02:00what's up what's up what's up everybody out south africa what's good
02:02yeah i mean i was saying just uh welcome to hip hop nation tv south africa
02:09thank you man thank you what's up what's up everybody out south africa what's good
02:13so good so good man um yeah man uh can you please just uh introduce yourself my brother
02:20sure yo what's up everybody my name is punchline you know i'm saying hip hop artist you know from
02:25new york city hail from the lower east side of manhattan uh i've been rhyming for some time now you
02:31know worked with the lyricist lounge was in a group punchline in wordsworth was one fourth of a
02:37group called emc and also i'm currently you know a ghostwriter as well as doing my own
02:43material working on new stuff as well good so how would you say um you started rapping what
02:50what inspired you uh what started me rapping uh i had an older brother that used to do it and
02:57and whatnot so i used to see him do it and it made me get into it that way so
03:01watching him do it inspired
03:02me and then he um my mother introduced me to a hip-hop song called rap is the light with
03:10the sugar
03:10hill gang so she had took me to a record store and they played it and that was my first
03:14time
03:15ever here in hip-hop and you know me so that was kind of like my influences of everything around
03:20me
03:22so like when did you like um decided like you were going to start like uh doing it like professionally
03:30i would probably have to say once i graduated high school and going into college is when it started
03:38being more of a serious thing um you know the underground hip-hop scene was like the thing
03:43at the time so um i met um wordsworth through a friend of mine they went to high school together
03:48and then me and him kind of was like just going to all these places together and one thing led
03:54to
03:54another we performing at the lyricist lounge show and um that kind of snowballed everything that was the
04:00start of it so like what inspired you guys to like um start doing albums um um well to start
04:13um doing
04:14albums together we was always me and him both were solo artists and uh we were searching you know
04:20trying to get a record deal that was the thing at the time right so somebody had suggested that me
04:25and
04:26him pair up together and do it as opposed to just being two separate artists so they was like yo
04:31if
04:32you guys do it together you probably can go further so we got together and um we just started rapping
04:37on
04:38any and everything going any and everywhere we can go and one thing led to another you know we landed
04:44a production deal with these two guys poking tone from the track masters they produced a lot of stuff
04:50for naz will smith foxy brown alor anthony hamilton uh slew of stuff all right so like um how did
05:02you then
05:02um start joining the the emc uh emc came about i had uh met a guy by the name of
05:11uh djjf he um
05:14he was producing an ep for planet asia and he he hired me and words to rap on one of
05:20the records
05:21where it didn't make it i wound up doing the whole record myself and um that kind of started everything
05:26because i met him and he did the punching words ep for us and from there he invited master ace
05:34to one
05:35of our shows he saw us and liked us and um ace was like yo i want them to be
05:41my opening act i'm going
05:42over um going overseas to europe to talk i want them to open up for me that was the disposable
05:47arts
05:48tour and that kind of started everything so me and words opened up for him you had ace strict was
05:53uh
05:54ace's hype man so everybody just liked the chemistry from that tour and it was like yo you guys y
06:00'all
06:00should be a group and then that became like the little chat online that we were a group so we
06:04just
06:05decided to try it because like i remember on the disposable arts that's that's where he featured
06:12you guys right yeah well that was our first recording with master ace we uh did a song called
06:18i like that and then we did um block episode so like because i also even remember on was it
06:26also on
06:26long hot summer also right yes we was on long hot summer a song called travelocity
06:33how was that experience like because because i realized like that that's where you guys like
06:38even became more popular um well definitely at that time rocking with ace was good because he was
06:44already an established artist and being from the jews crew and coming from that world um he kind of put
06:49us out there he was our first experience being put in front of a european crowd because anything me and
06:55words did prior to that was in the states so now we're in europe and london and germany
07:01and croatia we're going to all these places so it opened us up to that whole audience that me and
