00:03The Iran-US war may be entering a dangerous new phase.
00:07Until now, the confrontation has largely been centered on Iran, Israel, the Gulf and American military positions across the Middle
00:14East.
00:14But now there is a warning coming out of Tehran that could fundamentally change the geography of this war.
00:21Iran is reportedly considering strikes against U.S. military assets in Europe if Washington launches another major offensive against Iran.
00:30The report, first published by the Financial Times, says Iranian military planners have examined possible targets in southeastern Europe, including
00:39Bulgaria and Cyprus.
00:41And this raises a very important question.
00:44Is Iran preparing to take the war from the Middle East to Europe?
00:48And if that happens, how will Europe respond?
00:51More importantly, will Donald Trump come to the rescue of European allies just as the United States has been protecting
00:58and supporting its Middle Eastern partners?
01:01Let's understand what is happening.
01:05The basic calculation in Tehran appears to be this.
01:08If America expands the war, Iran wants to make sure that the cost of that escalation is not limited to
01:14the Middle East.
01:15Iran has already targeted American military assets in the region.
01:19But if the United States launches another large-scale offensive, Iranian commanders are reportedly considering expanding their response.
01:27And Europe becomes relevant because American military operations depend on access to bases, logistics facilities, refueling points and other infrastructure
01:37outside the immediate Middle East.
01:39Take Bulgaria, for example.
01:42According to the Financial Times report, Iran has considered U.S. assets there after Bulgaria approved the use of its
01:49Besmer Airways for U.S. refueling aircraft.
01:53In other words, Tehran's thinking could be,
01:56If a European facility is helping the American war effort, it could become part of Iran's target list.
02:02And then there is Cyprus.
02:04Cyprus is particularly sensitive because of its geographical location and Britain's military presence on the island.
02:11So from Iran's perspective, Europe isn't necessarily being treated as a completely new theater.
02:18It could be viewed as an extension of the American military network.
02:21But that is exactly where the danger begins.
02:28This could be where we need to be careful also that what could be the Iranian target.
02:34The reports speak about potential military targets, not confirmed attack plans.
02:40The most obvious category would be American military infrastructure or facilities supporting U.S. operations in Europe.
02:47That could include bases, aircraft support facilities, logistics infrastructure, other military-linked assets.
02:54But the reported Iranian thinking appears to be going beyond military bases.
02:59The Financial Times also reported that Iranian forces have examined the possibility of attacking sub-sea fiber-optic cables in
03:06the Strait of Hormuz.
03:08That tells us something about Tehran's broader strategy.
03:11Iran may be looking at the war not simply as a missile-versus-missile conflict.
03:16It could increasingly become a war of infrastructure, logistics, communications and economic pressure.
03:22Remember those attacks on the AI centers in the Middle East?
03:26And the Strait of Hormuz also remains at the center of all this.
03:32Now, UAE has had enough.
03:35This is clear because UAE announced the suspension of trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice.
03:44So, this is the blowback.
03:45And this is significant as well because the UAE has historically been an important economic channel for Iran.
03:51The decision came after the UAE said it detected Iranian ballistic missiles targeting the country.
03:57Iran, however, has denied responsibility for the missile incident.
04:02So, Tehran is facing a difficult situation.
04:04On one side, Iran wants to maintain pressure on the United States.
04:08On the other, every additional attack risks pushing countries that traditionally maintained economic or diplomatic engagement with Iran further towards
04:18Washington.
04:19And that brings us to Europe.
04:23So, the question is, will Europe respond?
04:26This is perhaps the biggest and the most pertinent question which will be hogging the limelight.
04:31Because Bulgaria and Cyprus are not simply random countries.
04:35They are European Union member states.
04:37And Cyprus also has Britain's military presence.
04:40So, if Iranian missiles were to hit an American facility on European territory, Europe would face an extremely difficult choice.
04:49Does Europe treat it as an attack on an American military asset?
04:53Or does it treat it as an attack on European territory?
04:56The distinction could become extremely important.
05:00NATO has already signaled that it is prepared to respond to threats against its members.
05:05A NATO official said the alliance would take whatever steps necessary to defend the members following the latest reports.
05:13And remember, European governments have already condemned Iranian threats and activities on European soil.
05:19Earlier this year, a group of countries including the UK, France, Germany, Bulgaria and others jointly condemned Iranian state-linked
05:27threats and attacks in Europe.
05:29So, Tehran would have to understand one thing.
05:31A strike in Europe could produce a very different response from a strike in the Middle East.
05:41And then there is Donald Trump.
05:43This is where the entire calculation becomes even more complicated.
05:47Donald Trump has repeatedly made clear that America will stand behind its partners and allies.
05:53We have seen the United States respond militarily when its forces or partners come under attack in the Middle East.
05:59But what happens if American forces are attacked in Bulgaria, or Cyprus for that matter?
06:04Will Trump respond directly?
06:06The answer is likely to depend on the scale and nature of the attack.
06:10If Iran hits a military facility and causes American casualties, Washington would face enormous pressure to respond domestically also.
06:19And if the attack happens on the territory of a NATO member, the political consequences become even bigger.
06:25But Trump would also have to consider the possibility that a U.S. response could turn a regional war into
06:32a much wider confrontation.
06:34That is precisely what Iran may be trying to exploit.
06:40And hence, the Iranian threat to Europe matters the most here.
06:45The significance of the latest report is not necessarily that Iran is about to attack Europe.
06:50There is no confirmation that such an attack has been ordered.
06:53The significance is that Iranian military planners are reportedly thinking about what happens if United States expands the war.
07:02That is the warning.
07:04And it tells us that Tehran is preparing for a conflict that could become much broader.
07:09For Europe, the message is equally clear.
07:12The geographical distance from Iran may no longer provide complete protection from this war.
07:18For America, the calculation is even more complicated.
07:21If Iran attacks U.S. assets in Europe, Trump would have to decide whether to absorb the attack, respond selectively,
07:30or dramatically escalate.
07:31And for Iran, the calculation is, can it raise the cost of the war without triggering an even larger American
07:39and European military response?
07:40Because that is the gamble.
07:42And that gamble is now going to be played around one of the world's most important waterways, the Strait of
07:49August.
07:49And potentially, according to the latest reporting and the reports that have come in so far, much farther away in
07:56Europe as well.
07:57So the biggest question now is not simply whether Iran can strike beyond the Middle East.
08:01It is, if Iran does, can the war still be contained?
08:06Because once American and European territory becomes part of the battlefield, this will no longer look like just another Middle
08:13East conflict.
08:14It could become a much wider confrontation between Iran, the United States, and their respective partners.
08:20And that is precisely the scenario the world will be watching in days ahead.
