01:11This bungalow belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell
01:13Who built it a few years ago
01:15When they were building it
01:16They found that it sat on top of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery
01:18And I helped with the excavation
01:21Now they want to build a garage
01:22Next to the bungalow
01:24So this is why I'm back
01:35Just taking off the top
01:38There's no chance of seeing any burials at this level
01:41Because it's all disturbed
01:43It's really only when we get down to the surface of the chalk
01:46And we can clean it up
01:47But we'll get an idea of whether there are any burials here or not
01:52La historia comenzó en 1992
01:54Cuando Jill y Brian Bushnell
02:20I wasn't actually here
02:22When that actually came out of the ground
02:24But I'd been out
02:25And when they came back
02:26They said, look what we've found
02:28And we realised that it was something of a significance
02:31So the work that day had to stop
02:34Yeah
02:38It's amazing, isn't it?
02:40Yeah
02:40You don't get any idea from that photograph
02:43No
02:43Just how big it is
02:44No, no
02:45It's hard to imagine, isn't it?
02:46That underneath all of this crusty surface
02:49There was once a beautiful shiny iron blade
02:52Yes, it is
02:53No doubt the person who had it
02:55Was terribly proud of
03:03Se encuentran armas
03:04Y había muchas tumbas debajo de la casa
03:06Oh, no
03:07No
03:09No, indeed not
03:10How many were there all together?
03:11Well, there were 23 in total, Jillian
03:14There's a diagram of the ones that were found
03:16So there were 23 actually underneath the bungalow
03:19Yes
03:20And I mean, are some of them still here?
03:22Oh, yes, yes
03:24They only excavated the ones that would be in the way of the main footings
03:28So which room are we in now, Jill?
03:31We're in the dining room at the moment
03:32So we've got one on the corner of the dining room
03:35So there's one over there
03:36Possibly, yes
03:37And one between the dining room and the sitting room
03:51It doesn't worry me at all
03:52It did initially
03:54When I realized the significance
03:57I got a bit panic-stricken
03:58In fact, I even rang the local vicar and said
04:01You know, I'm rather upset about all this
04:03But he said, well, don't worry about it
04:05Because it is just their remains
04:08And their souls have gone elsewhere
04:35Esperábamos descubrir marcas oscuras
04:37Que indicaran la presencia de alguna tumba
04:41This one here is now really clear
04:44The one that goes just up to the fence
04:50This one comes right from here
04:53Down here
04:55Right up here
04:57And obviously it's been chopped through
04:59By quite a shallow pipe
05:01At some stage
05:03There's the end of another one
05:06Coming round here
05:10Well, we've got the site cleaned up now
05:16And we know how many burials there are under the garage
05:19And I'm just about to break the good news to Mrs Bushnell
05:23Jill, do you want to...?
05:24Yes
05:24Um, we know I was teasing you last night
05:28And saying that there were 13
05:29Yes
05:30Underneath here
05:30Well, there aren't quite that many
05:32But we have got one
05:34Yes
05:35Two
05:36Three
05:38Four
05:39And we think
05:40Five and six
05:41Really?
05:43Yes
05:44Afortunadamente
05:45Solo dos de las tumbas
05:46Debían ser excavadas
05:47Las que habrían sido destruidas
05:49Por las bases del estacionamiento
05:51Pero
05:51A Jill Bushnell
05:52Le importaba si otras tumbas
05:54Eran alteradas
05:54I feel we can't be blasé about it
05:57Because after all
05:58It is
05:59It is somebody
06:00Who is buried here
06:01And I visualise
06:02That they lived probably
06:03Further down the village
06:04And they
06:04Decided that this was a special place
06:07To bury their dead
06:08And so therefore
06:09We have to treat it with respect
06:11Erm
06:11And remember
06:12That it is somebody
06:13Erm
06:14Somebody's father
06:15Somebody's mother
06:16We won't know
06:16Till you
06:17Have a look
