00:28new global aggressions.
00:34Iran's Revolutionary War claimed the surprise attacks on a U.S. based in Syria destroying
00:38radar systems and helicopters in retaliation for fallen soldiers in Bampur.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I am Lorena Fong from the Telesur Studios in Caracas,
00:54Venezuela.
00:54We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:15The Government of Venezuela released an updated official report detailing the figures on the
01:20damage, losses and measures taken after the earthquakes that struck on June 24.
01:24According to the official report released on July 16, 2026, the death toll has risen to
01:294,930, while the number of injured remains at 16,740.
01:35Authorities also reported that 6,462 people have been rescued and indicates that 128,324 families
01:43have received assistance and 21,210 people are in temporary camps, while 17,907 families
01:51have lost their homes.
01:52In addition, 956 buildings have been damaged and 190 have collapsed.
01:57Relief efforts have included the distribution of 10,063 tons of food and 26,738,575 liters of
02:07water, while 35,781 people have received medical treatment.
02:11A total of 2,278 international rescue workers are assisting the country, alongside 30,989 deployed
02:19personnel and 31,745 volunteers.
02:23Finally, authorities also reported the establishment of 107 temporary camps and the recording of
02:291,308 aftershocks.
02:38Venezuela's Acting President, Delsi Rodriguez, met with UNESCO Regional Director, Anne Lemestre,
02:43to discuss cooperation in education, culture, science and heritage protection.
02:48Following the earthquakes that struck on South American nation on June 24, UNESCO's Regional
02:53Office established a technical cooperation roadmap to address strategic areas jointly based
02:59on the principles of broad respect for national sovereignty and Venezuelan legislation.
03:04Key elements include an emergency plan to ensure educational continuity and the reconstruction
03:09of schools.
03:10On Monday, Lemestre arrived in Venezuela to meet with national government authorities.
03:15The private sector and civil society representatives to carry out an extensive work agenda.
03:27El Ávila temporary camp located at the Hotel Ávila in the San Bernardino Parish is currently
03:32housed in 64 families affected by the June 24 earthquakes.
03:3661 of these families are from La Guayre State and 3 are from Caracas.
03:39The hotel has been converted into a temporary camp that offers accommodations, food,
03:45medical care and psychological support to earthquake-affected individuals.
03:49As part of the Venezuela Rises plan, the Bolivarian government is preparing additional spaces to
03:54provide comprehensive assistance to affected families while conducting assessments of damaged homes.
04:06In memory of the victims of the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, fishermen from
04:11La Sorra Port in La Guayre held a special mass for the Feast of the Virgin of Carmen.
04:16The commemoration took on a solemn tone of mourning as the earthquake severely affected the area by displacing
04:22sediments and blocking maritime access, which brought fishing activities to a halt.
04:27Despite the damage, the clean-up efforts are underway and fishing operations are expected to resume on Monday.
04:34The fishing community remains steadfast in its faith and commitment to the sea
04:38while honoring those who lost their lives and hoping to restore their livelihoods.
04:52In an interview with Spanish journalist Javier Negri, Venezuela's acting president,
04:56Elsie Rodriguez pointed to the country's historical process of self-determination.
05:01Rodriguez emphasized that national sovereignty and territorial integrity remain fundamental principles
05:06that define the nation's political identity.
05:08ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- Our history tells the story of the struggle for independence,
05:13more than two centuries of independence and sovereignty. The Venezuelan people are deeply attached to their
05:20history, because, for every square meter of our territory you visit, there is a story to tell about our
05:26battles for independence, about the campaigns to achieve independence. And the Venezuelan people will always
05:35defend their independence, their territorial integrity, and Venezuela as a whole, because it's not just about a territory,
05:43it's about the identity and history of a country.
05:46ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- The acting president also outlined the model where economic growth is
05:49directly tied to social investment, arguing that indicators must translate into reduced inequality
05:54and better wages for the working class.
05:56ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- It's a necessary investment, because workers' rights should be our guiding
06:03principle. And from there, we'll begin to restore Venezuela's welfare state, ensuring that these
06:12investments reach everyone, men and women alike. They must reach all social strata. Economic growth is
06:21useless if it leads to inequality and poverty. That economic growth has to reach everyone, not just
06:27the elite at the top. It has to trickle down to the grassroots. And those grassroots should be workers
06:33who feel truly happy and satisfied with the fruits their own country is yielding.
06:38ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- The acting head of state outlined the scope of the national amnesty
06:42process, representing it as an essential step toward political coexistence and as a means of ensuring a
06:48long-term framework for social peace, with nearly 9,000 people benefiting from it.
