00:00Commanders face the Ravens in their final preseason game, 6 o'clock tonight.
00:05It's almost done.
00:06Our poll of the day is, should the Commanders play Jaden Daniels in the first team offense?
00:13Right now, early voting is a 50-50.
00:16Oh wow, right down the middle.
00:17You can vote at Junk's Radio on Twitter.
00:20So last night you had a bunch of preseason games, or kind of go in order of the games.
00:27And a couple of starters did play.
00:30Now in the Bill Steelers game, the starters did not.
00:32So Aaron Rodgers, I believe, was 0 for the preseason.
00:35Did he get any reps?
00:36I might have forgotten the first game.
00:37I don't think he got any reps in the preseason.
00:38I don't remember him being in there.
00:40I don't think so.
00:41And they also have Mason Rudolph, who has been around for a while.
00:45He didn't play last night.
00:46It was Drew Aller, who they drafted out of Penn State.
00:49He was 9 for 18 for 88 yards.
00:51And Will Howard, who they drafted last year, he had a couple touchdown passes, did have a pick.
00:56And then on Buffalo's side, they started, their third string guy, he played the whole game, Shane Buscelli.
01:04Buscell.
01:05Buscell.
01:05Okay, he's from SMU.
01:06He was featured in third stringer or country singer yesterday.
01:09That's right.
01:09On the show.
01:10He ended up going 26 for 38 for a buck 96.
01:14So, that was a game in which, basically, the starters did not play.
01:19Right.
01:20Although, when you look at, like, Buffalo, I was surprised.
01:26Well, I guess this is Frank Gore Jr.
01:29Did you know Frank Gore Jr. was on the Buffalo Bills?
01:32I have no clue.
01:33Maybe.
01:34Yeah, I mean, he's been around for a couple years.
01:37Yeah, he's been in the league a couple years.
01:41Is this Pops a Hall of Famer?
01:42Frank Gore?
01:44He was really good.
01:45He's up there in terms of total yards.
01:49He strikes me as a classic compiler.
01:51Like a guy, now, I'll give him credit because it's hard to stick around that long, especially
01:54at the position he played.
01:56Right.
01:56And the physicality that he exhibited when he played.
01:59Yeah.
02:00Is he top 10 all-time rushing?
02:03I'd have to look at the list.
02:04I don't know.
02:07I don't know if he's, does he really strike you as a Hall of Famer?
02:10I don't know.
02:11I don't feel like he was ever the top one or two running backs in the game.
02:14He's Gaylord Perry of the NFL.
02:16I'm going to put him in a Hall of really good.
02:18But, you know what, if you want to put him in there when he's all bent over on a walker,
02:22that's fine.
02:22He's third.
02:23The third leading rusher of all time.
02:25He's got 16,000 yards.
02:27But he can't get in first ballot.
02:28He's got to wait.
02:29He's got to wait, wait, wait.
02:30I did not realize he was that high.
02:32I'm going to say, yes, he is going to be in.
02:34He did play a long time.
02:35I can't believe how durable that guy was.
02:38What's his best season in terms of yards?
02:40Did he ever get over?
02:411,700.
02:42That's pretty good.
02:43That's a lot.
02:44You know, it's funny.
02:44I was talking to Drav about this yesterday.
02:46So Brian Mitchell, you know, who everybody I think agrees eventually is going to end up
02:50in the Hall of Fame.
02:51Played 14 years in the NFL.
02:54And Brian is like a biking maniac.
02:56You know, he's a great golfer.
02:59You know, whatever.
03:00He's just a good dude.
03:02I was watching that Hall of Fame ceremony.
03:04I told you the other day when guys were walking around.
03:06Every time they're all hunched over like Ronnie Lott.
03:09And I talked to Brian and Brian was complaining about being tired from his wife.
03:12I said, do your knees ever hurt?
03:14I mean, like you played 14 years in the NFL.
03:15And by the way, I can't think of a more physical player than you.
03:19Like, Brian Mitchell, his name was made from just blasting people.
03:23Like, the most feeling.
03:24He's just, yeah, I feel great.
03:26That dude's just different.
03:27He doesn't have any knee pain.
03:30He doesn't have any sort of pain.
03:31Doesn't have like the CTE stuff.
03:32Like, you see all these guys with the NFL just like bent over, broken.
03:36The game just breaks them.
03:38Brian Mitchell is different.
03:40He is a freaking robot.
03:42Brian Mitchell, this is crazy.
03:44He's just different.
03:44I believe he's second all time in total yardage.
03:48Yeah, yeah.
03:48That's why eventually he has to be in the Hall of Fame.
03:50The only guy ahead of him is Jerry Rice.
