00:01welcome back grant and danny on the fan we are together in our navy yard half street studios
00:07today thanks much for making the show part of your day we're discussing commander's camp and
00:13preseason game two saturday afternoon in detroit all of our training camp coverage
00:17is brought to you by paul henry's window installation paul henry's windows.com your
00:22clear home improvement choice dan quinn asked today about whether or not jayden daniels will
00:27play on saturday do you know if jayden's gonna play saturday yet once i know like the health of
00:32everybody else around then i'll have a better sense for it so he's on record as saying the health of
00:37everyone around him is going to determine what happens with daniels it is very strange to me
00:44in the preseason when teams are so guarded like there are a lot of teams by the way that just
00:49come out on monday and they just go here's what's happening this week our guys are gonna get like i
00:54remember mike shanahan remember how guarded he was of course he said nothing ever there was a
00:58switch he would flip right at the end of the preseason after cut down day where he went from
01:03giving you the injury report and going through all the motions and saying all these different
01:07detailed things to okay he's in regular season mode and we'd kind of laugh walking away from the
01:12podium like he hit the switch and now we know he would confirm that certain players were actual
01:17human beings like that's as far as he would go the way i remember it though was early in the
01:22week
01:22each week he would kind of tell you we're thinking 10 to 15 plays this week for those guys and
01:26then
01:26we'll get them out i don't understand what the benefit is in the preseason when the game result
01:30doesn't matter like there's a debate to be had whether or not even during the regular season
01:36midweek giving a who's gonna play who's not gonna play publicly actually helps you or not at this level
01:42but let's just pretend with the exercise and go along with it and say that it does in the preseason
01:47who cares so it is a little bit weird to me guarded to me that they have been so like
01:53last week
01:54quinn kept kicking the can down the road he's like i'll let you know closer to the game
01:57and then they they never did like there was never the hey here's how many snaps and who's gonna play
02:02and there was an investigation by like standing and nicky javala and come to go okay here's who
02:06came out for extra warm-ups i guess these guys aren't playing tonight that was at northwest
02:09yeah like during like during the course of the game and just never happened to me that's weird to me
02:14is all again this is one of those like nfl paradigm things and i'm not necessarily ripping quinn and the
02:18team but i would want to create adversity if i could i would love the opponent to know who's gonna
02:24play i might even tell them what plays are coming just to see how much more difficult i could make
02:28it for my guys because the whole point is you're going to deal with a lot worse than the preseason
02:33game uh where you know you don't have the element of surprise i mean imagine you know going up against
02:37uh luke keekley at various points over the course of of his career where he's calling out your
02:41formations in place based on film study not based on something you gave away at the podium
02:45you're going to encounter really good players who know what the hell's going on and we'll take your
02:50lunch i want my players to experience that but they're like let's make sure we have a punter punt
02:54that's not going to punt for us during the regular season instead of put guys in adverse spots i'll
02:59never get it you can listen to us coast to coast wherever you're at free and available on the odyssey
03:03app wherever you are jay is out in la doing just that what's up jay you're on great and danny
03:08how are you
03:09hey what's up guys how you doing hey buddy doing great uh so i mean i i've been listening i'm
03:15actually
03:15with you guys on the larger point i do think david needs preseason reps but i kind of disagree with
03:20um
03:21i think it was grant and i think you know that this idea that i was better being out shouldn't
03:25mutually affect the decision because there's only one guy i to me i feel like that oversimplifies what
03:31uh preseason reps are trying to accomplish like because i don't think the question isn't can
03:36jayden physically go out there and play of course you can but it's kind of like what are you trying
03:40to gain from putting him out there so if you're trying to sharpen his timing communication
03:44to my offense then i do think the quality of his environment matters and so to me alec reggie like
03:51he's not um he's not some interchangeable piece right he's the guy who's initiating
03:55as we play so he you know and building that quarterback center rhythm with jayden is important so
04:00no i don't think his absence should be some automatic detail that keeps jayden on the sideline but
04:04i also don't understand the argument that it should have zero influence the game goes out
04:08there for eight to ten snaps behind a shuffled offensive line then what are we evaluating behind
04:13a what offensive line you said a shuffled offensive line well it's one guy and as of right now that
04:21guy hasn't done anything the entire summer so my point is it's it's not like they're down to gulbin
04:27or gulbin can't go and they're moving some tackle over to center for the day it's the guy
04:33that they said is competing for the job all spring who is going to be playing center like i don't
04:39know
04:39who trey hill is but he's listed fourth on the center depth chart if you only had that guy available
04:44this weekend i could consider that but i think i think what happens very easily is we conflate two
04:49different points like if you don't see the merits in playing the quarterback in the preseason we've had
04:54that debate where we happen to be on one side but i could see a reasonable case on the other
04:58just
04:59talking about the the totality of work and are you ready for the regular season what's the best way to
05:02do
05:02that if if it's a if then correlation if the starting center nick allegretti who to your point
05:09which needs to be hammered home so much who has done nothing in training camp at all because of
05:12injury if he can't go then our quarterback can't go oh my god is is the official if then right
05:19i'm