06:53ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- Here, in less than two months,
06:56we were able to achieve these extraordinary results. What do these numbers show? What do they tell us?
07:03They speak to the country's strong will to take a different path, to bring about the changes Venezuela
07:10needs, changes in the criminal justice system. But not only for those who were involved in political
07:17violence or who, as members of political sectors, were victims of state abuses and its judicial processes,
07:26but also for the citizens, men and women, who are deprived of their liberty and whom I have described
07:32as being subject to the criminalization of poverty. All these aspects are currently being addressed in
07:39a national consultation on criminal justice reform.
07:42ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- Cuba warns that the United States is promoting far-right alliances to
07:47create protests to justify new global aggressions. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that
07:51Washington is seeking to create a far-right coalition to attack a supposed radical left around the world.
07:57Díaz-Canel noted that a new and more dangerous version of Mark McCarty-ism reminiscent of Hitlerian fascism
08:05of the sinister Operation Condor is making a comeback, referring to a ministerial summit in Washington to
08:12combat those they consider left-wing extremists. The Cuban leader also emphasized that the true
08:17danger to humanity is the philosophy of exploitation that guides the warfare of the transnational far-right.
08:31ELIZABETH DE LA GUAYREZ- And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember
08:34you can join us on TikTok at TELESTUDE English. There you will find news in different formats,
08:39news updates, and much more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
09:02Welcome back to From the South. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck off the coast of southern Mexico.
09:08The strong tremor was felt across several Mexican states and multiple countries in Central America,
09:14triggering immediate emergency protocols. The seismic event occurred in a highly active zone of
09:19the Mexican Pacific, with its epicenter located southwest of Hidalgo in the state of Chiapas,
09:26right along the border with Guatemala. While panic spread in several cities, local authorities
09:31confirmed that damage assessments are currently underway to verify the full impact on local infrastructure
09:36and ensure public safety.
09:46A catastrophic storm of torrential rain, high winds, and coastal storm surges has slammed the region
09:53across Chile, leaving three people dead. The severe weather system is the most expensive
09:58the country has faced in two decades and unleashed devastating coastal surges in the Bovo region.
10:04Powerful waves swept directly into shoreline neighborhoods, forcing emergency evacuations as
10:11families scrambled to flee. Ferocious winds topping 100 kilometers per hour toppled power grids, leaving
10:18more than a half a half million citizens in complete darkness. High-voltage lines snapped across major cities, causing widespread
10:25blackouts and dropping residents.
10:28In response, the administration of President José Antonio Cas has suspended places across nine regions
10:34and deployed rescue teams to handle the ongoing national emergency.
10:41I want to reiterate a very clear call to everyone in the regions affected by this weather system.
10:51Today, one of the main tools we have to deal with this emergency is self-care
10:57and following the instructions provided by the authorities.
11:03I want to emphasize that preventative evacuations are not ordered arbitrarily.
11:10They are based on ongoing, specialized technical assessments
11:16that identify areas where people are at risk.
11:21A massive landslide has struck southwest China's Chongqing municipality, burying several residential buildings
11:27and leaving an unknown number of people trapped.
11:30The disaster occurred on Friday morning in mountainous Prenshui country, Wuthering, Huishu and Hubei.
11:37Traumatic footage captured by a steep slope collapsing directly onto a cluster of residential structure,
11:45stensely crushing homes along the Wujian River.
11:49Search and rescue operations are underway and emergency teams have successfully pulled at least nine survivors
11:54from the heavy debris, but crews are still clawing throughout the wreckage for others feared missing.
12:00Regional disaster management teams are deploying additional heavy machinery
12:04as rescue operations continue around the clock in the difficult terrain.
12:31As you can see, Iran's Revolutionary War announced an attack on U.S. base in Syria and issues
12:35warning about control of the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement, the Revolutionary War reported that
12:41the attack was carried out by its airspace force and dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who fell in
12:46Bampur.
12:47According to a report, the offensive destroyed the raider system in several helicopters intended for
12:52special operations, also causing a high number of casualties among U.S. forces.
12:58Furthermore, the military reaffirmed that it maintains full control of the Strait of Hormuz,
13:03warning that its fighters are closely monitoring the area.
13:14Israel's government coalition approved the dissolution of parliament paving the way for
13:18national elections scheduled for October 27. The measure was adopted following unanimous support
13:24for a bill on the financing of political parties. Following the decision, the Knesset has gone into
13:29recess and will not resume its plenary sessions until the new parliament is sworn in. However,
13:35communities may meet on their specialist arrangement and the plenary may be convened
13:39at the request of the government or a group of at least 25 lawmakers.