03:51Yeah, he has to be in the Hall of Fame.
03:53I mean, that's just nuts.
03:54But I've played no physical sports.
03:58I just played wuss sports.
04:00We go to commercial.
04:01I haven't gotten up in two breaks.
04:03I have to push with both hands.
04:05Yeah, you're best.
04:06He's a cyborg, and we're not.
04:09It's crazy.
04:09That's just the easiest way to describe it.
04:11It's true, but even amongst NFL guys.
04:14Even amongst other elite NFL guys.
04:17I know.
04:17He's just...
04:18That guy is in the elite, elite point.
04:21Jerry Rice is like that, too.
04:23Just no pain?
04:24Well, I mean, you see him get around.
04:26He looks like he could go out there and play tomorrow.
04:28Darryl Green.
04:29Darryl Green.
04:30I mean, Jerry Rice definitely will chase after you if you had to live in a golfer.
04:32But do you know what the difference is?
04:33And Jerry Rice, I'm sure, has taken his hits.
04:36Every play, Brian Mitchell had contact.
04:38Yeah.
04:38Every play.
04:39Initiating contact, and then he would fight you.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Yeah, it's crazy.
04:44He's just fun to talk to.
04:45I mean, he's a machine.
04:46The Patriots were in action against the Browns.
04:49Drake May did not play.
04:50They played Baron Morton and Tommy DeVito.
04:53I don't believe Drake May played at all in the preseason.
04:55Or did he play a little bit in the first one?
04:57I have to double check.
04:58I feel like he played in the first one, but I'm not sure.
05:01The Cleveland Browns did not play Shadour or Deshaun Watson.
05:04That meant Dylan Gabriel got some shine, and he took advantage of it.
05:0812 for 15, a buck 86, three touchdown passes.
05:12His passer rating was 157.9.
05:16Probably going to be the highlight of his professional career.
05:19I will say this.
05:20That preseason game.
05:20If you watch the three touchdown passes, they were very Dylan Gabriel-esque.
05:24They were all like five to seven-yard passes.
05:27Give him credit.
05:28That guy's got in the end zone.
05:29Were they rollouts?
05:30Were they rollouts?
05:30No, at least one of them was in the flat.
05:34He threw a short one to a tight end, it looked like.
05:37He just muscled a defender.
05:38He had one that was a slant over the middle that just was kind of poorly defended
05:44or split the defense.
05:45This stat line, this performance, this is exactly why you shouldn't consume
05:49or pay that much attention to preseason football.
05:52It's the third game.
05:53You're playing against almost exclusively second and third stringers.
05:56None of the skill players that you see listed in these box scores,
05:59for the most part, are going to make a difference on any NFL roster.
06:03So, I mean, good for him that he had a good performance that he put on tape,
06:07but I just don't read that much into it.
06:09He's like a third string quarterback.
06:11So two games.
06:12That's good.
06:12He played well enough to stick at that number three spot.
06:15Look, you can make a lot of money and last in the NFL for 15 years
06:19being a second and third string quarterback.
06:21That's a good living.
06:22So two games right there that we've gone through,
06:24four quarterbacks that did not play, four starting quarterbacks that did not play.
06:28Now, the 49ers-Raiders game did feature a starting quarterback.
06:32Kirk Cousins got a little bit of action.
06:35He was eight for 11 for 51 yards against the 49ers.
06:39The 49ers, they just played Adrian Martinez and Mac Jones,
06:42didn't go with the starting quarterback.
06:43But Kirky did some work.
06:46Mendoza, of course, is who everybody's paying attention to.
06:49By all accounts, kind of struggled.
06:50Threw an interception, was just seven for 14, 57 yards.
06:54So I don't know if they've announced that Kirk is going to be the starter in week one,
06:57but everybody expects it.
06:58Done deal.
06:59Kirk Cousins is going to start the season for the Vegas Raiders.
07:03He threw two interceptions, I think maybe you meant.
07:05One was off the hands that the coach had admitted the receiver should have caught.
07:09The second one, I don't know, probably was more clear.
07:12You're talking about Mendoza's?
07:13Yeah.
07:13The one he threw last week, he just overthrew the receiver behind him.
07:18He didn't have a great preseason, but he was a rookie.
07:21And last preseason game was the Chargers and Rams.
07:25Rams won 20-18 for what it's worth.
07:27Justin Herbert, though, did play, had a 65-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Johnson.
07:32So that is starters getting a little bit of work, feeling good about themselves.
07:37The Rams notoriously never play any of their guys in the preseason.
07:41Ty Simpson, who was kind of a controversial pick by the Rams,
07:46he's kind of balled out in the preseason.
07:48He has played well.
