00:30April 6th in Tupelo, Mississippi. Like the inaugural 1994 Spring Stampede event, the show has a western theme with the
00:371997 edition heavily featuring the four horsemen in the event's promotional material. As a quick side note, there was no
00:44Spring Stampede in 1995 or 1996. There's also no Hollywood Hogan on this show, meaning there's no WCW Championship match,
00:53instead the show is main evented by a Diamond Dallas Page vs Randy Savage grudge match.
00:58There's also been a little confusion regarding the WCW Tag Team title match, Scott Hall hasn't been on WCW TV
01:06and he's booked in a title defense tonight along with Kevin Nash against Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner. Kevin Nash
01:12got angry on Nitro due to NWO members choosing a Dennis Rodman movie premiere over appearing on the show to
01:19fight WCW.
01:20Scott Hall got a bye ball from Big Sexy as Kevin explained that his tag partner was dealing with things
01:26more important than pro wrestling. In reality, Scott had checked himself into rehab, and WCW didn't come up with any
01:33kind of explanation other than he was missing in action.
01:36Scott Hall is not at Spring Stampede, and it's announced at the beginning of the show that Kevin will face
01:42both Steiners in a two on one match, and the tag titles will be on the line. The semi main
01:49tonight is a four corners match, the giant vs Lex Luger vs Booker T vs Stevie Ray, and the winner
01:55of the match will get a shot at Hollywood Hogan's World Championship.
02:02Our opening match features Ultimo Dragon taking on Rey Mysterio Jr., so Mr. WCW pay per view, Dean Malenko is
02:10not opening the card this time around, the Malenko vs Benoit match is a little later on. The match begins
02:16with your standard holds and locks and Dragon ends up hitting a body slam, the two go at it again
02:21and Mysterio applies a leg trap camel clutch, Dragon performs a wrist lock and Mysterio gets out with a headstand
02:28counter, the wrestlers show respect to each other afterwards and the crowd gives a round of applause. Dragon puts Rey
02:35down with his kick combo and he follows this up with a dropkick, the match goes to the mat again
02:40with Dragon in control, keeping the focus on Mysterio's left arm. The fans then get excited for Dragon's spinning backbreaker
02:47drop and Dragon follows up with a powerbomb catapult combination that looked excellent, Ultimo Dragon brings it back to basics
02:54momentarily with a sleeper hold but then he pulls
02:57throws off a running lagger bomb that I must have watched back 5 or 6 times. Spring stampede had a
03:03wonderful start here and this was commonplace at WCW pay per views, the opening match was always exciting. Mysterio then
03:10gets rocked with a tombstone pile driver and Dragon could have ended the match right here but he breaks his
03:16own pin, Bobby Heenan says this was a mistake. Another sleeper gets applied but Rey breaks out and we see
03:21a spinning wheel kick, Dragon replies with a clothesline
03:25before applying a muda lock and a surfboard, Rey just hasn't been able to get going here at all. The
03:31match goes to the outside where Rey throws his opponent into the guardrail, Rey then rushes into the ring to
03:37try and regroup a little but Dragon catches Mysterio with another sleeper, the crowd pops when Rey gets up and
03:43he applies a sleeper of his own before knocking Dragon out of the ring, and Rey then performs a springboard
03:49senton before we go to split screen.
03:52Let's just appreciate this layout and the random picture of the western bar taking up a third of the screen,
03:58what's going on here? Stagger Lee wants to get a word with Kevin Nash, apparently Big Sexy has a demand
04:04in regards to his 2 on 1 match later on, but it's 6 who pops his head out of the
04:09door. We can't hear what he says but the door gets slammed in Lee's face. Back in the ring, Dragon
04:14misses a middle rope crossbody, Rey tries to take advantage but he ends up getting drop kicked out of the
04:20ring.