06:18Yeah
06:18I quite agree
06:24Después de dos días de excavar
06:26Alan y yo
06:27Habíamos llegado al nivel
06:28En el cual
06:28Debían comenzar a aparecer
06:30Los huesos
06:31Have you seen this, Julian?
06:34No
06:35We're just getting the top of the skull
06:41Top of the skull appearing there
06:44There's the brow ridge there
06:47And I think you can just begin to see
06:48The other brow ridge
06:49So the nose
06:51The nose bone
06:52Is just the point of the brush there
06:57El esqueleto de la tumba
06:58Que yo excavaba
06:59Estaba en muy malas condiciones
07:03It's a shame
07:04We haven't got a complete burial here
07:05Because a service pipe
07:07Running through
07:08Has taken off the legs
07:09About at this point
07:10But what is left
07:11Up at the head end
07:13Is actually
07:13Very informative
07:14And very interesting
07:15I think that
07:16Because of the fact
07:17That the head
07:18Has fallen back
07:19And the jaw has dropped
07:20That this burial
07:21Must have been placed
07:22In some sort of a void
07:23Maybe a coffin
07:24Of some sort
07:25And there are
07:26Indications of other things
07:27As well
07:28There's a dark
07:29Charcoalish stain
07:30Running down the right arm here
07:32Which again
07:32Maybe the remains
07:33Of something
07:34That's decayed
07:35Within that coffin
07:37Alan
07:38Alan estaba progresando
07:39Con su tumba
07:40El esqueleto estaba
07:41Mucho mejor conservado
07:42Que el mío
07:43Y comenzaba a parecer
07:44El de un hombre
07:45Jill Bushnell
07:46Estaba ansiosa
07:47Por saber
07:47Que habíamos encontrado
07:48Did you find any
07:50Grave goods
07:50This time
07:51Julian
07:51Nope
07:52Nope
07:52Nothing with
07:53Either of them
07:54Which is quite
07:55Strange really
07:55But to me
07:57It's interesting
07:58As well
07:58Because it begs
07:59That question
07:59Who was the person
08:01Was it a Saxon
08:02Or was it one
08:03Of the Britons
08:03Who were living here
08:04At the time
08:05That the Saxon invaders
08:06Came in
08:06So I think
08:07That's one of the
08:07Questions that we'll
08:08Want to try and answer
08:09Yes
08:10Find out as much
08:11As we can
08:11About the burial
08:13Al día siguiente
08:14Llegó la especialista
08:15En huesos
08:15Margaret Cox
08:16I want to know
08:18What these are
08:18Because we think
08:19In our ignorance
08:20That that's a male
08:21That Alan's digging
08:22And this is a female
08:24I think you're right
08:25Are we right
08:25I think so
08:27The pelvis
08:28Looks
08:28Although it's very damaged
08:30And incomplete
08:30To be female
08:31Because you've got
08:32Such a wide
08:32Scenetic notch
08:33Which bit's that
08:34That's the two
08:35Sort of right angled
08:36Arches that you can see
08:37And basically
08:38The width of that notch
08:40Determines the width
08:41And the size
08:42Of the pelvic outlet
08:43Which is crucial
08:44To whether or not
08:45You're going to be able
08:45To deliver a child
08:46Through it
08:47Okay so you think
08:47This one's a female
08:48Now what about
08:49This one over here
08:50You've already said
08:51From a distance
08:51That you think
08:52He's a hulking great chap
08:54Yes
08:55It is almost
08:57Certainly a male
08:57The main criteria
08:59Are on the skull
09:01The super orbital ridges
09:02Hang on
09:03Are these the ridges
09:04Over the eyebrows
09:05Right
09:05The eyebrow ridges
09:06Basically
09:07What they are
09:08They reflect the size
09:09Of the sinuses
09:10Underneath them
09:11And males have
09:12Fairly large ones
09:13And women don't
09:14Is that
09:15I mean this sort of
09:16Curving of the spine
09:17That's just
09:17The way it's laid
09:18In the grave
09:18Is it
09:19It might be
09:22But there is a
09:24Pathological condition
09:26Called scoliosis
09:27Of the spine
09:28Which results
09:29In sideways curves
09:30Yeah
09:31Which can result
09:32From an awful lot
09:33Of different things
09:34And without actually
09:35Taking that up
09:36And looking at the bones
09:37Individually
