00:00Growing up in my household, my mom refused to allow any of my siblings as well as myself
00:06to process my hair, so I was natural.
00:10At the end of last year, I made a dream board, and one of the things on the board was
00:14I start
00:14my lock journey for my birthday.
00:17This is one of those things that I've really wanted for quite some time now.
00:25My name is Kamalia, I am from Brooklyn, and today I will begin starter locks.
00:29Locks, in general, they're a beautiful thing.
00:31I've always admired the look.
00:33My junior year, I permed my hair, which was a very awful decision because my mom refused
00:40to allow me to get locks.
00:42I decided that once I left high school that I'll lock my hair.
00:46In 2007, once I graduated high school, I had locks.
00:50Up until 2019, I chopped them off.
00:56As a result of being hospitalized in 2018 due to some head trauma that I had, that resulted
01:05in half of my hair being chopped off.
01:07So as opposed to rocking it with half hair, I just decided to chop it all off.
01:12It's about three years into the big shop.
01:16I am excited.
01:17So now I'm here today, starting the journey again.
01:21Hey Kamal, how are you doing today?
01:23Hello, how are you?
01:24How are you?
01:24All right, just take a seat right here.
01:26We can get on the road.
01:28I'm Nia the Lockout, owner and founder of the Lockout Corporation and the Lockout Salon.
01:34I'm mostly known for being Derrick Rose's official hairstylist.
01:38I'm also the official hairstylist of Miguel Castro.
01:41I'm also Sylvan Landisberg.
01:44All right, what are we doing for you today?
01:46We are doing starter locks.
01:49I started doing hair at my aunt's salon for a little bit of extra cash when I was 17 years
01:54old.
01:55And then I put it on social media and it became something bigger.
01:58The products that I use, of course, are on my own.
02:02I started my locks when I was 10 years old.
02:05I'm now 21, so I've had my locks for 11 years.
02:08I've cut them, dyed them, all kinds of things, but here I am now.
02:12Don't be timid, girl. Get in there.
02:14I am. Don't worry. Don't worry. Don't worry.
02:16My favorite thing about doing hair is putting smiles on people's faces.
02:21We are going to first wash her hair with the Lock-Odd conditioner and shampoo together.
02:27Your hair feels nice.
02:30Shampoo first, of course.
02:31After that, we're going to dry it off.
02:34Then we're going to bring her to the chair.
02:36We're going to look at the hair.
02:37We're going to spray it down with our mist just to make it more moisturized and give it a little
02:41bit more slip.
02:43Even though we offer a few different ways to start locks, today we're going to be doing comb coils.
02:50We're going to use a comb and part it out into triangle parts.
02:55And row by row, we're going to do that.
03:03This process today should take around 3 hours.
03:13Make sure she goes in the dryer. She's going to sit in the dryer for about 20 minutes.
03:20Do you want to style?
03:21I do.
03:22What did you want?
03:23Something up until this side.
03:26After she dries, style it.
03:28Twist it down.
03:34Add jewelry.
03:37All done.
03:39Okay, I just finished the style.
03:41Add in the jewels.
03:42How do you like it?
03:46I love it.
03:47I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it. I love
03:52it.
03:58Too good.
04:00Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
04:03Kamalia's hair came out fantastic. The parts are dope. The style looks amazing. The jewels. Everything. It's just absolute excellence.
04:11Perfection. The locks are going to be beautiful.
04:15In about two weeks, you want to take the style out. Make sure you're wrapping your head every single night.
04:20Use the product.
04:21Okay. And come back in four to six weeks for your next retwist.
04:25I'm ecstatic to, you know, re-journey, you know, this lock thing. So that's just really it.
