It's being called 'RAMageddon.' A huge surge in demand, primarily from AI data centers, is causing a worldwide shortage of memory chips. Learn how this affects everything from graphics cards to smartphones and why prices aren't coming down soon.

00:00Ramageddon is upon us.
00:01But why?
00:02Why is a single component driving up the cost of everything from gaming PCs to consoles?
00:08The biggest reason is AI.
00:10Modern AI data centers need enormous amounts of high-performance memory to train and run
00:16large-language models.
00:17That demand is so massive that memory manufacturers are prioritizing their biggest enterprise
00:23customers over the consumer market.
00:25The problem is that only a handful of companies produce most of the world's DRAM chips.
00:31When more production shifts towards AI servers, there's simply less supply available for gaming
00:36PCs and laptops.
00:38But it's not just RAM that's affected either.
00:41Memory is used in graphics cards, SSDs, smartphones, handheld gaming devices and consoles.
00:47So when memory prices rise, the cost of all those products tends to rise too.
00:52Manufacturers are investing billions into expanding production, but new chip fabs take years
00:58to build and ramp up.
01:00That means supply isn't expected to catch up overnight.
01:03Essentially, it's a global fight over one of the most important components in modern computing.
01:08And until memory supply catches up with AI demand, don't expect RAM prices to come back
01:14down anytime soon.