09:38It's impossible to say
09:40Sometimes it is just
09:41The way that they've fallen
09:42In the ground
09:43Yeah
09:43And that's probably the case
09:45But not necessarily
09:46Right
09:47Is there any indication
09:48As to what age
09:49The person is
09:53Now this
09:55Particular bone
09:55Is
09:56The clavicle
09:57Right
09:58The clavicle
09:59Is actually
10:00The latest
10:01In terms of years
10:03Bone in the human body
10:04To actually finish
10:05Its growth
10:05And you can actually
10:07See when it's
10:08Finished that growth
10:09Because a little
10:09Sort of plate of bone
10:11On the end
10:11Fuses to the rest
10:13Of the bone
10:14Now that usually
10:15Happens in the late
10:16Twenties
10:17Now in this individual
10:19We can say
10:20Quite confidently
10:21That that bone
10:22Has fused
10:23So this person
10:24Was over
10:25Sort of 28
10:2530
10:26When they died
10:34Cuando todos
10:35Los huesos
10:35Sean removidos
10:36Margaret
10:37Nos prometió
10:38Examinarlos
10:38En su laboratorio
10:39De la Universidad
10:40De Barmouth
10:41It's actually
10:42Quite nerve-wracking
10:43When you get
10:44To this stage
10:45Of taking
10:46The skeleton apart
10:47Because
10:47Especially in a case
10:48Like this
10:49Where the bones
10:49Are so fragmentary
10:51And it
10:52It's a worry
10:53Because
10:53You don't know
10:54Whether a bone
10:55Is going to crumble
10:56Into a
10:56Thousand pieces
10:57As you lift it
10:58This is why
10:59We've been so careful
11:00Trying to record
11:01As much as we possibly can
11:02While the bones
11:03Are still in the ground
11:04You almost feel like
11:06Apologizing to the person
11:07As you're doing it
11:08But we're being as gentle
11:09As we possibly can
11:13In his report
11:19Marguerette
11:19Estableció
11:20Que no había
11:20Pistas
11:21De la causa
11:21De la muerte
11:25De hecho
11:26Sus articulaciones
11:27Estaban
11:28En muy buenas
11:28Condiciones
11:29Sin indicios
11:30De enfermedades
11:31O artritis
11:33Desafortunadamente
11:34No puede decirse
11:35Lo mismo
11:35Del cráneo
11:36El cual
11:37Había colapsado
11:37Completamente
11:38Y necesitaría
11:39De la cuidadosa
11:40Atención
11:40De un experto
11:42En el estudio
11:43De Richard Neve
11:44En la Universidad
11:45De Manchester
11:45Tenía la esperanza
11:47De que se pudiera
11:47Hacer algo
11:48Con el estropeado
11:49Cráneo
11:49No, no tendríamos
11:50Una cara
11:50Que reconstruir
12:19Si, eso puede ser
12:21De que se pusiera
12:21Y eso definitivamente
12:23Es una tarea
12:24Para Caroline
12:25Ella es muy
12:27Muy habilita
12:27En piecer
12:29Estas cosas
12:29De que se le gusta
12:30Un desafío
12:31Como Caroline
12:35Richard le dio
12:36La tarea
12:36De reconstruir
12:37Nuestro sajón
12:38A Caroline Wilkinson
12:39Quien rápidamente
12:40Notó
12:41Que tenía
12:41Algunas facciones
12:42Bastante interesantes
12:43¿Verdad?
12:43¿Verdad?
12:44¿Verdad?
12:45¿Verdad?
12:45I mean, the two eye sockets
12:46Are different heights
12:48Aren't they?
12:49This one's higher up
12:50Than that one
12:51Yeah
12:51It's got a full
12:54A little tilt
12:55To the face
12:55All over really
12:57And also
12:58In the edges
12:59Of the nose
13:00The nose
13:00Aperture itself
13:02Is actually
13:02Off centre too
13:03Sort of heading off
13:04Isn't it
13:05Towards the right
13:06And that cheekbones
13:07The whole face
13:08Kind of heads
13:08That direction
13:09Yeah
13:09You'll probably see it
13:11A little bit
13:12In the smile
13:13You'd notice it
13:14With the teeth
13:19En el museo
13:20De Salisbury
13:21Me reuní con el experto
13:22En historia sajona
13:23Mark Carney
13:24Quería saber más
13:25Acerca del cementerio
13:26De Winterbourne
13:27Gunner
13:27Y de las personas
13:28Que pudieran estar
13:29Sepultadas allí
13:31That's
13:31Jim and Brian's
13:32Bungalier
13:32There isn't it
13:33Yes
13:33I knew there were
13:34Quite a lot of
13:34Burials underneath that
13:35But I didn't realize
13:36There was quite
13:37Such a big cemetery
13:38Yes
13:39There's something
