00:01Hello and welcome to another year of Bake Off Chat. My name is Emi. I'm Philip.
00:06And we are so happy to be back for our second year of discussing all things Bake Off.
00:12We've been waiting for this for a very, very long time. I've been waiting for this season of Bake Off
00:15for so long.
00:16And now we are in our element. Yes.
00:19In fact, to commemorate the day Philip has actually made to bring them down.
00:26I was inspired. Well, you saw this episode slightly. You got a preview of this episode, didn't you?
00:31I did. Okay, so I was actually lucky enough to see it two weeks ago.
00:35So I've been so excited for everybody to watch so they can catch up.
00:39But I will say that the episode stopped about two minutes before the end.
00:44So I didn't know who won Starbaker and I didn't know who got voted out.
00:48Seeing as you had a couple of weeks to mull this over, were you surprised by who left and who
00:52was Starbaker?
00:53I was, you know what, I really wasn't because I thought it might have been Terry.
01:00But I didn't want it to be.
01:02Yeah. So I spent two weeks being like, I really hope it's not Terry.
01:04I mean, you had an ad break. I've had two weeks to mull this over.
01:08I know. This is true.
01:09Shall we try a bit of a biscuit? Let's try a biscuit. You have an Emmy. I'll have a fillet.
01:13So which one's an Emmy? This is an Emmy. Okay.
01:15Luckily me and Emmy look... It's weird because they look exactly alike.
01:18Mine just has slightly less hair, but not that much less.
01:21Okay. I'm going to prove this biscuit. It looks very nicely baked.
01:24I was actually quite impressed because biscuits are not particularly my forte.
01:30They're good. It's very flavorsome.
01:33Lots of butter.
01:34I want to say the moist word, but I know people don't really like that.
01:37You mean the word that you just said.
01:38Yeah, exactly. It was very moist.
01:39Okay. Let's go on with the episode.
01:41Yes. Moving on.
01:42What do you think of the new cohort?
01:45The new gang.
01:47Yeah.
01:47I love them all so much.
01:49I think they're great.
01:49I think they're a really good bunch.
01:51They are so much fun.
01:52I think last year...
01:53I mean, last year I sort of grew to love everybody, but I think there was a general consensus that
01:58everyone was a little like...
02:00I mean, like, they were fine.
02:02They were fine, but this year I just was like, oh my God, this is such a good bunch.
02:07I feel like there's some real personalities in there.
02:09Yeah.
02:09So is there anybody that stood out for you?
02:12There really are.
02:12I really like Ruby.
02:14I think Ruby is one to watch.
02:15I think she's quite sassy.
02:17She's...
02:17She doesn't...
02:19She kind of snaps back, which I love.
02:21She does.
02:21And yeah, I think she's really good.
02:24Very ambitious.
02:25Yeah, she's great.
02:26But I think she's one to watch.
02:27Yeah.
02:27I think she'll do well.
02:28Yeah, she is really, really good.
02:30And I do like it.
02:31I think Paul said her biscuit was dry and her face was just black.
02:35Excuse you?
02:37Yeah.
02:37She's sassy for sure.
02:39Yeah.
02:39But shall we talk about the round?
02:41Shall we go round each time?
02:42Yeah.
02:43So round one was the...
02:44Regional biscuit.
02:45Regional biscuit.
02:47And, well, everybody did some really interesting different things, which I think...
02:51Yeah, it was a really good selection, I think.
02:54Really good challenge.
02:55And it was quite interesting as well because I think you've seen the level of talent that's
02:59in this year's Bakers.
03:01I mean, it was a close call who was going to lose.
03:03Yeah.
03:03And I think it's because all, to an extent, no one really messed up that badly.
03:08Everybody did quite a good job.
03:10Yeah.
03:10And I think that was demonstrated quite well in this challenge.
03:13I think so.
03:14So we had Briony making Bristol biscuits.
03:16Yeah.
03:17We had Dan making lemon and strawberry shrewbrew biscuits.
03:21Yeah.