07:07him didn't know that we even had so did you like find it more challenging like um performing
07:15outside of the other countries because like you're like a friend crowd no it actually was easy it was
07:24it was fun i didn't our very first show i didn't know what to expect so you know we just
07:29do what we
07:30what we do so we go out on stage and we perform and then um i just noticed the response
07:35back me and
07:36words that they was booing us but somebody came backstage say yo you guys killed it i was like nah
07:42they booing he was like nah they saying boom so boom at the i guess that was the language in
07:47london
07:47they was like yo that means i killed it i was like oh all right though you know what i
07:52mean
07:54so you know from there everything just was you know we just did us
07:59cool cool cool because um then uh how did you then start uh you and punch i mean you and
08:06words uh
08:07you guys were also on the twice in the lifetime uh on the black star one how was your experience
08:13like because um yeah so the cool the cool thing with that um with um most deaf and words they
08:23kind
08:24of grew up in the same neighborhood words was friends with one of his brothers dcq and then um
08:30um me and words knew quality from the underground rap scene because we used to be at new eureka's
08:35poet cafe which was a scene in new york where all the artists used to go perform and rhyme but
08:41then um
08:42the cool thing about it was we wound up me and words linked up with q-tip from a tribe
08:47called quest
08:47and he had started a crew he was starting a new crew called the umma family which consists of slum
08:54village tribe uh most deaf punching words and a female rapper by the name of jane doe so when most
09:01and quality decided to record an album together most was like yo we got to get them on on the
09:07project
09:07because you know they they dope and you know they down with tip so that can kind of help the
09:12thing
09:12so they brought us in and we rhymed over fortify live which was a talib quality and dj high tech
09:20single
09:20but then later on high tech remixed the beat and which is what you guys hear now which wind up
09:26becoming twice in a lifetime oh wow that's amazing um plus i mean like i saw like i was i
09:34think it was
09:34a couple of weeks ago you were performing it on was it the polo versus lounge yeah so the 30th
09:42anniversary of the uh lyricist lounge um so they had you know all these guys performing care was one
09:49talib quality bahamidea mr cheeks grand pooba kid capri and they decided like yo we forgot to
09:56include the original lyricist lounge members so it was some talks and dialogue that went on
10:02and they asked quality to bring us all out so quality's like all right if i'm gonna do it i
10:07got
10:07to do it right so he reached out got worries flew him into town jane doe flew her in and
10:13he's like yo
10:14we're gonna do twice in a lifetime so i was like all right cool so that was like our first
10:18time doing
10:18that record all together unfortunately most couldn't make it because he's overseas but
10:23that was our first time doing that record all together which made it really dope
10:28wow wow i mean seeing seeing that i mean it's a song that it's been there for like i mean
10:33for decades
10:34now um and like what what would you what would be your advice to artists like how how do they
10:40maintain that consistency that you have like you and punch have and the others uh first have love for
10:48what you're doing you know i mean don't do it just for the money you gotta have love for what
10:52you're
10:52doing because that's going to help you want to stay even stay consistent at all but just keep
10:58working on your craft just keep doing it you know i mean find new innovative ways to make it
11:03entertaining for yourself you know i mean in that way it'll entertain the people
11:09so like are they um are they like any new age artists that you enjoy listening to
11:17um i've always listened to everything i'm not like just an underground rap fan i like everything so
11:24it could be somebody like a you know like an underground rapper like elzai you know then on
11:30the flip side of things i might be listening to young thug or listening to little baby or listening to
11:36the baby and whatnot so i listen to everybody um everybody got their place in the game so you
11:42know there's certain ones i like more than others but i bumped the baby joint you know i mean i
11:46bumped
11:46that that naz uh album that he got right now magic um i listened to the new elzai album that
11:53he got
11:53right now wordsworth got a joint with my man dj jf they got an album out right now which is
11:59pretty
11:59dope y'all go online and check that and whatnot so i'm listening to everything man
12:05plus plus i saw you did a track uh recently with nico right yeah nico is which is a talib
