3 Psychological Traps of Suffering
How do we respond when suffering enters our lives?

According to Pulkit Sharma, some people become hopeless and give up. Others become obsessed with their suffering — constantly thinking about it, searching the internet and AI for answers, and repeatedly asking themselves: What will I do? How will I deal with this?

And then there is another response: becoming a martyr to suffering — believing that perhaps one's suffering is proof that one is doing something noble, selfless, or morally right.

At first glance, these responses appear very different. But psychologically, they have something important in common: They keep the mind revolving around suffering.

In this excerpt from a 2017 talk, Pulkit Sharma, Clinical Psychologist, Psychoanalytic Therapist, Spiritual Counselor & Author based in Pondicherry, India, explores how even our attempts to deal with suffering can become psychological traps.

Perhaps the deeper question is not simply: “How do I get rid of my suffering?” but: “Why has suffering become the central point of my life?”

When we begin to understand and change the dysfunctional attitudes through which we relate to suffering, something deeper begins to shift — and suffering itself can begin to heal.
