01:00You know, it was this time last year that they really ramped up towards the grand final.
01:04And I think for all the teams in contention, it's crunch time now, really.
01:08Australia looked well gone, but then, you know, if you're 8th or 9th, you've got to start winning events.
01:13Right.
01:13If you're in that middle bit, then, you know, pressure's on, isn't it?
01:16Sure. And as you mentioned, obviously, they started really strong.
01:19They finished last year, obviously, as champions.
01:21Where do you think it's gone wrong?
01:22And what could be improved to kind of tweak that?
01:25Ultimately, they're not getting off the start as well as they would like.
01:28They are averaging 6th place at mark one.
01:31So in the middle of the pack, in my mind, that then means, you know, it's very easy, potentially, to
01:36maybe gain two, but also lose two or three.
01:38Because, you know, you're quite limited on your decision making.
01:41And if you look at the Australians, they're just getting to the top mark on average, three and four.
01:46But I think even more than that, they're tending to be first, second or third, or they're quite way back.
01:51And I think even if you're at the back, where you obviously would think you don't want to be, but
01:55after mark one, you've perhaps got that little bit more opportunity to make some decisions.
01:58Rather than if you're in the pack, it's just, like, hectic.
02:01Yeah, sure.
02:02And I mean, the last few events seem to have been smaller race courses.
02:05And we've got the expanse of Portsmouth and the Solent with a few obstacles in the way.
02:09What's the secret to success here, do you think?
02:12Yeah, last year was pretty unique.
02:13There's a fort.
02:14There's an old Napoleonic fort out there, which sort of turned into a bit of a roundabout.
02:18There's some channel posts.
02:20The grandstand, I mean, there's 10,000-seater grandstand, I believe, this year, you know.
02:25So if the wind's coming from there, that's going to be quite interesting.
02:28But, yeah, the boats get right into the fans on the shore.
02:31There's the current.
02:32You can't ever look past getting to mark one in a good position.
02:35What I do think here is the slightly bumpier racetrack, hopefully a good sea breeze, like, you know, like Portsmouth
02:42can deliver.
02:43And a little bit more expanse to let your wheels run, to get your boat speed up.
02:47So back on the flight controllers for me.
02:49And would you say it's a bit more similar to Perth than what we've seen so far?
02:52Yeah, it's definitely that way.
02:54Yeah.
02:54I mean, you know, the thing with the UK is you've got to be ready for anything.
02:58You know, what's amazing about Perth is it just turns up.
03:03You know, the doctor is always on call.
03:04Sure.
03:05Whereas here, you can get a great sea breeze.
03:08Yeah.
03:08You could also get a lighter one.
03:10And then the current becomes massively involved.
03:12Interesting.
03:13But certainly confident that we'll get the sea breeze.
03:15It's been so hot here lately.
03:17And, you know, if we get that, then, yeah, it's more like Perth, but it's definitely not as windy as
03:21that.
03:21So it should be more of a level playing field for all the teams.
03:24Well, Halifax in particular was quite an up and down event for Emirates Great Britain in particular.
03:28They had that medium day on day one, a big crash on day two, and were out for the rest
03:32of the event.
03:32How did you see that one?
03:33Well, I think you're nice by saying up and down.
03:36I thought it was a bit of a disaster for them, to be honest, missing that second day and wing
03:40breakers and all the rest of it.
03:41But, I mean, it feels like it ramps the pressure because they were a good early season.
03:45They had a disaster in Rio.
03:47They scrapped well in Bermuda.
03:50They were okay in New York.
03:53And then that was bad.
03:54So you've got to think, as defending champions, there's so much pressure.
03:59Stuart Biffle, you know, we sort of started the season saying there was a lot of pressure on him.
04:03Suddenly Emirates GBR have gone from going great with him.
04:07So he won his first event.
04:08So Stuart's slipped in well.
04:09But right now you've got Australia with Ian Jensen, the wing trimmer they lost, looking unbeatable, or certainly right up
04:17at the top of the tree.
04:18And then the British struggling a bit.
04:20So I think for Stuart, for Emirates GBR, the pressure's on here.
04:23Home crowd as well.
04:24Home crowd's going to expect.
04:25They'll expect.
04:26And they need.
04:27And what's interesting that you said about the home crowd and the pressure, from what I've seen so far in
04:34Cell GP,
04:34it seems that the pressure of a home event can get to a team and they don't often perform well.
04:40I mean, I couldn't remember the last time a home team won their home event.
04:44No, no, I mean, no.
04:46I mean, the Kiwis have won in the UK the last two times.
04:49But Emirates GBR was second last year.