13:53Ethiopia threatens technological cooperation with China through a strategic alliance between their
13:58telecommunications company to boost the country's digital economy. The Ethiopian stand-owned telecommunications
14:05company and the Chinese company reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a comprehensive partnership
14:10in advanced technologies and state-of-the-art infrastructure. This will be achieved by combining
14:17cutting-edge its capabilities with a robust physical infrastructure to create a resilient digital ecosystem.
14:23The alliance seeks to explore opportunities to jointly develop digital applications tailored to the
14:30local context and sector-specific solution for the country's market.
14:43And we're going now with our special segment on the occasion of the FIFA World Cup 2026,
14:47Beyond the Game, the ball stays pure. Go ahead, Luis. A pleasure to share the set with you once again.
14:53Greetings once more, Laura. Greetings once more to our audience as well. We continue to cover the news
14:57happening in around the World Cup as we're heading for the final weekend, the third place playoff on
15:03Saturday and the grand final on Sunday. More after the break.
15:27Welcome to Beyond the Game, the ball's dispute. The stage is set for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as
15:32Spain and Argentina
15:33prepare to meet in a dream matchup that many believe was destined to happen.
15:39The finalissima that never took place in March will instead be replaced by the biggest prize in football.
15:44Spain, the reigning European champions, and Argentina, the Copa America holders, will battle for the most
15:49coveted trophy in the sport in what promises to be a historic showdown. Ahead of this blockbuster final,
15:55it's impossible not to look back at the history between these two football giants.
15:59Led by Lionel Scaloni and Luis de la Fuente, Argentina and Spain have developed an intermittent
16:04rivalry filled with memorable encounters spanning more than seven decades. Their story began on
16:10December 7, 1952 in Madrid when Argentina defeated Spain 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ricardo Infante,
16:17one of the country's most talented forwards of that era. The next landmark meeting came at the 1966
16:22FIFA World Cup in England. Played in Birmingham, Argentina earned the memorable 2-1 victory over Spain in
16:28one of the most significant competitive matches between the two nations. Four decades later,
16:33in 2006, Lionel Messi made his first appearance against Spain in an international friendly.
16:38La Rocha claimed a 2-1 victory with goals from Xavi Hernandez and David Villa,
16:42while Daniel Vilo scored Argentina's long goal. In 2010, just months after Spain lifted the World Cup in
16:49South Africa, the teams met again in Buenos Aires. Argentina produced a stunning performance,
16:54defeating the newly crowned world champions 4-1 with goals from Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain,
17:00Carlos Tevez and Sergio Agüero. The most recent meeting came in 2018, when Spain handed Argentina
17:06a crushing 6-1 defeat at Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium in a World Cup warm-up friendly.
17:11Isco starred with a hat-trick in one of the heaviest losses Argentina has suffered in recent history.
17:15Now, another chapter is about to be written. With the World Cup trophy on the line,
17:19Spain and Argentina renewed their rivalry on football's biggest stage, where only one nation
17:24will be crowned world champion. Let's now see how Spain reached the final, its second ever.
17:32Spain announced themselves as one of the tournament favorites by dominating Group H. La Rocha
17:37overwhelmed Saudi Arabia in a commanding opening victory before proving their resilience in a
17:42hard-fought draw with Cape Verde. They closed the group stage with another emphatic performance against
17:47Uruguay to finish first, showcasing the position-based football and defensive discipline that have
17:53become trademarks under Luis de la Fuente. Spain has steadily raised its level with every knockout
17:59match. Austria offered little resistance in a comfortable 3-0 round of 32 victory before Portugal
18:05pushed La Roja to their limit in a 10-Siberian derby that Spain edged 1-0. The biggest test came
18:11in
18:11the quarter-finals, where Spain overcame Belgium 2-1 in a high-quality contest to book another
18:17World Cup semi-final, extending an impressive run that has seen them concede just once in the knockout
18:22rounds. Spain defeated France 2-0 in a composed and commanding semi-final match. After an evenly
18:29contested opening, Lamin-Yamal drew the fall that led to a penalty in the 20th minute, and Miquel Oyarzabal
18:35calmly converted from the spot. La Roja took control from there, dominating possession and frustrating a
18:41French side that struggled to create clear chances. Pedro Porro sealed the victory in the 58th minute,
18:47with a clinical finish following a sleek combination with Dani Olmo. Spain's disciplined defense and
18:53patient build-up secured a deserved place in the final. Argentina's journey to the last four has been
19:01built on resilience, overcoming one tough test after another to keep its World Cup dream alive.
