A historic moment unfolded in Washington as House Speaker Mike Johnson officially swore in Representative Aisha Wahab of California on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Wahab, who represents California’s 14th Congressional District, won a special election runoff on August 18 to fill the vacant seat left by former Representative Eric Swalwell. Her arrival marks a major milestone as she becomes the first Afghan American ever elected to the U.S. Congress. Her swearing-in also brings the House to 433 active members, with 214 Democrats, narrowing the Republican voting margin to a single seat on party-line issues. From growing up as the child of Afghan refugees and a former foster care child to serving on the Hayward City Council and California State Senate, Wahab’s political journey has drawn national attention.

01:47But the idea here that you had help from the Democratic side of the aisle and some potential threats by
01:54the Democrats to punish their members, you ever wanted to maybe punish some of your members as they voted against
01:58you?
01:58As you know, we've not done that.

02:06But it passed and we're grateful we move forward and we've got some very important legislation done given that you
02:12know we'll do it again today.
02:13But you couldn't have done that without it was done for them.
02:15We would have got it done.
02:16How so?
02:17Well, I would have twisted arms as always do.
02:46I would have twisted arms as always do.