13:40Like 85 burials
13:41Now known
13:42Which makes it
13:42The second largest
13:43Saxon cemetery
13:44In Wiltshire
13:45And it originates
13:47Over this side
13:47At least in terms
13:48Of its discovery
13:49In the early 1960s
13:51And then subsequent
13:52Discoveries have
13:52Come over in this
13:54Direction
13:54But what's
13:55Particularly interesting
13:56Is the way that
13:56The core of this
13:58Cemetery
13:59Or at least what
13:59We think is the core
14:00Seems to be focusing
14:01On these earlier
14:04Prehistoric burial
14:05Features
14:05The pond barrow
14:06And the bowl barrow
14:07Defined by the ring ditch
14:09Here
14:09And this is something
14:11That you see
14:11Occurring quite commonly
14:12In pagan Saxon
14:14Cemetery
14:14Is this focusing
14:15On to earlier
14:16Monuments in the
14:17Landscape
14:17So I mean that
14:18Pond barrow then
14:19Must lie just in the
14:20Back garden of the
14:21Garden next door
14:22And that is in the
14:24Field just behind
14:25Jill and Brian's
14:26House isn't it
14:27Yes
14:27But how do you know
14:29That the people
14:31Buried in the
14:31Cemetery
14:31Are Saxons
14:32Well we don't
14:34Know for sure
14:34That they're all
14:35Necessarily Saxons
14:36However a number
14:38Of the graves
14:39The ones coloured
14:39Red have produced
14:41Goods with the
14:42Burials
14:42So I mean you
14:44Look at this object
14:44For instance
14:45This iron axe head
14:47This is not an axe
14:49For chopping firewood
14:50This is a weapon
14:52For throwing
14:53And you can see
14:54Here still the
14:55Mineralised wood
14:55Of the haft
14:56This large iron
14:57Rhythm would have
14:58Held the haft in
14:58Place
14:59It's from a type
15:01Of axe called
15:02A Francisca
15:03And it was used
15:04Pretty well
15:05Exclusively by
15:06The Franks who
15:07Settled in modern
15:08Day Belgium and
15:09Northern France
15:10At the very end
15:11Of the Roman
15:12Period
15:12So what's it
15:13Doing here in
15:14Winterbourne Gunner
15:15It's a very
15:16Interesting question
15:16I should think
15:17At this state
15:18We are looking at
15:18A Frank actually
15:19Buried in
15:20Winterbourne Gunner
15:21So what's
15:22Somebody like
15:23That doing
15:24Here at that
15:24Time
15:25Well this
15:26Period the
15:26Middle of the
15:275th century
15:27Is a fascinating
15:28Period you've
15:29Got the collapse
15:29Of the Roman
15:30Rule the
15:31Western Roman
15:31Empire there's
15:32A lot of
15:32Political and
15:33Social turmoil
15:34Going on
15:35It's probably
15:36Fairly insecure
15:38And we know
15:39From sources
15:40Elsewhere in
15:41The Roman
15:42Empire that
15:43Communities were
15:44Employing
15:44Barbarian
15:45Federates or
15:47Mercenaries to
15:47Come in and
15:48Protect their
15:49Estates and
15:49Territories and
15:50And it is
15:51Quite conceivable
15:52That this
15:52Act actually
15:53Represents this
15:54Activity going
15:55On in the
15:56Salisbury area
15:57So what about
15:58The graves that
15:59Haven't got any
16:00Grave goods in
16:01Them then who
16:01Are they
16:01Well this is the
16:02Fascinating aspects
16:03Of cemeteries of
16:05This period because
16:05I think more and
16:06More people have
16:07Started to think
16:08That we are
16:08Probably looking at
16:09Cemeteries that
16:10Include a strong
16:11Local Romano
16:12British population
16:13Along with a few
16:15Graves of the
16:16New force the
16:17Political and
16:18Military force
16:19That are coming
16:19Into the country
16:20In association
16:21With them
16:22So does that
16:23Mean that the
16:24Person we're
16:25Looking at
16:25The man from
16:25Under the
16:26Garage
16:26Who's not
16:26Buried with
16:27Anything
16:27Is he more
16:28Likely to be
16:29A Brit
16:29Then rather
16:30Than a
16:30Saxon
16:31Can't be
16:32Definitive
16:32But I think
16:33It's highly
16:33Likely
16:34We are
16:34Looking
16:36So
16:37So
16:37How can we
16:38See
16:39If our
16:39Man
16:39Was
16:40Sajon
16:40Or
16:40Britannico
16:41Nativo