19:08The defending champions, Argentina, navigated Group J with experience and attacking quality,
19:14finishing atop the standings after victories over Jordan and Austria before sealing first
19:18place against Algeria. Lionel Messi once again set the tone, while Lionel Scaloni's squad showed the
19:24composure and efficiency expected from the reigning world champions as they advanced to the knockout stage
19:29unbeaten. Argentina's route to the last four has been anything but straightforward. A thrilling 3-1
19:36victory over Cape Verde in the round of 32 was followed by another dramatic 3-2 win against Egypt
19:42in the round of 16. The quarterfinal brought perhaps their toughest challenge yet, but the LB Celeste
19:48defeated Switzerland 3-1 to secure a return to the semifinals. Tested repeatedly under pressure,
19:54Argentina has relied on championship experience and the enduring brilliance of Messi to keep its title
19:59defense alive. Following a tense and scoreless first half, Anthony Gordon fired England ahead in the
20:0555th minute with a powerful finish, but the defending champions responded with relentless pressure.
20:11Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute with a stunning long-range strike, while Lautaro
20:16Martinez sealed the win with the stoppage time header. Argentina dominated the match statistically and on the
20:22pitch in the second half. Outshoot in England 15-5.
20:28And as the countdown to the World Cup final continues, excitement is building in Madrid where fans are
20:33dreaming of a Spanish triumph, but now they must first overcome defending champions Argentina.
20:42I really enjoyed the last one. It was a great match. How do I picture it? With a lot of
20:47tension,
20:47there's going to be a lot of tension between the two teams because they fear each other.
20:54Spain plays very well. You have to admit it, they have a great team and they're strong mentally,
20:58but Argentina is Argentina always. I don't know. There might be the same surprise there was with
21:06France. We completely shut down the French team. But with Argentina, I don't know what's going to
21:11happen. I fear the worst. I fear an Argentina win. The Copa America champion and the Euro champion for the
21:20first time, the best players on the planet on the same field, and hopefully it stays home and Spain lifts
21:27the cup.
21:30And for the first time in FIFA World Cup history, FIFA will award personalized championship wins
21:35to the team crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a historic first for the tournament,
21:41football's governing body will present commemorative wins to the nation that wins the final between Spain
21:47and Argentina, adding them to the World Cup trophy and a traditional gold medal. The university brings
21:53one of the most iconic traditions in US sports into international football. A total of 2026 individually
22:00numbered rings will be produced to commemorate the 2026 tournament. 30 rings will be presented to the
22:06winning team, while the remaining 1,996 will be sold as official 2026 World Cup merchandise. Each ring
22:13will feature the FIFA World Cup trophy on one side, with the opposite side customized to reflect the
22:19identity of the tournament champions.
22:29And two days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, an unexpected opponent has emerged off the pitch.
22:35Thick smoke drifting south from Canada's massive wildfires has blanketed parts of New York and New
22:40Jersey, leaving the stadium area under hazy skies and raising concerns about air quality. Spain train
22:47outdoors despite conditions that range from unhealthy to hazardous, while health experts want that prolonged
22:53exposure to wildfire smoke can affect breathing and athletic performance. Tournament organizers and local
22:59officials continue to monitor the situation closely, with forecasts suggesting cleaner air could arrive
23:04before Sunday's showdown between Spain and Argentina. For now, organizers expect the final to go ahead
23:10as schedule, but the weather has become an important storyline in the build-up to football's biggest match.
23:23In other news, the build-up to the World Cup final is inspiring more than just football fans.
23:28In Jojkova, Kosovo, artist Alken Pasogu created a unique tribute to Lionel Messi and Lamine Jamal. The artwork
23:35is a 150-kilogram mosaic made entirely of greens and seeds, featuring the faces of the two stars
23:42set to lead Argentina and Spain to the final. Posegu says the piece is inspired by an iconic photograph
23:47of Messi and Jamal and represents the story that connects the two players. His goal is to express
23:53emotion through ephemeral art. Created thousands of kilometers from the World Cup, the mosaic has become a
23:59symbol of the final itself, a celebration of two generations of football greatness ready to meet
24:04on the sport's biggest stage.
24:15And well, it's all for this edition of Beyond the Game. The Ball State Spear is going to be back
24:19with
24:19more information on the story shaping of this World Cup in upcoming segments. We'll go back to you, Lore.
