Genesis Chapter 30 records the continuing growth of Jacob’s family and the increase of his flocks.
Rachel sees that she bears Jacob no children and envies her sister. She gives her servant Bilhah to Jacob as a wife; Bilhah bears Dan and Naphtali. Leah then gives her servant Zilpah to Jacob; Zilpah bears Gad and Asher. Leah conceives again and bears Issachar, then Zebulun, and a daughter named Dinah. God remembers Rachel; she conceives and bears a son and calls his name Joseph, saying, “May the Lord add to me another son!” Jacob asks Laban to send him away so he may return to his own country. Laban replies that he has learned by divination that the Lord has blessed him because of Jacob. They agree that Jacob’s wages will be every speckled and spotted sheep and every black lamb, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. Laban removes the marked animals that day and puts a three-day journey between himself and Jacob. Jacob takes fresh rods of poplar, almond, and plane, peels white streaks in them, and sets them in the watering troughs. The flocks breed in front of the rods and bring forth striped, speckled, and spotted young. Jacob’s flocks increase exceedingly; he becomes exceedingly prosperous with large flocks, female and male servants, camels, and donkeys.