16:59Of

17:00Different
17:00Bones
17:01They
17:02Are
17:02Very
17:02Different
17:04When
17:05You
17:06Look
17:06At
17:06The
17:07British

17:07And
17:08You
17:08Compare
17:09It
17:09With
17:10The
17:11Saxon
17:11Foot
17:11You
17:12Can
17:12See
17:12That
17:13The
17:14Whole
17:14Structure
17:15Of
17:15The
17:15British

17:17It's

17:24Much
17:24Greater
17:25Strength
17:25Now
17:26With
17:27The
17:27Saxon
17:28Foot
17:29Because
17:29Of
17:30The
17:30Strength
17:31Of
17:32A
17:32Tendon
17:32Which
17:32Runs
17:33Under
17:33Here
17:34There's
17:35Always
17:35A
17:35Very
17:36Very
17:36Steak
17:37Groove
17:38And
17:39Frequently

17:44I

17:44It
17:44Is
17:45In

17:45To
17:45Keep
17:45That

17:51You

17:52Yeah
17:53You
17:54See
17:54That's
17:54Much
17:54Less

17:56In
17:56There
17:57Isn't
17:57There
17:58Look
17:59I'm
17:59Most
17:59Intrigued
18:00I
18:00Want
18:00To

22:50Lo
22:50Cortaban?
23:04I would have thought that was too fragile to actually go into a tree trunk. They have sharp edges.
23:09Oh, there it's starting.
23:15Oh, straight across.
23:19So what I'm waiting for is to see this whole tree trunk just split right across this end.
23:34That was brilliant.
23:52I mean, this seems a remarkably small axe for the job you're doing, is it?
23:56I think it is. From my point of view, my experience in the past has always been very large, quite
24:01large, modern axes, and they tend to slice through very quickly.
24:04Whereas this, this is more like a little hatchet, but this is the sort of thing that the Saxons are
24:09supposed to have used on quite large timbers.
24:12Yeah.
24:12So there's lots of pictures of these sort of things, and they have been found in digs, so I believe.
24:42Now, this house is very spacious.
24:45I mean, there's room in here for an entire family, not only to sleep, but to work and cook and
24:50eat and live together.
24:52Now, if I was a Saxon and I lived in this village, this is the house I'd like to live
24:55in.
25:01In Manchester, Caroline había progresado con el rostro.
25:06We're very nearly at the finished muscle stage all over the face.
25:14And seeing how lopsided he is.
25:18You can see the nose heads off to the right-hand side of the face.
25:22That would be the tip of the nose there.
25:26And the mouth is wider on this side of the face than on this side of the face.
25:32So, slightly off-center.
25:46Brian.
25:47Well, I can't wait. It's nearly Christmas, so this is going to be an early Christmas present.
25:51All right, then. Just for you.
25:52Okay.
25:53Now, he's made of terracotta, so this is why he's got this rather pink and colour.
25:57Yes.
25:58But, there he is.
26:00Gosh.
26:01Am I right?
26:01Oh, he's not a bit like I expected.
26:03Is he?
26:04No.
26:04What did you expect?
26:05I thought he'd be a rugged warrior-type sort of person.
26:09He's not. He's quite a gentle-looking person, isn't he?
26:14Now, there's always been this question about whether he was a Saxon or a Briton.
26:17Yeah.
26:18Now, somebody looked at his foot bones and suggested that he was a Briton, and then we had a radiocarbon
26:25date done.
26:26Oh, do you mean to tell me that he was a Briton after all, not a Saxon?
26:30No.
26:30Oh, well, we'll have to call him Arthur, then, and not Egbert, instead.
26:33You'll have to call him what?
26:35Arthur, not Egbert.
26:37He decided he was going to be called Egbert if he was a Saxon, wasn't he?
26:40Yes.
26:42Now, let's remember that you said that you had quite a strong image of what it would have looked like
26:47at the time that the burial ground was being used.
26:49Oh, absolutely, yes. A little party of very sad people walking up the lane, possibly.
26:54So, is this what you thought?
26:59Yes, absolutely.
27:01Isn't that incredible?
27:02So, these are the individual burials here, and this is the one here that lay underneath the garage.
27:09It's just about to be buried, and as the funeral processions went, it's way up from the village.
27:14And then, obviously, within this same area, you've got the barrows.
27:18There's the pond barrow over here, and the bowl barrow that were found.
27:23Very ancient.
27:24And then there's the village down at the bottom of the valley.
27:27Yes.
27:27Just sort of sitting quite close to the river.
27:29Isn't that brilliant?
27:31That is just what I thought.
27:32Captured that very well.
27:33Very well.
27:55So, who was he?
27:56A Saxon mercenary or a British farmer?
27:59He certainly doesn't seem to have been built for fighting, and nobody gave him any weapons to take to the
28:03next world.
28:05But he and his companions chose their burial place with great care.
28:08They wanted to lie next to those ancient burial mounds, old beyond imagination, that symbolised ancestral claims to the land.
28:16Jill and Brian chose this spot, too.
28:18But little did they realise, as they started to build their house, that they, too, would end up living with
28:22the ancestors.
28:23So, let's see.