03:21It was lovely.
03:23And, obviously, I think the one that didn't do as well was Terry because I think he was
03:28a little ambitious.
03:29A little ambitious, yeah.
03:29But, you know, Terry's an artist.
03:31I've always said this about him.
03:33This is true.
03:36But he obviously tried to make the lamb print in a chocolate mould on his and he just...
03:42It's just too ambitious.
03:43I don't think he had the time.
03:45No.
03:45It didn't set.
03:46It just wasn't.
03:46And then the biscuit wasn't good.
03:48Yeah.
03:48I was worried for Terry.
03:49It wasn't his challenge.
03:51You know what I really enjoyed about this challenge, though, was when Karen finished early.
03:57Who, by the way, I think is the Val and the Flo of 2018.
04:03And basically just started eating her crisps.
04:06Oh, yeah.
04:07She had a packet of squares there.
04:09She was just snacking on them.
04:10It was great.
04:11Not my first choice for a crisp.
04:13No, me neither.
04:13But, you know, fair play.
04:14Fair play to her.
04:15And I liked how she was offering it to people who were just losing their minds.
04:19Is that crisp?
04:20I mean, I think that's some real psychological gameplay.
04:23Psychological warfare.
04:24It'll work.
04:25And then the technical.
04:27The technical.
04:28Well, okay.
04:28Well, let's talk about who did well, though, in the biscuit challenge.
04:31So, Anthony with his turmeric biscuits.
04:34They love those.
04:35Yeah, yeah.
04:35Kim Joy did really well.
04:37Imelda did really well.
04:38Yeah.
04:39And Manon's shortbread.
04:41Really good.
04:42I love Manon.
04:43She's great.
04:45It's like she can't do no work.
04:46Yeah.
04:46I think she's one to watch as well.
04:47She's a really strong baker.
04:49Yeah.
04:50And as she was, in the technical challenge.
04:53Get that?
04:53Good segue.
04:55Which was wagon wheels.
04:57Or as Manon cost them.
04:57I have to say, I don't enjoy, do you like a wagon wheel?
04:59A wheelie wagon.
05:01Is that what you called them?
05:02Yeah.
05:03I really, I'm not a fan of a wagon wheel.
05:05It's not my biscuit of choice.
05:07It's not mine either.
05:08But after this challenge, I think myself and many, many, many other viewers have gone to Tesco
05:13and bought.
05:14I just don't like marshmallow.
05:16Really?
05:17Yeah.
05:17No, I was, I was actually talking to my housemate about this last night.
05:19I like them if they're like toasted on a fire, cause then they're like a little bit crispy,
05:23but otherwise I don't, I'm not a marshmallow.
05:25Not in a biscuit.
05:26No, not in a biscuit.
05:27Yeah.
05:27But it seemed like marshmallow was almost impossible to use as well.
05:30Everybody was struggling with it.
05:32Yeah.
05:32That was, I mean, it does seem like a messy challenge.
05:35Yeah.
05:35Especially at the end, when they're putting chocolate on the wagon wheel and the melts
05:39used for fingers.
05:40And just, I almost switched off the TV.
05:44We don't need, we don't need content like that on Bake Off.
05:46Really, we don't.
05:48But it was a great challenge for Ruby who sort of called it back.
05:50She did really well.
05:51Hers were so neat.
05:52Hers were.
05:53They were so.
05:54Perfection.
05:54Yeah.
05:55She, she won the challenge.
05:56They were impeccable, yeah.
05:57Whereas Anthony came last.
05:58Oh.
05:59I think his were just a mess.
06:01I just don't think he had time.
06:02Yeah.
06:02And it was just, you know, when you kind of serve someone gloop.
06:05Like that's, that's kind of what.
06:07And then Terry still wasn't great, which is when I started personally getting a bit
06:12obsessed with him.
06:12Yeah, I was worried for Terry at this point.
06:15And I had already fallen in love with him and his twirling moustache.
06:18Just a great moustache.
06:19So round three was his chance to save himself.
