Genesis Chapter 26 records Isaac’s sojourn in Gerar during a famine and the renewal of God’s promise.
There is a famine in the land. Isaac goes to Abimelech king of the Philistines in Gerar. The Lord appears to him and says, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you… I will be with you and will bless you… I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven… and in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” Isaac settles in Gerar and says of Rebekah, “She is my sister.” Abimelech later sees Isaac with Rebekah and confronts him. Isaac prospers greatly; the Philistines envy him and fill the wells that Abraham’s servants had dug. Abimelech asks Isaac to leave. Isaac digs new wells—Esek, Sitnah, and Rehoboth—then goes up to Beersheba. The Lord appears to him again. Isaac builds an altar and calls on the name of the Lord. Abimelech comes with his men and they make a covenant of peace. The chapter ends with Esau taking Hittite wives, which make life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.