04:52Stuart, I mean, we said about Stuart, but Stuart actually raced in the 2012 Olympics.
04:56Yeah.
04:56Got a silver medal in front of the home crowd.
04:58So maybe that's actually something Stuart can really bring to the team.
05:01You know, him and Hannah both got silver medals in 2012.
05:04So they're used to that embracing of it.
05:06And, yeah, I mean, it's how you frame it.
05:08The pressure, the support, whatever it is.
05:10I think it should be an advantage.
05:12You know, they're traveling a couple of miles from their house.
05:14The Aussies have got to get here from the other side of the world.
05:17Yeah, yeah.
05:17And so in that sense, jet lag, physicality-wise, you should be in better shape.
05:21Everyone on the shore is going to be rooting for you.
05:23You've just got to channel it the right way.
05:26Yes, there's a bit of pressure that could be negative.
05:28And as you say, it hasn't seemed to quite work out right yet.
05:31But I think for Emirates GBR, it could be a good thing.
05:33Well, we can find out now because earlier on, me and you got the pleasure
05:37of catching up with Stu Biffle and Dylan Fletcher.

05:43First off, can we just get everything straight?
05:45After that incident in Halifax, are we all good to go for Portsmouth?
05:49Yeah, the wing arrived back last week and the team have been working hard.
05:52So she'll be fresh and re-vinyled and ready to roll.
05:56Okay, nice.
05:56And it was obviously a bit up and down that weekend for you guys.
06:00Was there any takeaways, key takeaways that you had?
06:02I think it was actually shaping up to be a really good Sunday for us.
06:05We were feeling strong.
06:06We had some good practice laps and the team was in a really good place.
06:10So it was very disappointing to have the incident.
06:13But, you know, in sport, you've got to push the limits.
06:15And we overstepped it that morning.
06:17And I know, Stevie, obviously we were chatting before about the season for you guys so far.
06:22At this point in the season, we're kind of past the halfway point now.
06:25How are you feeling looking back on what's happened so far and what's to come?
06:29Yeah, it feels like it's been quite an up and down season for us.
06:32But ultimately, we've been generally banging away those consistent results other than a few mishaps.
06:37But I think that we're feeling good heading into our home event.
06:40Definitely feel like there's a lot of pressure on our shoulders.
06:43But we love that, don't we?
06:46That's what we wake up for.
06:47You raced London Olympics.
06:49So you're used to sort of racing in front of a home crowd.
06:52It's going to be last year when I came down and saw the size of the stand, it was pretty
06:55mind-blowing.
06:57You were with another team last year.
06:58We won't mention that one.
06:59But, you know, you now got the Union Jack back on.
07:03What does that mean?
07:03And what does the home support actually bring to the team?
07:06Yeah, it's incredible.
07:07I mean, you know, it does actually make a difference.
07:09You see it in the media at the minute with the football, you know, that they're getting all behind the
07:14players.
07:15But, yeah, in London, it was, you know, it does pick you up a little bit.
07:19And I'd say it's even more extreme in CLGP and Portsmouth.
07:22So close to the shore.
07:23You're really here and feel the energy there.
07:26And, yeah, just, you know, super excited for me in my first time with the Union Jack in Portsmouth.
07:32Really looking forward to it.
07:33And as Stevie said, obviously, you've joined a championship team after you guys won last year as well.
07:40How has that been as an adjustment?
07:42And have you felt any extra pressure because, obviously, you're joining a winning side?
07:45Yeah, I mean, it has its pros and cons for sure, you know.
07:48I was, like, super happy to be back with Dylan and, you know, a few of the other teammates that
07:54I know quite well.
07:55But, yeah, certainly for me, it was a big, big boost to fill with Goob's leaving.
08:00And, yeah, I felt a little bit of pressure, you know, getting on the boat and settling in to the
08:05new relationships on the boat that I've had to work out.
08:09But, yeah, it's been great, great fun learning that.
08:12And, yeah, I think, like, you know, we started the season really well.
08:16And I think that kind of dropped a bit of pressure off my shoulders a little bit.
08:20And, yeah, I think we soak up the pressure as a team now and get the pundits quiet for now.
08:26And how would you say that?
08:27Well, I was just going to say, you guys always sailed together.
08:30So everyone probably knows.
08:31But gold medal in Japan at that Tokyo Olympics.
08:34But communication seems so important in these boats.
08:38You get so little time to sail.
08:41Do you actively have sessions where you're analysing that sort of comms and trying to break that down?
08:47Or how do you try and shortcut that?
08:49Yeah, it is difficult with the lack of training time.