06:22With the.
06:22The signature.
06:23Most ridiculous.
06:24The showstopper.
06:25The showstopper challenge.
06:27Yeah.
06:28It was insane.
06:30The 3D selfie in a place that means something to you.
06:34It was so good.
06:35Um, so obviously they all had to work out how to stick their bakes together and make
06:42it 3D.
06:42And I don't know about you, but I felt like I'd become some sort of structural engineer
06:46shouting at the TV on how to do this.
06:51Um, and yeah, and it was, um, it was a mess.
06:55I think.
06:55Of course.
06:55It was.
06:56It just seemed completely disastrous for like everybody.
06:59But then, really everybody.
07:01They were amazing.
07:02Pulled it out of the bag.
07:02I mean, they were incredible.
07:03It was amazing.
07:05It was, yeah, they were beautiful.
07:06And I think it really made me laugh that everybody chose really beautiful, meaningful moments.
07:11You know, Rahul's Britain in the spring.
07:14And then Luke was just like, yeah, I went to Vegas at the last.
07:19That was great.
07:21So I'm going to base mine on that.
07:24Um, also this made me realise how many hobbies everybody has.
07:28I know.
07:28I feel like I don't have any hobbies.
07:30It's like they're expert amateur bakers, but also Anthony's climbed Kilimanjaro.
07:36Um, Ruby did the London Marathon.
07:38I know.
07:38They're all so accomplished.
07:40They're all so accomplished.
07:40I feel like I've achieved very little in my life watching.
07:44Same.
07:45Same.
07:46Um, so yeah.
07:47So, I mean, they all obviously looked incredible, but I think we have to talk about Terry's Brandy
07:54Snap mask.
07:56It was amazing.
07:58And also slightly horrifying.
08:00It did look like a death mask.
08:02When he just laid, when he laid it over and it wasn't, and it wasn't decorated yet.
08:07I was like, that literally looks like a death mask.
08:09I feel like I'm a Madame Tussauds.
08:11Yeah, for sure.
08:12Um, but I mean, it completely saved him as well.
08:15It was incredible.
08:16It was incredible.
08:17Tasted beautiful.
08:17And it tasted beautiful.
08:18Brandy Snap with, I think he used raspberry jam to glue and...
08:22Yeah.
08:22And he was the only one who used a slightly untraditional biscuit.
08:26Exactly.
08:26And it worked so well.
08:28And I think...
08:28Yeah, it really worked in his favour.
08:29What worked in his favour as well is that Paul went to art school.
08:32Did he?
08:33So I think he was like, ah, impressionism.
08:35Hmm.
08:35It was incredible.
08:37It was.
08:37It was really, really great.
08:38And I think the other things that stood out for me personally was Kim Joy's icing background,
08:43how she sort of made the...
08:45Yes.
08:45That was beautiful.
08:47That was beautiful.
08:48And then Manon's matcha Japanese biscuit was just so, so good.
08:53Yeah.
08:53Um, obviously I think the first hint of innuendo we got this year was Jan's biscuit baby.
09:00Should we talk about that?
09:02My housemate actually thought it looked a bit like a leg of ham.
09:04Oh yeah.
09:05Which I think is kind of accurate.
09:09Yeah.
09:09I mean, it got a big laugh, didn't it?
09:11But it was like, but it was still so neat.
09:13It was really...
09:13It was beautiful.
09:14That was beautiful.
09:15That looked like a cartoon actually.
09:16It looked like...
09:17It looked so good his, um, his selfie.
09:21It was gorgeous.
09:21It was so good.
09:22Um, so, sadly, someone had to leave.
09:26Someone had to leave.
09:26I didn't want anyone to leave.
09:27No, I like all of them.
09:29Didn't want anyone to go.
09:30And it was...
09:30Well, did you think it was going to be Terry or were you surprised?
09:34I thought Terry had probably saved himself with the last...
09:37Because his last...
09:39His showstopper was so good.
09:41It was.
09:41I thought he'd probably just about saved himself.
