00:00on the wise heart right we make it right call kyle right hotline uh nfl linebacker ohio state
00:06linebacker and 97 one the fan host bobby carpenter joins us now bobby welcome to the show hey thanks
00:13for having me on guys it's uh excited to get some actual football rolling at just about all the
00:19levels we got one more not even a week what is it five or six days until we get a
00:23little nfl football
00:24starting up here on wednesday night we are we're ready for all the football uh i was at a oh
00:30gosh
00:30it was uh a black river northwestern game last friday that's how much i'm jonesing for some
00:37football my brother's also the defensive coordinator so that helps um but i do want to know like
00:41ohio where are you with this ohio state where have you set the expectations for this team
00:47uh you know i think every year with ryan day i look at like when the big i mean what
00:52he always says
00:52you'll win the big 10 make make the playoffs uh win a game or two like hopefully that's getting
00:57you to stick around maybe the semi-final depending on where you come in and uh then on you know
01:02sometimes those special years where it all kind of lines up veteran quarterback you stay healthy
01:07there's some continuity on the team like then you can maybe challenge and hopefully go try to win
01:12you know go win it all and so i think this team is different than last year probably just as
01:19good
01:20and so hopefully better probably a little more experienced the quarterback uh different on
01:26defense obviously lost a lot of really talented players um so that's going to be you know a tough
01:31spot but the guys that came in really good matt patricia's phenomenal arthur schmidt is going to do
01:37a great job on the offensive side with no doubt so they have all of the ingredients just you need
01:43a little bit of luck and you need to stay healthy yeah i mean they allowed just nine points per
01:47game
01:48last year three defensive starters returning eight gone a lot of transfers coming over though what's
01:53the what's the early perception of how you guys think this defense is going to go i think i think
01:58it'll be different than last year like nine points a game i don't know if we're going to be able
02:01to
02:01replicate that i mean they were historically good last season they had three guys drafted in the top 11
02:06four guys off the board in the top 40 i mean they were as good as you were going to
02:10get and in like
02:11sunny and sunny was obviously good caleb was great there was expectations there
02:16i don't think people expected arvell to be as good as good as quickly as he was and the same
02:22thing with caden mcdonald and both those guys accelerated much quicker us caden curry who had
02:27you know double digit sacks last year so a lot of production is gone but you brought in some guys
02:33that
02:33are pretty good christian allegro earl little jr james smith claire sal like you feel good the guys
02:39that are there have been developing i think this defense might be a little more aggressive this
02:45year last year one of the things like as good as they were didn't really force many turnovers
02:50didn't really uh you know have a ton of sacks throughout the entirety of the season i think
02:56this this year could be a little different with that where they maybe could be a team that maybe
03:01gives up a little more points but maybe makes some more impactful plays on the defensive side
03:06bobby which games i know everybody circled the texas game i'm not as high on texas as everyone else
03:12i think they're very talented i'm not a believer in sark uh i'm probably a little bit more interested
03:17in the oregon game myself what games have you circled as the one the matchups you're most curious
03:23about this year though uh you know i think that oregon game because they're very talented i mean
03:28texas is really talented too uh but dan lading's kind of entering that ryan day phase that he was in
03:34a
03:34couple years ago where you've been a head coach at a big time program for a number of years now
03:39i think
03:39ohio state obviously has you know bigger internal expectations probably than oregon with their fan
03:44base but i think nationally people look at oregon it's like hey this team they've got phil knight
03:49they have all the players they need they should be able to go compete and win a national championship
03:55and i think dan lading's made the playoffs after the number one seed two years ago they've lost kind
04:01of in a rough fashion gotten beat up a little bit when you start looking at you know how those
04:05games went
04:06and so people you know start raising the question okay like is it time and the question is like if
04:11not now then when like that's all part of it so you know they've got to deal with that but
04:16that oregon
04:16team is going to be really really talented so curious to see how that's going to ultimately go
04:21and um you know part and parcel of that i think just uh it's crazy to say this like you
04:29never thought
04:30you'd drop penn state from your schedule and pick up indiana and it'd be a tougher schedule but
04:33you know the situation with having to play over at indiana i think it'll be the hot most hostile
04:39environment in the world but anytime like you're going to play a team that beats you defending
04:43national champs i think there's going to be some juice to that yeah it's six ap top 25 teams on
04:49the
04:49schedule for the preseason at least uh is there is the perception around columbus that you're you
04:55guys kind of enjoying this because last year it felt like a sleepwalking in many ways yes there was
04:59texas early but there it just wasn't the toughest schedule and then you got to the big 10 title game
05:03in
05:03indiana kind of knocked you didn't knock you around but you saw what happened in that game
05:06and then miami it just kind of felt like it wasn't tough enough during the regular season is that the
05:10vibe well obviously you have texas week too but then you look like you said you know oregon
05:18usc uh indiana you know you've got michigan on there like it is illinois i think is going to be
05:25pretty decent as well i mean i was ranked and so i think that the schedule gets your attention as
05:30a
05:31player it got your attention all off season so allows you to be more hyper focused as you work
05:35through that and like you said the sleepwalking element and yeah you coaches can hype it up but
05:40when you realize you're probably only playing two and a half quarters as a starter and you get in
05:45there and you're dominant but it's hard to keep that that edge sharp when you're not really going
05:51through a four-quarter football game except for a handful of times a year and this year
05:55maybe you suffer some losses at some point but you're going to be more battle tested and i think
06:01that that's more important than the in the long run bobby i i love stuff like uh like like how
06:08fan
06:09bases ebb and flow with coaches uh jim trestle was beloved from that first year in columbus and nothing
06:17really ever changed that uh urban meyer having done what he did at florida and utah before him and
06:23bg was was beloved pretty much walking in that door ryan's obviously had a different kind of path
06:30here uh but he went he wins that first national championship you get the michigan win again i'm
06:35just curious what does another natty do for ryan day and just his legacy and kind of how he's perceived
06:41as his buckeyes head coach do you know how many coaches have won multiple national championships at
06:47ohio state one that's the answer so he would be the second and as good as urban was as good
06:56as my
06:57coach tress who they're putting in the ring honor man i love tress uh you know probably sticking only
07:04to my father with the influence he's had on my life but you know ryan if he wins another i
07:10mean that's
07:11it's rarefied air and uh said he wants to stay here for another 10 years i was hoping he'd stay
07:17for five just get through his kids as i believe his youngest daughter is an eighth grader and if he
07:21does that like he's going to be the second all-time winningest coaching program history and i don't
07:25know if there's going to be coaches to coach for 27 years anymore like woody hayes so you know he's
07:30got that for me he's a phenomenal coach he's a great man he fans are very lucky and i hope
07:40they
07:40realize how blessed they are when you have a guy who is as good a coach as he is who's
07:44also as good
07:45a man as he is uh because those guys are rare you know people talk about him not being a
07:52real buckeye
07:52and everything like i mean he got this job when he was you know in his in his 30s 39
07:57you know it's
07:58the first time in my life where i was closer in age to the head coach than the players not
08:03the
08:03function of me getting older okay but i've got to watch run through this job
08:09you know kids grow up here and he's dead he's like
08:16before she knows nothing else other than the state of ohio and being a buckeye
08:20so