04:20Dragon performs a plancha before the match gets back inside the ropes where Mysterio gets drop kicked out of a
04:26lion's salt. Dragon then pulls off a giant swing that makes both men a little dizzy, but Rey comes back
04:32with a cartwheel spinning hurricanrana, both guys then try to pin but neither competitor can get a 3 count.
04:38Dragon goes back in control with an enziguri, we then see the dragon steiner, but Rey keeps himself in the
04:44match by getting a foot on the ropes. The match comes to an end with Rey avoiding a tiger suplex,
04:50he then ducks a wheel kick, and Rey Mysterio wins the match with a springboard hurricanrana. A really good opening
04:56match here that had some excellent pacing, WCW continues its tradition of making opening matches must-see attractions, a good
05:04start to Spring Stampede.
05:09Lee Marshall tries to get a word with Kevin Nash again, Six again shows up at the door but this
05:15time Rick and Scott Steiner show up. Nash then appears as Scott and Rick get held back by Doug Dillinger
05:21and the boys, and Nash announces that he wants Nick Patrick as the referee tonight if he has to take
05:26on both Steiner brothers on PPV. Nash then spits on Scott, Scott punches a random guy holding him back,
05:32and Doug Dillinger decides he can't handle it and Steiner gets maced, Scott screams for Rick to help him but
05:39Rick is also getting held back, Scott ends up getting cuffed and he continues to scream for help, so we're
05:45gonna have to wait to see how this affects the tag team title match a little later in the evening.
05:49The commentary team do absolutely nothing but talk about this throughout the next couple of matches by the way, watch
05:55the TV title match a little later on and you'll notice that the action in the ring is totally ignored
06:00in favour of the Nash vs Steiner storyline. The Medusa vs Akira Hokoto match was up next and it wasn't
06:07bad at all, it's one of Medusa's better matches in recent times, it's around 5 minutes long, pretty standard for
06:13WCW women's matches, and it starts off with Akira in control but Medusa turning it around with a few punches
06:19in the corner that gets a great pop from the audience. After a bit of back and forth, Medusa finds
06:24herself
06:24at the ropes and Sonny Ono decides to slap Medusa around a little, Medusa kicks Ono away but this doesn't
06:31stop Sonny from going back at Medusa while we get to see the world's most oblivious referee. They fucked up
06:37the ending though, Medusa hits her German suplex, Sonny Ono jumps on the apron to stop the count, but the
06:43referee paid no attention to Akira's manager and Akira wasn't sure if she should kick out or not, have a
06:49look yourself.
06:54You can also hear the bell ringing but the match isn't over, Medusa kicks Ono off the apron and she
06:59goes to finish Akira off, but Luna Vachon shows up and she costs Medusa the match. I was beginning to
07:05worry that we wouldn't see Luna again after her debut on Nitro a few weeks ago, so it's good to
07:10see she's still here but it's not so good for Medusa. Akira Hokoto retains the women's championship at Spring Stampede.
07:20Lord Steven Regal vs Prince Ayakea was up next for the TV title. We have established on Reliving the War
07:26that the prince really wasn't ready to get heavily showcased on TV, his recent pay-per-view matches with Rey
07:32Mysterio weren't great and his most recent Nitro match against Leparka was bad too, but this match here with Lord
07:38Steven Regal was actually pretty solid and that's because Regal forced the prince to work at Regal's pace. Prince Ayakea
07:45wasn't given many opportunities to screw things up thanks to Regal keeping things
07:49grounded with a more straight-laced style of wrestling and it done wonders for Ayakea. Tony Schiavone announced at the
07:55start of the match that Scott Steiner has been arrested, and this means Nash only has to face Rick Steiner
08:01tonight but the tag titles are still on the line. As mentioned earlier, this is all the commentary team talk
08:07about throughout this match. We get our standard wrist locks and head locks at the beginning of the bout, but
08:12if you plan on watching this back, pay attention to how much Regal gets out of these standard holds.
