% is, of course, too much.
02:05We will be fair.
02:07Damn, U.S. is taking 20%, he said.
02:10Iran launching strikes of its own across the region for another day today.
02:14Gulf countries fielding attacks.
02:16At least eight are wounded and one person is dead after Iran targeted Bahrain, Jordan,
02:21and two others linked to the UAE, two other tankers, I should say.
02:27The U.S. military says more than 50,000 U.S. service members are currently deployed across the Middle East.
02:31Damn, Iran is missileing to the ships in this trade.
02:36This is bad news for everybody going there.
02:39I hope you're loved ones are safe.
02:41Back here in Washington, President Trump will welcome Iraq's new Prime Minister, Ali Ali.
02:47Iraq? Oh, yeah.
02:49Zaidi to the White House later today.
02:51All right.
02:51Carly, Nate, back to you.
02:52I have that blockade resumes at 4 o'clock today.
02:55Alex Hogan, thank you so much for joining us.
02:58All right, Alex.
02:59What's next right now?
03:015.12 on this Tuesday morning.
03:03Welcome back.
03:03The U.S. military launching strikes on Iran for a third consecutive night with President
03:08Trump commenting on the future of the Shreed of Hormuz.
03:11Okay, let's listen to this.
03:13I think in the end we will end up discontrolling the whole thing.
03:18And what they're doing is being very foolish, very stupid.
03:21And they've treated people horribly.
03:23They've killed 52,000 protesters so far.
03:27So, it might be more than that.
03:29But 52,000 is a big number.
03:31You see, 52,000.
03:33Damn, buddy.
03:3452,000 protesters have been killed.
03:36That's a big number.
03:37And it's really a terrible situation.
03:39We'll have it under control very quickly.
03:42And the commander-in-chief also announcing a charge for ships passing through the strait.
03:47Writing on TrueSocial, quote, the USA will be from this point forward known as the guardian
03:52of the Hormuz strait.
03:53But as such, and as a matter of fairness, will be reimbursed at a rate of 20 percent on
03:58all cargo shipped for any cost necessary to do the job of providing safety and security.
04:04I mean, 20 percent is a big, I mean, big thing.
04:07Oh, my God.
04:08To this very volatile section of the world.
04:11The process and formation will begin immediately.
04:14Former Deputy National Security Advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney.
04:17What is happening is that if your ship has 1 million worth of items, the 20 percent is $200,000.
04:26That's what you have to pay as a fee, as a fee to cross the strait of Hormuz.
04:32Steve Yates joins me right now.
04:34Steve, thank you for joining the program.
04:36So this renewed blockade will begin at 4 o'clock today.
04:39We have seen as the intensity has increased, some of the traffic is slowing in the strait.
04:45Is this promise of American security enough to get shipments flowing?
04:50It's a key part of it.
04:52And I think a lot of Americans would see as fundamental fairness that with the United States expending.
04:59It's few, yes.
05:00Heritage Foundation senior fellow is letting us know something.
05:04A great deal of resources in order to provide freedom of navigation.
05:08That it makes perfect sense that we might turn to those who are depending upon us to get their product
05:14to market.
05:15And the big economies that rely on these products getting to them.
05:19I think that's really looking at Europe and Asia as a way to maybe balance the expenditure for the United
05:26States in doing this.
05:27And of course it's important to emphasize this is blockading things coming and going to Iran.
05:33Everything else will have free passage.
05:35And the United States isn't.
05:37This is state of Hormuz.
05:38Also, President Trump said we will end up controlling the state of Hormuz and give it to the Iranians back.
05:46But we have some conditions.
05:47Stopping or shooting any vessels that have to do with that part of the transit.
05:53It's really Iran that is the threat and destabilizer.
05:56And so that part of it, I think, is broadly common sense to a lot of observers.
06:02Iran also wants to impose its own toll system, even trying to get Oman to get on board with sort
06:08of a joint tolling system.
06:10The foreign minister of Iran posted on X.
06:12Take a look at this.
06:13What if posted them?
06:15They're posting so much on X.
06:17They are activists.
06:18Quote, POTUS, President of the United States, is absolutely right.
06:22Whoever provides secure and safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated for this service.
06:30Iran has always been the guardian of the strait and will remain so forever.
06:3420% is, of course, too much.
06:37We will be fair.
06:38They will be taking 15, 10 or 5%.
06:40That's what they say.
06:41Now, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that no country can impose a fee for use of an
06:47international...
06:48International waterway, that's what we're saying.
06:51It's a free of cost.
06:52No can impose this.
06:54Waterway, but as you mentioned, this is at least sold as a reimbursement for money that the U.S. is
06:59spending.
07:00Is this different than what Secretary of State Rubio said?
07:04I mean...
07:05Well, whether it ends up being a toll or a fee charge to commercial vessels, etc.,
07:09it's kind of unclear at this point.
07:11It makes a little bit more sense to me that in the course of our broader economic strategic negotiations...
07:17We have two videos.
07:18This is a live video of the Strait of Hormuz, and this is a marine traffic live video of all
07:24from Monday.
07:25...associations we have with key allies and partners who do and rely upon the United States,
07:30especially those who, during the parts of this conflict, either got in the way of what the United States needed
07:36to do
07:37or just really have failed to show up.
07:39I mean, the leader of France famously suggested that however many boats there are in France,
07:44there would be at least some presence that would...
07:47Also, Trump, the president of U.S., said,
07:50we are reinstating the Iranian blockade.
07:53That's how we win this thing.
07:55Up in front of an international audience, it said that France would uphold the freedom of navigation.
08:00And so at this point in time, where are they?
08:02And if they're not there, it's really the Iranians that are presenting a threat.
08:07It's a little bit of the chutzpah award for them to fire on other vessels and say they're going to
08:12charge a fee,
08:13when it's really the United States that if we had compliance with a very generous deal that had been offered,
08:19there would be no need for any of this at this point.
08:22I think also this is really inviting the allies in the region who have a...
08:27That's what they have.
08:29Okay, allies, we have UAE, Saudi, Oman, Pakistan, and I don't know.
08:34...stake in getting their product out to market,
08:36to share somewhat of the burden in making sure we pin in the true disruptor
08:41to the free flow of goods and peace and stability.
08:44And that, I think, is a part of the good strategy the president has implemented on this.
08:50Again, that renewed blockade begins at 4 o'clock today.
08:52The price of oil at the highest point we've seen in the past four weeks.
08:56Steve Yates, thank you very much for joining the program this morning.
08:59Thank you, everybody.