08:51It's obviously the same for all teams.
08:53But communication is something we work really hard on.
08:57Understanding as it changes with the different configurations, like five up, six up, four up.
09:02And, yeah, there's a lot to work on.
09:04But, as you say, with that history, it's been really good just pushing that forwards and developing.
09:08Yeah, Halifax was a small course.
09:10New York was a small course.
09:11Rio was a small course.
09:12This is maybe more of a classic course.
09:15What do you think are going to be the key points to win in here?
09:18Oh, yeah, I think it's going to be interesting with the four.
09:21Oh, yeah, roundabout.
09:23The roundabout, yeah.
09:24We saw some slightly different courses last year.
09:27It's the jibe, you know, round mark one.
09:30So, I think here it's as ever.
09:32Get off the start line well and then you're in good shape.
09:35Amazing.
09:35And, obviously, last year, a narrow loss to the black foils in the final as well.
09:41This year, you've got all the momentum behind you with the crowd, with everything.
09:45Obviously, you came out strong last year.
09:47What's your strategy going into it?
09:49Just top line.
09:50You don't have to get too detailed with us.
09:51I think, yeah.
09:52I mean, we're obviously gunning for the win.
09:54But, ultimately, this is about the big picture, the long season, trying to make it into that top three.
09:58So, just managing the risk during the weekend and trying to deliver on the starts and then see where we
10:04end up.
10:05And then, once you get in the final, we'll give it everything.
10:07Yeah, I've heard you mention that a couple of times on the comms as well.
10:10Like, when earlier on in the season, things were a bit hectic out there.
10:13There was a few crashes, a few incidents.
10:15I've heard you guys just talk internally just about, let's just get it home.
10:19Let's just finish this race.
10:20Big picture.
10:21He always says big picture.
10:22Big picture.
10:22I do say that a lot.
10:23When he was going down in Auckland, there was a storm in the background.
10:27It was some picture, wasn't it?
10:30How much does that impact your strategy out there on the course?
10:34Yeah, I think a lot of the time I'm saying big picture, just mostly to myself.
10:37Just don't push, don't take too much risk.
10:41And, yeah, but then, obviously, we pushed it a bit too hard in Halifax.
10:46But, I think, coming into this event, ultimately, we're saying we're just about the season.
10:51But, it's a home event and we want nothing more than to win.
10:54Awesome.

11:08Yeah, pressure's going to be on for sure, you know, and they'll be hoping for a good result, won't they?
11:12But, again, this point of the season, the pressure's on all the teams because, other than Australia, who look well
11:17set, everyone else won't be happy with where they are.
11:19Well, I'm going to take some of that pressure and I'm going to put it on to you, Stevie.

11:27for SLGP in Portsmouth.
11:29SLGP in Portsmouth just got smarter.
11:31Stevie, what's your predictions?
11:35The Kiwis have won the last two timings in the UK, so I see that as, you know, it's a
11:41positive.
11:41They obviously like it here, they're comfortable here, it's their kind of condition, slightly bigger racetrack, bit more space, use
11:46the boat speed they've got so well.
11:47They've had one event back, they came back really well, just missed the final in Halifax, so it's hard to
11:53look past them being right in the mix.
11:54I do think the British will embrace the home crowd, I do think it is an advantage, or it should
12:00be, so it's on them and coach Robbie Wilson to frame that right.
12:05And, you know, I mean, without sounding boring, the Bonds Flying Roos look very good, so I'd be surprised if
12:10they weren't three of the teams at the very top.
12:14And then again, a little bit more space on the racetrack, Swiss have looked quite good.
12:18So, you know, the Swiss with a bit more space, maybe they could do well, they were third here last
12:23year, but yeah, I'm going to go black foils for the win.
12:26Okay, I'm going to go, I'm going to switch it up a bit, and I'm not going to follow the
12:31trend.
12:32I'm going to go for the Swiss, like you mentioned, I think, what was really impressive, when the wind got
12:36lighter in Halifax, they kind of flourished, and it was really cool to see that, and I think they'll bring
12:40that confidence into this event.
12:42I'm going to go with the Spanish, because Diego and Los Gales, they were just really, really on it in
12:49Halifax, and obviously took the event win, which is really cool to see.
12:52So they've got loads of momentum, and then I can't go past the home crowd, the home team, Emirates Great
12:57Britain.
12:58I'd love to see them take a win here in Portsmouth, after narrowly missing it last year, and seeing Pete
13:04Berling go up and get the wheel.
13:05Everyone, I was in the grandstand, everyone was fuming, so it'd be cool to see that redeemed here today.