05:20going to go back to a rhetorical question he asked during that call too because i actually thought it
05:24was perfect he said what are we trying to accomplish with getting jayden daniels out there
05:29and he he asked that rhetorically kind of while defending the idea that the timing with allegretti
05:35is super important and perhaps if that is what you're trying to accomplish what i'm trying to
05:40accomplish with getting jayden daniels back on the field the reason i think he should play needs to
05:44play i've been on record i'm going to keep saying this i'm a broken record on this number one reason
05:49that i'm playing jayden daniels in the preseason he has played twice since the middle of october twice
05:54that's it i want him to be on a football field because he hasn't been on a football field enough
06:00in a long time so the the very nature of going through those motions and breaking that sweat
06:06important number two he has never gotten a play call into his helmet in a game from david blau nor
06:13does he ever run this offense in a game i would like him to do that before he runs an
06:18offense against
06:19the number one defense in the league arguably in the philadelphia eagles in a game that matters
06:22whether allegretti is there or not does not affect number one it doesn't affect number two
06:27number three is and this one is going to go over very poorly this will be a fart in church
06:32every you know this this will be the one that floats around twitter for a couple days and everyone gets
06:36angry about but i think jayden daniels would benefit from contact in this preseason game being hit
06:44now i'm not suggesting anything overly dangerous or terrible or where he could get hurt but he has not
06:51finished a game his last three games he has started the game and either been carted off or or carried
06:57into the locker room by trainers or walked off the field or whatever's happened three straight games
07:02dating back to early october of last year we're coming up on 10 months ago he has not started a
07:08game and left a game healthy i think mentally it would be a huge deal to have that happen once
07:14and
07:15so that's not something nick allegretti affects either so these are the things i care about almost
07:22none of them are his timing with center julian good jones who that timing is going to come they're fine
07:28they practice every day together he's getting first and second team reps they're going to have another
07:33joint practice against the baltimore ravens if it's about like timing or seeing things the same i think a lot
07:40of those things can be done without two series in a game but the stuff i do care about let's
07:46hear
07:46david blouse voice hey we're running jet sweep 23 17 niner let's hear it in your helmet once you know
07:53let's get out there and play in your third game since my kid was dressed up as a leprechaun in
07:59october
08:00let's go to shane in fairfax what's up shane
08:05um lieutenant um commander danny i play football oh that's what football players do football players
08:13play football that means you're a football player danny lieutenant great how you boys doing today
08:18my son is letting you know right now he's ready for the center position i told you boys a long
08:23time
08:24ago this center position is going to come back and be a nightmare and here we are down a left
08:28tackle
08:29and now this center position is coming up so that's two out of your three starting lots so
08:34here we are not even the season that we're already going to be juggling the old line and we didn't
08:38even have contact on and and fire bullets yet so let's call it what it is adam peters you know
08:45to
08:45my opinion man i i blame him on this on this because we had a center here and we could
08:51have brought him
08:51back for hardly nothing but we let him walk but you know it is what it is but uh with
08:57that being said
08:58man it's it's it's daniels needs to be on that damn football field he needs to get some contact
09:04like you said he's not finished a game and three starts and what to say that mr daniels is not
09:11bubble wrap daniels now let's call it what it is appreciate you shane do you know how many players
09:17not not quarterbacks typically but how many players danny have said to me over the years
09:23i need a little bit of contact you know i need to to get ready like running backs or different
09:29positions or different players or what have you coming and i'm talking about players coming back
09:34from injury like for the mental last hurdle to clear the ability to feel like i can do this
09:40all this guy has heard since the winter is how he's too brittle and he gets hurt too much and
09:46every time he plays he gets hurt you just can't tell me there wouldn't be immense value
09:51in him going out there taking on a little bit of contact playing football because he's a football
09:56player and we don't need to put him in bubble wrap it's okay he's gonna be okay and getting out
10:02of
10:02the game and being able to play a week from then on the center position really quickly we can get
10:08back
10:08into this in a second but i'm going to ask this and we'll come back to this are we overreacting
10:12a
10:12little bit about how perilous how they've handled center is because assuming allegretti who is
10:21fully expected to be healthy in the next couple of weeks and to be ready for week one assuming he
10:26is ready for week one i know he's been banged up a lot like he's only missed a game or
10:29two i think
10:30over the last three or four years if he plays 17 games at center they're fine right that's not that
10:37bad of a plan to just have a guy that's gonna be better at picking up uh making calls and
10:43seeing
10:44things coming before they happen than tyler biotish we'll get back into that but we're focusing on
10:50that he's out right now and if he's out you're screwed and i think that's true like how big do
10:55you go with your backup center it's hard to get a guy in free agency to come in here who
10:59started for
10:59seven years to just be nick allegretti's backup so i want to get into that next there's probably
11:04somewhere between that and a guy that's played two snaps in julian good jones right there's a happy
11:08medium there maybe we're focusing right now on this being like a a detriment to the team when
11:14you don't have allegretti but it's not like he's out for four to six weeks i mean supposedly he's
11:19going to be back on the practice field next week or so gnd on the fan
