When it comes to an award as prestigious as the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, the term "It's an honor to be nominated" is far from a trope. This one of the most prestigious recognitions a designer can receive. Yet, for the duo of Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne — better know as Public School — who've already added two CFDAs to their résumé, they won't admit that they've "made it." And, don't expect much to change after tonight's ceremony, in which they're nominated for another two.

The native New Yorkers' success has been meteoric. As menswear designers, they entered the CFDA Fashion Incubator in 2010 and won two awards in 2013 (CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the Swarovski Menswear of the Year). Then, the pair launched their women's collection in 2014 and just this spring, were named the successors and new creative directors of DKNY.

While their time in the industry may be short, their success is not just a flash in the pan. At least, that's the goal. "We don't think like we've made anything yet," says Osborne. In other words, even if these two do sweep the Awards tonight and take home the CFDA for Menswear Designer of the Year and Swarovski Award for Womenswear, we ain't seen nothin' yet.

00:01We're not saying that we feel like our city is better than any other city, but that's how we feel.
00:07We're both born and raised here in New York.
00:09I think the love affair for us is this is our home, this is our city, and we take so
00:13much pride in that.
00:15There's an opportunity in every single corner to be great or to do something that you want to do.
00:20If you have determination and the hustle and the street smarts, you can figure it out.
00:27You know, when we started this company, it was just Dow and I not knowing much.
00:30We were in a dusty warehouse in Queens, packing clothes up and having t-shirts around our face because it
00:37was really nasty.
00:38And then learning how to pick and pack and ship and invoice. We learned everything on the back end really
00:43fast.
00:43There was no strategy, there was no plan. We kept pushing forward and I think that that's been the spirit
00:48of where we are now.
00:50I think we're in this box that nobody really knows where to put us in.
00:55That's new to people, right? So people can either call us streetwear, some people call us high fashion, but we
00:59take street influence.
01:01But it really isn't any of those things. I think it's really just our upbringing and the fact that everything
01:06is just intertwined.
01:08I think that the hard part isn't necessarily getting there, the hard part is probably staying there.
01:13The end goal is to build this long, sort of lasting career that you can look back on.
01:19But while you're in it, you can't say that you made it because you haven't really made it.
01:23We don't feel like we've made anything yet. I think we still are learning how to have that viable business
01:28and, you know, build a foundation that we could actually stand on and build from.
01:31Because everything moves so fast here. In fashion, it could be in one day and out the next.
01:36So I think we just want to make sure that we're here for a very long time.
