00:42The new action horror film from director Adam Wingard.
00:47The same guy behind The Guest and the recent Godzilla vs Kong movies.
00:54In this video, I'll walk you through the story.
00:57Tell you what actually works.
00:59What completely falls apart.
01:02And give you my honest final verdict.
01:06Plus whether it's even worth your time this weekend.
01:09The story follows last.
01:12A former army spanner now dealing with heavy PTSD who runs a run-down Taylor Park in the middle of
01:21the desert.
01:22Her ex suddenly drops their young daughter off with her for the weekend.
01:27At the exact same time, nearby a secret military lab run by a strange scientist, played by Dan Stevens, has
01:37been creating genetically engineered super soldiers.
01:41Of course, things go wrong.
01:44The soldiers escape.
01:45And they head straight forward to Leicester's trailer park.
01:49Let's talk town first.
01:52This movie clearly wants to be a mix of things.
01:56A grindhouse Leicester, a serious PTSD drama and a political statement about the military.
02:03All at once, it browses heavily from that old school John Carpenter sneak music style.
02:12And honestly, the opening minutes had me hooked.
02:16There's even a countdown timer tacking down to when the chaos begins.
02:21And genuinely builds tension.
02:25Now the cast.
02:26Adira Arduna play Celeste.
02:29And she's easily the best part of this film.
02:32She brings really physical thoughtness about also a soft.
02:37Protective side, whenever her daughter is on screen, you believe her as both a soldier and a mother.
02:45Dan Stevens, on the other hand, plays the mad scientist with such a buzzer.
02:52Over the top, energy that it almost feels like a different movie.
02:58Rebecca Hall is here too, but barely gets anything to do which honestly felt like a waste.
03:06Punching wise, the first act movie is fast and fun.
03:11But once the super soldier actually breaks loose.
03:15The movie slows down in strange places.
03:18Random side characters pop in and out without adding much.
03:23Quick content warning.
03:25There's a decent amount of gore and violence.
03:29Some intense shooting sequences shoot from a first person point of view.
03:34Plus a side plot with adult content that honestly feels bit out of place.
03:41As for the third act poem, this is where it stumbles the most.
03:46After all that build up the final confrontation feel roost and doesn't hit as hard as it should.
03:55Don't get me wrong, there's really style here, the lighting, the snit score, some genuinely cool camera
04:03work during the action scenes. But the script just doesn't know what it wants to be.
04:10The super soldiers barely get any backstory. And some side plots go absolutely nowhere.
04:18Still, even with all these flaws, I never found myself bored for long days.
04:25Just enough energy on screen to keep you watching.
04:29Honestly, during that early track stop shootout scene, I actually leaned forward.
04:36The camera work made it feel so tense.
04:38But by the final 20 minutes, I caught myself checking the time.
04:44Which is never a good sign for an action movie.
04:49So should you watch it?
04:51I had say yes.
04:52But only if you go in expecting a fun, messy B-movie and not a masterpiece.
04:59If you enjoy over the top horror action mashup,
05:04and do not mind a script that doesn't fully come together,
05:08you will probably have a decent time.
