The northern lights have appeared farther south more frequently in recent years. Anna Azallion says the increased activity is tied to solar maximum, the most active phase of the sun's 11-year cycle.

00:00Nope, you're not imagining it. The northern lights really have been showing up further south
00:03more often in recent years. It's because the sun recently went through the most active part of its
00:0811-year cycle called solar maximum. During this time, the sun produces more frequent and more
00:13powerful eruptions that launch into space, sometimes in Earth's direction. The stronger
00:18the storm, the further south the northern lights can spread. The sun's activity peaked from late
00:222024 into early 2026, so we're likely past that peak. But strong solar storms and widespread
00:29auroras could still happen for several more years.