08:18Ayakea manages to bring it to the mat with a headlock takedown, Regal gets to his feet, he gets in
08:23a cheap shot when Ayakea releases the headlock, and Regal brings his leg down over Ayakea's head, remembering to play
08:30up to the crowd afterwards and again getting the most out of the simplest things.
08:35Ayakea gets thrown out of the ring and he comes back in with a springboard crossbody, Regal loses a test
08:40of strength but he bridges out and Regal decides to poke Ayakea in the eye afterwards.
08:45He says it was an open palm strike, and the referee buys it. His lordship almost caves in Prince Ayakea's
08:51back with a hard forearm shot, and he tries to end it with a full Nelson submission but Prince stays
08:57in the match. The TV champion tries to steal a victory with a sunset flip but Regal punches him in
09:02the face and the match continues. Big European uppercuts from Regal get answered with a few chops from the prince,
09:08Regal is forced into the corner where he begs for mercy and the prince backs off.
09:12This was a mistake, Regal obviously doesn't give Ayakea the same courtesy when the referee calls for a break in
09:19the opposite corner, and check out this spot here, this sums up the match so well in almost a meta
09:26sense.
09:26The prince tries a crossbody and Regal just walks away from it, resulting in Prince's high risk offense not paying
09:33off, and showing that wrestling smart and keeping things straightforward would probably be a better strategy for the TV champion.
09:40And guess what, keeping it simple leads to Prince Ayakea winning the match, a back body drop gets followed up
09:47with a few chops, Regal goes for a schoolboy pin but the prince twists out of it and he pins
09:52Regal for the three count.
09:53I think if you watched this match without watching Nitro and without understanding where Prince Ayakea was, you'd probably write
10:00it off as a pretty average encounter and indeed, it was pretty average on the grand scheme of things, but
10:07those who saw how bad Ayakea was in previous matches would see what the plan was during this encounter at
10:13Spring Stampede.
10:14Regal got a better match out of Prince Ayakea here and he done that by leading a more deliberate style
10:19of match, with a focus on the fundamentals.
10:22Again, it wasn't a great match, but for Prince Ayakea, it was his best TV title match to date.
10:28Just like on Monday Nitro when Chris Jericho defeated Regal, his lordship goes on the attack after the bell,
10:34only this time, no one comes out to help Prince Ayakea.
10:40Ric Flair comes out to cut a promo and this time, Flair has a few announcements.
10:45First of all, the Nature Boy is stepping back into the ring.
10:48On May 18th, at WCW Slamboree, Ric Flair will have his first match since September of 1996.
10:55Flair then says that Kevin Green is coming back to WCW and Green has agreed to team up with the
11:00Nature Boy.
11:01Bit odd seeing as Steve McMichael had some issues with Green last time around, but nonetheless,
11:06Flair calls out Hulk Hogan next, and he challenges Hogan and other members of the NWO to step into the
11:12ring at Slamboree.
11:14Flair doesn't make it exactly clear what kind of challenge this is,
11:18not sure if it's a tag match or a 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 match that also includes
11:23the 4 horsemen,
11:24but Flair is back and he's wrestling on next month's pay-per-view.
11:27Speaking of the horsemen, Double J and Steve Mongo McMichael took on the public enemy next,
11:33and the story was the exact same as always.
11:36I think this was probably, what, the third or fourth time when it looked like Double J and Mongo had
11:41sorted out their differences,
11:43even Big Steve done the Fargo strut showing he and Jeff had maybe set aside their problems
11:48for the betterment of the horsemen.
11:50Johnny Grunge tried to put Debra through a table and Double J had to come to her rescue,
11:54Grunge ended up putting himself through the table as Mongo and Rock battled on the entranceway,
12:00all was looking good until Debra left the magical briefcase on the ring apron,
12:05and Rocko Rock took it for himself.
12:07Double J applies a figure 4, he then gets whacked with the Halliburton,
12:11and the horsemen take another loss.
12:13I'm sure we'll hear all about it again tomorrow night on WCW Nitro,
12:18but this is just the same thing we see time and time again with Double J and Mongo McMichael.
