00:00Hey, you guys are here early.
00:02Before you come in, subscribe to Refinery29.
00:06You clicked below?
00:08All right, come on in.
00:12Hey guys, what's up?
00:14My name's Julia.
00:15I'm a filmmaker here in Brooklyn, New York.
00:17I'm normally on the other side of the camera,
00:19so this is weird, but welcome to my house.
00:21I live on the border of Bushwick and Ridgewood.
00:24It's about 45 minutes outside of the city.
00:26I love my neighborhood.
00:28It's filled with a lot of awesome neighbors
00:30who've lived on the block for over 40, 50 years.
00:33There's a lot of life here, and it's really great.
00:36I live in a four-bedroom apartment.
00:37It actually used to be two separate units
00:40that were combined into one, so we have so much space.
00:43My rent for the entire apartment is $4,000.
00:45I pay $1,000 for my room each month.
00:48I feel like that's a pretty inexpensive price overall.
00:52We kind of did the compromise of living farther from the city
00:55so we could get more space at a more inexpensive price.
01:07So this is our living room.
01:09I would say that all of the furniture is really eclectic.
01:12We thrifted almost all of it.
01:14The architecture of the building is pre-war mixed with new appliances,
01:17so I think that we try to mirror that in our home style.
01:21I live with a bunch of artists, and we keep it colorful.
01:23My most exciting home find was actually my living room table.
01:27I found it in Baltimore when I was in art school for $85,
01:31and I had absolutely no money then, but I just couldn't pass it up,
01:36so I ate ramen for a week so I could get it,
01:39and I've lived with it in five different apartments.
01:41When I was in art school in Baltimore, I was studying painting,
01:44and then halfway through I realized that I wanted my paintings to move,
01:48so I switched to video and completely changed industries,
01:52and I really missed that part about my life so much.
01:55I don't really paint anymore, so it's really nice living with three other painters
01:59and just being able to tap into that past life via them.
02:03This mermaid is one of my favorite pieces in this room.
02:06I think it's because my mom loves mermaids, and it makes me think of her.
02:12Let's go over to one out of two kitchens.
02:16I love this space.
02:18I'm a huge foodie, and having the counter space to cook is awesome.
02:22For Memorial Day, we had our first barbecue in the apartment,
02:26and it was so much fun.
02:27I love how food brings me and my friends all together.
02:30This is my first New York apartment with a dishwasher.
02:34Oh my god, it is such a game changer.
02:37The thing that makes me feel the most adult is my kitchenware,
02:40especially the pots and pans.
02:42I'm Italian, so pasta sundae was something that I grew up with,
02:45and this pot is actually awesome,
02:47because I don't even have to take the lid off to strain the water.
02:50Highly recommend.
02:52It's a part of this ceramic coated set that I got from Target.
02:55I love entertaining guests, and I love cooking,
02:57so it feels really nice just to have a full set.
03:00I can just like look super professional,
03:02and I feel like I have a real home now.
03:04My roommate actually found the apartment.
03:06I was out of town the entire month, and she sent me pictures and said,
03:09I'm signing the lease with or without you.
03:12Do you like this apartment? I need to know today.
03:14And just based off of the pictures alone,
03:16I knew that it was such a unique space that I agreed to it,
03:19and I'm so glad that we did.
03:24This is my bathroom.
03:25As you can see, it's a little bit small, but it does the job.
03:28I love the tile walls.
03:30One of my biggest pet peeves is when my roommate leaves the shower curtain open after she showers.
03:36It just looks so much tidier when the shower curtain is closed.
03:39I also really love these towels because they have this loop,
03:43so I can hook them up on the wall, and it just keeps everything organized.
03:48In a shared space, it's all about organization.
03:53This is my washer dryer.
03:55We actually have two of them, one on each floor.
03:58It changed my life.
04:02This is our second kitchen.
04:04It's not fully functional because we don't have an oven.
04:07It's more just our party studio kitchen,
04:10but we do have a second fridge, which is super clutch.
04:14This is my computer desk.
04:17The computer was definitely a huge splurge,
04:19but I really needed a good editing workstation,
04:23and I like the way it's set up, so it motivates me to sit here and be here.
04:27Organization is really important to me, so I have all my wires right here.
04:31I have this clear container that I keep all my hard drives in.
04:35I actually named each hard drive after a Greek god or goddess, so that's kind of funny.
04:41This is all my roommate's studio space.
04:44Like I said, I don't paint anymore, which is kind of sad,
04:46but it's nice being around their paintings.
04:48It brings so much life into the apartment.
04:54All right, come on into my bedroom.
04:56My style is all about just finding things and trying to make it work.
05:00I get a lot of things from friends, like this plant was from my friend Greg.
05:05I love how much space I have, but it was really awkward trying to configure everything,
05:10so I had to turn my bed sideways, but it's actually awesome for watching TV and stuff,
05:16especially if like I have a friend over or something.
05:19This is my reading nook.
05:21I collect vintage magazines, and it's just really fun to come through and like look at them.
05:26Sitting in this spot makes me feel like I'm not even in New York, which is kind of cool.
05:31Maybe it's also because I'm so far from the city.
05:33My most sentimental piece in my apartment is probably the picture of my grandparents.
05:39They're sitting outside of their first apartment,
05:42and they just look really, really cute, and they're young, and I love it.
05:46So this is my closet.
05:48The ironic thing about all this color is that I usually have to wear black for my job,
05:53but I love wearing colorful clothes in my free time.
05:57I collect a bunch of accessories, especially scarves,
06:00so this mesh organizer is really perfect so I can kind of see what's there.
06:06I also love this organizer.
06:08It's perfect.
06:09It's so versatile.
06:11Plus, I get to put all my cool tchotchkes and stuff on it.
06:14It fits perfectly within my small space.
06:17And then the last thing, and also one of my favorite things about my room,
06:22is these smart lights, and I can just like control the lighting from my phone.
06:27Savannah Sunset.
06:29This one's my favorite.
06:35Oh, you guys found me.
06:38This is our backyard.
06:40My favorite part about the apartment is definitely the backyard.
06:43I have direct access through my bedroom.
06:45During this summer, it's just so nice to go out there and garden.
06:48I love coming out here.
06:50I have basil, mint, rosemary, chives.
06:54I cook with it all the time.
06:56I would say that an aspect of my life that is really reflected in my home
06:59is that I'm an artist at heart, and I just love looking at cool things.
07:03My roommates and I are really cognizant of the energy within our apartment,
07:07so every couple months, we try to arrange the furniture just to keep it fresh.
07:12That's a wrap on My Sweet Digs.
