00:00US President Donald Trump has ordered the US Federal Government to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America,
00:07meant escalating trade tensions with Canada.
00:10The order applies only to US Federal use and does not require Canada or international bodies to recognise the new
00:17name.
00:17And finally, I guess the purpose of this more than anything else is we're going to be changing the name
00:24of Lake Ontario,
00:26effective immediately to Lake America.
00:30That's going to take place right now as I sign the order.
00:34Within hours, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change
00:38and said Lake Ontario would continue to be known by its historic name.
00:42Carney said the name had been used for more than 400 years
00:46and predated both Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.
00:51Trump's decision also drew criticism from within his own party,
00:55with Vermont Governor Phil Scott describing the move as petty and disappointing.
01:00Trump has previously ordered major geographic name changes,
01:04including renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for US Federal use in January 2025.
01:11This announcement came after US-Canada trade talks collapsed last week,
01:15with both governments blaming each other for derailing three days of intensive negotiations.