12:24A common complaint with modern wrestling is that storylines are too short,
12:28and longer angles of the past were much better.
12:31That may be the case, but there were also some absolutely horrible storylines
12:35that lasted way longer than what they should have back in the 90s too.
12:39The problems with the horsemen during late 96 and 97 is a prime example.
12:48Mean Gene interviews Harlem Heat next,
12:50and you'll notice they're wearing different colours tonight,
12:52and that's because they aren't teaming up at Spring Stampede.
12:55They're in a four corners match with the winner getting a world title shot.
12:59Now, we all know what happens here,
13:02Booker says something he shouldn't have.
13:04If you watch this on the network after the Peacock purchase,
13:06you get to hear the Turner home video edit,
13:09which, by the way, was pretty well done.
13:16The network version before the Peacock purchase has the unedited audio,
13:20and I can't play it here,
13:21the video will get flagged I'm sure,
13:24but you know what happens.
13:25Booker T has stated quite a few times
13:27that this was one of the lowest points of his career,
13:30but, well, what's done is done, you know,
13:32what can you do?
13:33Booker's reaction to his slip-up though is priceless,
13:37and so is sister Sherry's.
13:39She tried to comfort Booker and tell him it's okay,
13:41but Booker is clearly distraught.
13:44It's a legendary botch for sure,
13:46but you do feel bad for Booker a little,
13:48and I'm sure it played on his mind
13:49throughout the remainder of the show.
13:51The thing is,
13:52verbal slip-up aside,
13:54the promo was actually pretty good.
13:56Sherry started it off by saying
13:58Harlem Heat will divide and conquer tonight,
14:00echoing her statement on Monday Nitro.
14:02Booker T said this was all about
14:04Harlem Heat finally getting a chance to get the world title,
14:07and Stevie Ray says
14:08The Giant and Lex Luger are in the way
14:10of Harlem Heat getting a shot at Hulk Hogan's belt.
14:14Booker T then says
14:15that too many people have been looking over the heat,
14:17but the critics will be silenced tonight.
14:20What's interesting though is the fact
14:22that neither Booker nor Stevie talked about
14:24the possibility of wrestling each other
14:26in this Four Corners match,
14:27but yeah,
14:28everyone remembers the botch
14:30and the immediate reactions of Booker and Sherry afterwards.
14:33Stevie Ray's reaction?
14:35Well, apparently Stevie didn't pay attention
14:37and he didn't hear the slip-up.
14:38He was too busy thinking about what he was going to say
14:41when it was his turn to talk.
14:46Chris Benoit gets a shot at Dean Malenko's US Championship next,
14:50both Chris and Dean said they respect each other on Nitro,
14:53and Malenko wanted to give Chris a chance to win a singles championship.
14:57Both guys though have other feuds going on,
15:00Benoit and Kevin Sullivan have a rivalry that's been lasting forever,
15:03while Dean Malenko has been feuding with Eddie Guerrero,
15:06a guy who Dean has been trying to expose for what he truly is,
15:10a jealous cheater, according to Dean.
15:13Now, in comparison to Dean's other pay-per-view matches in 1997
15:16and the ones we've just saw,
15:18this one plays out very differently
15:20and it shows how versatile the Iceman truly was.
15:23It starts off with your standard holds and locks
15:26but eventually it breaks down into both men trying to wear each other down.
15:30There's no quick pin attempts,
15:31nor highly innovative holds or counters.
15:34It's all about who can go the longest
15:35and who can stay on their opponent and not stop.
15:38Almost a battle to see who has the better stamina.
15:42It's a great match too,
15:43Malenko works over the knee and leg early in the bout
15:45but Benoit fires back with a stiff shoulder block
15:48that almost floors Chris too.
15:50Dean comes back with a wrist lock
15:52but Benoit counters with a top wrist lock
15:54where he can apply much of his upper body weight onto Malenko.