09:43Sure.
09:43So we ended up saying goodbye to Imelda.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Who had a good first round and a bad second and third.
09:49But I think it's a biscuit wasn't even...
09:51Yeah, she didn't put it back.
09:52Like, it was a bit bland and I think it was a bit simple.
09:55And that's the level we're at.
09:56Yeah.
09:57That was not...
09:58The level is just so good that if you're not...
10:00If it's not amazing, it's not, it's not good enough.
10:02Exactly, exactly.
10:04You know.
10:05And then, obviously, Manon, my favourite.
10:09One star baker.
10:10I know.
10:11So, I mean...
10:13Yay.
10:13I know.
10:14Yeah, she's one to watch.
10:15I think she did really well.
10:16She was well deserved.
10:17Well, that was actually my question for you.
10:19Who do you think...
10:20Early predictions, who do you think is going to win?
10:23I think Ruby's going to win.
10:25Really?
10:26Yeah, I think Ruby's going to win.
10:26Because she was very close to getting the boot today.
10:29I mean today.
10:30Do you think?
10:31Do you think?
10:32In the breakup episode.
10:33Well, I think it was very close between her and Imelda.
10:35And I think she knew that herself.
10:37Because she basically was saying it could have been...
10:39That could have been me.
10:40That I could have been out.
10:42No, I think she's one to watch.
10:44Because I think she currently has timekeeping issues.
10:47So, she's very...
10:51She's very over-ambitious.
10:52She tries to do a lot.
10:53Mm-hmm.
10:54But I think that once she kind of dials it back slightly, I think she's going to be unstoppable.
11:01Yeah.
11:02I really do.
11:02I think time management was her problem.
11:04Because I think she really has the skills.
11:05She definitely...
11:06Yeah, for sure.
11:06And you could tell she was so disappointed in herself.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Absolutely.
11:09Because she knew it wasn't her best work.
11:11And who do you think will be out next week?
11:16Who do you think is next on the list?
11:18I think it might be...
11:19I think it might be Terry.
11:19I think it might be Terry.
11:20I think it might be Terry.
11:21I love Terry.
11:22But I think it might be Terry.
11:23I'm happy he got through week one.
11:24I know.
11:24He got through week one.
11:25But this week definitely played to his strengths.
11:28Particularly in the Showstopper challenge.
11:31Because he's an artist.
11:32Yeah.
11:32He won't have that to fall back on next week.
11:34So, it's just about the bake.
11:37Exactly.
11:37Exactly.
11:38So, we'll see.
11:39I hope it's not.
11:41No, I hope it's not too.
11:42Because I really like him.
11:43I hope he proves us wrong in Cake Week.
11:44We'll see.
11:45Cake Week.
11:45I'm so excited about Cake Week.
11:47I love Cake Week.
11:48Cake masterpiece.
11:49Somehow.
11:51Fingers crossed.
11:51He can pull it off, I'm sure.
11:53And what do you think about Noel and Sandy being back?
11:57It's great.
11:59Honestly, I love this group so much.
12:03It just works.
12:04It just works so well.
12:06I love Prue.
12:07Bless her.
12:07In spite of last season's gaff.
12:11The opener for this episode with the Back to the Future.
12:14It was so good.
12:15It was so good.
12:16At the preview episode, as we've previously mentioned I went to, she did a Q&A as well and
12:22basically said, I haven't dared talk about it for a year and they used it as a joke.
12:27So I guess it's like, it's okay for us to laugh at now.
12:30It's all good.
12:31Enough time has passed.
12:32It's not too soon anymore.
12:33Right.
12:33We could talk about this all day, but shall we?
12:35Yeah, we should probably go back to work.
12:36Shall we wrap things up?
12:37Thank you so much for joining us.
12:39Thanks for joining us.
12:39Yes.
12:39And please leave all of your comments in the comment section.
12:42We will get back to you on your thoughts on the episode.
12:44And yeah, we'll see you next week.
12:47The Cake Week.
12:47Bye.