12:12quality artist we got a record called live from the blue note oh okay so so how was that like
12:19recording that track uh it came together kind of organic um what happened was uh nico is was he lives
12:29in orlando florida and al all lyrics was visiting and they asked him to jump on the record and he's
12:35like yo i'm gonna try to get you know the fellas on there so they reached out to me in
12:39words and then
12:41after he got all of us they let quality hit a record and quality was like oh i gotta be
12:46on this
12:46quality jumps on the record and then you hear the record that's out right now live from the blue note
12:52by nico where's so everybody make sure y'all go online and stream it download it it's out now
12:58good definitely so um yeah that means i gotta share it here yeah share that share it um plus i
13:06mean
13:06you you you released your new single win right um yeah win so like what what what what what what
13:15would be your advice to people on on financial freedom and things like that because i saw it
13:22relates to that on your music video um you know so you got to maintain that financial freedom first
13:31you just got to know what you want to do go after it you know i mean obtain it it's
13:36not going to happen
13:36overnight so you got to maintain your patience you know i mean but always stick to your plan and
13:42you're going to get to where you got to go you know i mean don't give up don't care what
13:46the
13:46outside chatter is you always just keep doing what you're doing and stay consistent and you're
13:52going to get to a place where you're able to call the shots and just save up your money and
13:56reinvest
13:57in yourself you know it's cool to buy brand new sneakers chains and all that other stuff but you you
14:02know if you're trying to move forward with your music career that money that you make reinvest in
14:07yourself you know i mean maybe get with a couple of your partners y'all put your money together
14:11start a company invest in yourselves and move forward from there
14:17you mentioned like um you know uniting um working with your team and everything um how do you think
14:26we can create that unity um i'll repeat that i'm sorry how do you think we can um achieve that
14:35unity
14:37achieve unity in in the hip-hop game um i just think the the the youngins need to keep their
14:46ears open to the elders and take that advice that they give and don't knock them for being older
14:51the older ones need to respect how the young cats is doing it and you know i mean look at
14:57what they
14:57doing because we both can learn from each other they know that the music business how they know it now
15:02with the streaming and all the numbers and being you know tech savvy with social media we might know
15:07the process of how a record is supposed to be made and can kind of give guidance in that way
15:12so i i just
15:13think we all need to just stop bumping heads with one another and just have an open dialogue and then
15:19we could just feel off of one another true true true true true true i'm mentioning open dialogue
15:25yeah i think i think we do have like a lot of miscommunication amongst each other
15:30yeah so so like uh are you are you planning on doing an album yeah i'm currently working on an
15:38album
15:38right now uh it's being entirely produced by producer out of boston his name is confidence
15:44so we actually got about nine songs done so i'm a few from being completed i'm just waiting on some
15:50features um i had a couple of tech problems with my pro tools but now i'm back up working so
15:56i can
15:56hurry up to finish it i've got about maybe four or five more to finish and then it'll be done
16:01you know
16:02what i mean so look for it to come soon we in may now so i would probably say possibly
16:07in the fall sometime
16:12uh uh fall meaning uh september around that time oh september oh yeah like about september august
16:19uh there'll definitely be a record from the project probably coming out this summer possibly july you
16:24might get a record from it cool cool are there going to be like any recent events that you're planning
16:30on
16:30three um well i know july 12th to the 17th in new york city um at the blue note we're
16:38going to be
16:39rocking with talib kwali so you're going to get some more of the uh blue note record and other
16:44black star joints you know they got the new black star album coming out tomorrow you know what i mean
16:48um but yeah so you know me and worries we'll be rocking at the uh blue note in july july
16:5412th to the
16:5517th in new york city make sure you go online purchase your tickets and you know you're going
17:00to give you're going to get a whole bunch of new videos and stuff from me so i got a
17:03lot of new
17:03material coming out oh that's amazing i can't wait definitely gonna share it um yeah so so um is it
