00:14Hi, I'm Lisa from Vanakava, this is Sophie, and this is our studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
00:20Welcome to the world of Vanakava.
00:30We've had our company for about four years now. We were just nominated for the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund, which
00:38is really, really exciting.
00:45It means also, though, that our show will be a little bit more visible than it has been in the
00:50past. That ups the pressure a little bit.
00:58Our sketch is from Spring 08, which is the season that we're currently working on right now.
01:03It's kind of like minimal 1970s jewelry.
01:07There's a lot of that 70s kind of minimalist stuff also in graphic design that inspire the shapes of the
01:13appliques and a lot of the shapes, the stylines on the dresses, and then also the hardware.
01:18We use that in combination with 1930s flowing silhouettes.
01:24One of the main things that's signature to Vanakava is that we design all of our prints by hand ourselves,
01:31and we don't know Photoshop, so we basically do them at Kinko's, cutting and pasting and redrawing.
01:38These three bolts are from Spring.
01:41These are all old beer cans in black and white.
01:45It's on a silk georgette, so we thought it would be really amazing to have, like, a gorgeous, diaphanous, 30s
01:51kind of looking gown that actually, when you looked at clothes, had beer cans on it.
01:55For this collection, we were inspired by Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon.
02:00He wrote sort of the first Hollywood tabloid, really juicy gossip books.
02:05Using a lot of really intense orange and a chartreuse, like the idea of a colorist photograph, that kind of
02:12off-color, really influenced our palette.
02:15I like this picture of beautiful Elizabeth Taylor in her later years.
02:19So these are sketches from Spring.
02:23We tend to get together and figure out our inspiration, or a few inspirations, and then draw separately, have a
02:30meeting, edit, and then start drawing from each other's drawings.
02:35We'll usually have disagreements about details in the drawings, and then that just keeps happening back and forth, back and
02:41forth, until this end piece that is neither Lisa or me.
02:45I always like everything, like, dark and boring, like, you know, like, very, like, dark and, like, kind of, like,
02:52gothic, and Lisa always likes things, like, bright, and a little more shocking.
02:56It was, like, making up stuff on them, yeah.
02:57Lisa's always, like, more and more, and I'm always, like, less, less.
03:01We're doing a presentation, also, and not a runway show, which has become something that's signature for us, and something,
03:09I think, that works really well with the kind of clothes that we make,
03:13because they're, they're so detail-oriented, like, they kind of get lost on a runway.
03:18We can't say too much, but we were looking at eight and a half, um, a lot, and the sets,
03:24and that.
03:24But it's inspired, also, by the, the Hollywood Babylon book, and the idea of, like, kind of, behind-the-scenes
03:30backlog.
03:31So, thanks so much for coming.
03:34We have, like, last-minute five locations to scout, so.
03:38In the next, like, hour.
03:40We'll see you guys later.
03:41Bye!
03:48We'll see you guys later.
03:59We'll see you guys later.
04:00We'll see you guys later.
