Genesis Chapter 31 records Jacob’s flight from Laban and the covenant they make in the hill country of Gilead.
Jacob hears that Laban’s sons are saying he has taken all that belonged to their father. The Lord says to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.” Jacob calls Rachel and Leah to the field and tells them how Laban has changed his wages ten times, yet God has not allowed him to harm him. Rachel and Leah answer that their father has treated them as foreigners and sold them. Jacob rises, sets his sons and his wives on camels, and flees with all his livestock. Rachel steals her father’s household gods. On the third day Laban is told that Jacob has fled. He pursues him and overtakes him in the hill country of Gilead. God comes to Laban in a dream by night and says, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.” Laban confronts Jacob about the secret departure and the stolen gods. Jacob does not know that Rachel has stolen them. Laban searches the tents but does not find the gods, for Rachel is sitting on them and claims she cannot rise. Jacob becomes angry and recounts his twenty years of service—the heat by day, the frost by night, and the changing of wages. They make a covenant. Jacob sets up a stone pillar and they gather stones into a heap. Laban calls it Jegar-sahadutha; Jacob calls it Galeed. Laban says, “The Lord watch between you and me, when we are out of one another’s sight.” They swear by the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac. Laban returns home; Jacob goes on his way.