07:49He finished this game 18 for 23, so had just five incompletions,
07:54had a touchdown pass in the game, also ran three times for 10 yards.
07:58You know what might be the best thing for J.J. and McCarthy?
08:01Go to the Rams.
08:02Go to the Rams.
08:03Be a backup.
08:04Get coached up.
08:04Go over there.
08:05Get coached up like Baker Mayfield.
08:06Go over there.
08:07Just redo it.
08:08Now, Baker just relied on the talent he had.
08:11But, yeah, go over there and just learn.
08:13He'd be the backup to Ty Simpson.
08:15Yeah.
08:15He'd be third straighter.
08:16I mean, I know it's not ideal.
08:17I know this doesn't really work out right now in their personnel.
08:19Well, I would think Stafford retires after this year.
08:21So, Simpson will be the starter next year.
08:23That's my idea.
08:23Go there.
08:24Learn under McVay and get another crack at it.
08:26Go through that McVay car wash.
08:27Come out nice and clean on the other end.
08:29Yeah, but he's supposed to have the quarterback whisperer in Kevin O'Connell.
08:32Well, it turns out he's not.
08:34Maybe he's under-talented.
08:35Maybe he was overdrafted.
08:37It's possible.
08:37We'll find out.
08:38If he goes and fails with McVay, which is where I suggest they try to engineer a trade
08:42to, or if he gets released, sign there, he might just suck.
08:47I backed a bad horse in J.J. McCarthy.
08:49I'm realizing it.
08:50I'm ready to cut my losses.
08:51I don't think McVay was that excited about taking Ty Simpson.
08:55Oh, yeah.
08:55That was the whole thing.
08:56He was pissed about it.
08:56Well, because he wanted immediate help.
08:58Yeah.
08:59You know, not necessarily because he thought Simpson stopped.
09:00He wants to make a Super Bowl run this year with this group.
09:04When will Aaron Donald decide if he's going to make this comeback?
09:08I mean, most people now are assuming that he's going to play probably next week.
09:11Well, that is right now.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Yeah.
09:14I would assume it's pretty soon.
09:16They're getting on a plane and flying for 100 hours to Australia.
09:20Or does he wait until like week seven?
09:22Just punt the first portion of the season.
09:25I mean, I guess you could do something like that.
09:28You think they wouldn't take him whenever he decided to play?
09:30I'm not saying that they, of course.
09:32I'm just saying.
09:33I don't know.
09:34A guy who wants to be a part-time player, I mean, you do you.
09:36Whatever you want to do.
09:37I don't care.
09:38I would have thought it would have already been announced, but clearly I was wrong.
09:42But you've got a bunch of games tonight.
09:44I don't know.
09:45They'll make 10 games tonight?
09:47Preseason games?
09:48Got to get those cutdowns in on Sunday.
09:50Like I said, the third preseason game to me is just so meaningless in my world.
09:55I'm going to actually have to remember.
09:57I'm going to watch at least the start of it because I want to see how many starters play.
10:01If they're not playing any starters, I'm not going to focus too much on it.
10:05It's also like it could be seen because this is not what DQ does is play as starters in the
10:09last game for the most part.
10:10The key, key, key guys.
10:12It could be interpreted by the team as a panic move or something.
10:15You don't want to signal that.
10:17You're going to see a lot of Sam Hartman and Callie McManus tonight, I would have to guess.
10:21Yeah, yeah.
10:23Almost exclusively.
10:23They might even protect Callie McManus and see a lot more Sam Hartman.
10:27That's fine.
10:28Maybe Sam plays the whole game.
10:29Yeah.
10:30They've seen enough.
10:31Callie McManus has played so well just in terms of locking up a backup spot that it's pretty much universally
10:36thought that it'd be a big gamble for them to release him and try to bring him back.
10:42They may still try to do it, but he's shown he's worth another look-see.
10:48By the way, did the station Twitter account tweet out something to the effect of, what would you do if
10:54the commanders released Nathan Callie McManus?
10:58Well, in other words, to expose him to being picked up.
11:01That's all.
11:02I mean, I think that the way he's performed in the preseason, I think it would be insane to not
11:07keep on the 53-man roster.
11:09Right, but that's why they tweeted that, because most teams typically are keeping two these days.
11:13And so now, especially with Mariota being banged up and apparently wearing a fairly large brace for what's supposed to
11:20be a pretty minor injury.
11:23Can't expose that.
11:25I don't think you're going to expose him.
11:27By the way, if this was the regular season, the match-ups tonight in the final preseason game lineup is
11:34horrendous.
11:35Falcons-Dolphins.
11:37Yuck.
11:39Looks like the Falcons, by the way, don't want to start Tua.
11:42They might have to start Tua.
