00:00Hi YouTube, I'm Asia and welcome to the five things you need to know.
00:04Yo curls is poppin' girl.
00:06Google tab.
00:07Slide in my DMs.
00:10I'm using all of that, I swear.
00:12Now I must let you know before we begin that this is based on my own personal account of transitioning
00:17my hair.
00:17Cause let's face it, it's different for everyone.
00:20But let's get started.
00:21The first thing you need to know about transitioning your hair from relaxed to natural is that this is just
00:26the first step.
00:27And I know, because I've been there.
00:30I had relaxed hair most of my life, but because I was so attached to my hair, making the decision
00:34to go natural was a little bit difficult.
00:37The time that I decided to transition, I had already been through shock, denial, pain, and guilt.
00:43But my hair was falling out so rapidly.
00:45And when that happens to you, you have to make a change.
00:48The second thing you need to know about transitioning your hair is that there are typically two ways to go
00:52about it.
00:52Either one big chop, or you allow the relaxed hair to go to the ends and then you cut off
00:58the damage.
00:59Now never, ever, ever feel pressure to just do one big chop.
01:04Unless of course you have no other choice, or you've always wanted to see yourself with a short haircut.
01:10I grew out my hair for a good long 19 years, but moving from the humidity of Florida to the
01:17frigid cold of New York showed me no mercy.
01:21I had to get the big chop.
01:23Number three.
01:24There's a lot of products out there for you.
01:26It just depends on your hair type.
01:28There's high porosity and low porosity products.
01:31There's shampoos, conditioners, curling creams, protein treatments, oil treatments.
01:36I think the chop is the easy part.
01:38Finding the right product is what takes you some time.
01:41Take it from someone who has taken five years to find the right product for their hair.
01:46The fourth thing you need to know about transitioning your hair is that there are a ton of different styles
01:50out there for you to try.
01:51Anybody can go on YouTube and look up a tutorial.
01:53I mean just check out our channel.
01:55But if you're anything like me, you're no good at hair.
01:58So to achieve a different curl pattern than my natural one, I do a two strand twist, use a little
02:04bit of curling cream.
02:05I wrap it up and pin it to my head.
02:07I only do it for the twist out.
02:09Now a lot of people can rock knots like Bantu, but I am not one of those people.
02:13You can also use cold wave rods, also known as perm rods or any type of curlers and just sit
02:19under a dryer to speed up the process.
02:21The fifth and final thing you need to know is that you need to rock that .
02:26Don't fret, this will not happen overnight.
02:28It takes a lot of hard work, care, maintenance, but there are a lot of silk bonnets, scarves, other contraptions
02:35to keep your hair laid.
02:37Now, take your pics, put it to your heart, for we are the United Sisters in shrinkage, and we will
02:43not be ashamed by our kinks and curls.
02:46Of course, no shade to my relaxes is out there, but if you ever do decide to transition, I hope
02:51this guides you well.
02:52That's been the five things you need to know about transitioning your hair.
02:55I'll see you guys next time.
