Aisha Wahab is projected to win California’s House special election, defeating Democrat Melissa Hernandez 53% to 47%. Once sworn in, Wahab will fill Eric Swalwell’s vacant seat and become the first Afghan American member of Congress. Her victory would give Democrats 213 House seats, while Republicans retain a narrow 218-seat majority. Wahab previously made history as California’s first Muslim woman and Afghan American elected to the state legislature. The progressive Democrat has also drawn attention for her positions on Israel policy and inequality.