11:44They want to do whatever they can to not start Tua, because he looks so bad in the preseason.
11:48And the Dolphins are direct.
11:49We know that.
11:50Texans-Panthers.
11:52Dreadful lineup of games.
11:54Giants-Jets.
11:55It's a pretty bad four-game slate.
11:58Bucs-Jags.
11:59Oh, there's way more games than four.
12:01Saints-Cowboys.
12:03Bengals-Packers.
12:04Bengals-Eagles would be nice.
12:06That's a decent one.
12:07And Seahawks-Chiefs.
12:09But for the most part, a lot of dreadful, dreadful games.
12:12And then you've got Vikings-Broncos.
12:13If you want to watch your boy, JJ, you can watch Vikings-Broncos, 9 o'clock NFL Network.
12:19I'm just rooting for him because everyone is against him.
12:21So that makes me root for him.
12:23Well, I found the real dud, when it actually counts, NFL Week 1, Jets at the Titans.
12:30Yeah, that's a bad one.
12:31That's your big dog, biggest dog game on the slate.
12:35And I haven't even looked at the rest of the games.
12:37But that was jumping out at me.
12:38I think Cakes and I are going to be hosting a party for...
12:44Is that official?
12:45It's not official.
12:46I said, I think we're going to be hosting a party for the Commander's Opener.
12:50Okay, let's leave it vague until it's official.
12:52Yeah.
12:53I would assume it's going to happen.
12:55I mean, it's thrown out to you guys.
12:56You don't have time to promote it.
12:57I don't know.
12:57Until I see confirmation, I'm not going to put any sort of details out there.
13:02There was email communication this week.
13:05Mm-hmm.
13:06Sometimes it takes a while to get from sales to us.
13:09Understood.
13:09Sometimes you're lag time.
13:11They're going to cross the T's, dot the I's, all that sort of thing.
13:14All right, so I want to hear all...
13:15Because I wasn't able to go to the Nats game yesterday.
13:17Yeah.
13:18I want to hear all about that next segment.
13:19You can tell me something.
13:19I'm really glad we went.
13:20We've got a lot to tell you about.
13:21I want to hear about it.
13:22Do we have eight segments to talk about it?
13:24What's funny is I was...
13:26Because JP forgot.
13:28But when I drove up to...
13:30You know, walked up to the hotel, they had pulled his car around.
13:33Mm-hmm.
13:33And I went to the guy, and I said, this guy's not...
13:36He's not going to be here until about 2.30 or 3.
13:38I told them the day before.
13:40Oh, you did?
13:40They forgot.
13:41Oh, okay.
13:41Sorry.
13:42So he goes, so should I park it again?
13:44Are you talking about C tomorrow?
13:46It wasn't C tomorrow.
13:47No, no, no.
13:47It was the other guy.
13:48It was the other guy.
13:48Skinny guy.
13:48Yeah, yeah, the skinny guy.
13:49So he wasn't there.
13:50I told C tomorrow the day before.
13:52I said, hey, I don't need my car until like 1.30.
13:55See you tomorrow.
13:55Yeah, you can't do that the day prior.
13:57It's hard for those guys to remember.
13:58Do you have a brain in your head?
13:59But you can't do that the day before.
14:01It's hard for those guys to remember.
14:02You used to park there.
14:03The afternoon guys, I'm going to call them the afternoon guys, they're not there in the
14:06morning.
14:07Yeah.
14:07So the only way to communicate with them is in the afternoon.
14:10But they're going to forget that.
14:11And in the afternoon, it was see you tomorrow.
14:12It wasn't the skinny guy.
14:14Yeah.
14:14Well, anyway, I told the skinny guy, this guy's not going to be here until about 3.
14:17It might want to park that car again.
14:18So you might want to park that thing.
14:19So he just kept driving and parking.
14:20Do the double work.
14:21But I want to hear all about it.
14:22Yeah, it worked out, and I actually made it home in time.
14:25Good.
14:25Very good.
14:26Right when the carpool pulled up, I was behind them, so my kid didn't have to be alone for
14:31a while.
14:31Which would have been fine for like 5, 10, 15 minutes, I think.
14:34Yeah.
14:34I think Cakes and I were talking about it.
14:36If you have a 9-year-old, you could probably leave him for about 15 minutes.
14:39That's a self-serving entity right there.
14:40A 9-year-old, they could get in the house.
14:42Yeah, if the house is on fire, they could open the door.
14:44They can turn on the TV and just get brain-rotted by the TV until you get home.
14:48They wouldn't understand to get out of the burning house.
14:49I made it just in time.
14:51All right, we'll get into that next here on The Junkies.
14:53Don't go anywhere.
