President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” the latest move in his ongoing feud with Canada and a symbolic assertion of U.S. influence over one of North America’s most prominent shared waterways.

00:00We're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario,
00:04effective immediately to Lake America.
00:08That's going to take place right now as I sign the order.
00:12Do you have anything to say about it, Ben?
00:14Yes, sir.
00:14So this is a straightforward but important executive order.
00:18It directs Secretary Burgum and the Department of the Interior
00:21to update the Geographic Names Information Service
00:24to reflect that Lake, once known as Lake Ontario,
00:28will, from this day forward, be known as Lake America.
00:31This is a lake that has most of its volume in the United States.
00:34The deepest parts of the lake sit in United States territory.
00:37So this will reflect that this is an American lake.
00:43Okay.
00:44And we filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else.
00:48We notified all of the various people that we have to notify.
00:53So we've done everything that you have to do.
00:55And this is official, effective immediately.
