Genesis Chapter 27 records Isaac’s blessing and the deception that brings it to Jacob.
Isaac is old and his eyes are dim. He calls Esau and tells him to hunt game and prepare savory food so that he may bless him before he dies. Rebekah overhears and quickly instructs Jacob to bring two young goats. She prepares the food, puts Esau’s best garments on Jacob, and covers his hands and neck with the skins of the goats. Jacob goes in to his father. Isaac is suspicious but, feeling the hairy hands and smelling the garments, blesses Jacob with the blessing of the firstborn. Soon after, Esau returns, prepares the food, and comes in. Isaac trembles violently when he realizes what has happened. Esau cries out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and begs for a blessing as well. Isaac gives him a secondary word. Esau holds a grudge and plans to kill Jacob after their father’s death. Rebekah learns of it and urges Jacob to flee to her brother Laban in Haran until Esau’s anger turns away.