15:57Malenko gets out with a body slam
15:59and he sells the wrist and arm afterwards.
16:01Benoit bridges during a test of strength
16:04and Malenko tries to bring Chris down
16:05by jumping on the crippler but Chris stays put.
16:08Benoit then gets to his feet,
16:10another wrist lock gets applied
16:11and Malenko gets stretched out on the mat.
16:14A slew of ground submissions by Chris Benoit follows
16:17where the neck and back is targeted,
16:19Malenko eventually stops the onslaught with a back suplex,
16:23Chris makes Dean pay with a few hard chops
16:25and I hope this comes across on YouTube
16:27because you can see the sweat getting knocked off Dean's chest.
16:31These are some hard shots.
16:33Dean isn't one to stand around and take punishment though,
16:36he lays the boots into the crippler
16:37and we can see that Chris has cut his hand open too.
16:40Dean then brings it back to the mat with an STF
16:43followed by a camel clutch,
16:44Chris then gets launched into the ropes
16:46and Dean applies a short arm scissors
16:48from an arm drag takedown.
16:50Chris gets out by lifting the ice man up in the air
16:52while the hold is still applied
16:54and Dean gets slammed to the mat.
16:56We see another back suplex from Chris Benoit
16:59and he thinks this is enough to end the match
17:01but Dean kicks out of the pin attempt,
17:03an abdominal stretch gets applied next
17:05and it stays in for an extended period of time.
17:08Dean fights out eventually, but a kick to the head
17:10from Chris Benoit puts Dean back on the canvas.
17:13Chris tries choking Malenko with the ropes
17:15and he lands a neckbreaker,
17:17again he thinks this is enough to end the bout,
17:19but Malenko gets a foot on the ropes.
17:21Dean is taking quite a beating here,
17:23but he's still going strong.
17:25Chris remains relentless,
17:26the sound of his knife-edge chops echo throughout the arena,
17:30but Malenko fires back with a running clothesline
17:32in the opposite corner.
17:34Dean goes for a suplex next,
17:35but Chris counters with an inverted suplex
17:37that gets a great reaction from the crowd.
17:40This is when the match ends unfortunately
17:42and it's due to interference.
17:45First of all, Jacqueline comes down
17:47and she begins fighting with woman.
17:49Jimmy Hart then tries to steal the US title
17:51and this leads to an injured Eddie Guerrero coming out.
17:54Eddie tries to get the belt back
17:56and in the middle of the chaos,
17:57Benoit gets suplexed from the ring to the outside.
18:01Arn Anderson then makes his way down to the ring
18:03and he takes out Dean Malenko,
18:04and then Kevin Sullivan shows up.
18:07In a repeat of Monday Nitro,
18:09Double A allows Sullivan to pass him.
18:11This leads to Sullivan smacking Benoit with a kendo stick.
18:15Sullivan then gets taken out
18:16and he falls on Eddie Guerrero,
18:18and all this chaos leads to Randy Anderson throwing the match out.
18:22Jimmy Hart, Jackie, and Kevin Sullivan
18:24then put the belt on Eddie's shoulder.
18:26He's brought back up the entranceway
18:27and he protests that he doesn't want the belt,
18:30but the question here is,
18:32is this all a setup
18:33and is Eddie just tricking everyone while acting innocent?
18:37The finish lets this one down a little,
18:39this was an absolute war inside the ropes
18:42and five people running down to interfere
18:45didn't do the match any favours.
18:47We know Anderson wanted his rivalry with Sullivan
18:50to be water under the bridge,
18:52but in a roundabout way,
18:53Anderson just cost Benoit the US title.
18:56Malenko talks to Chris afterwards,
18:58saying,
18:59he was not supposed to be here.
19:01And we don't know if Malenko was referring to Guerrero,
19:04Anderson, or Sullivan,
19:06but either way,
19:07there's mutual respect shown between the two competitors.
19:10It's a shame the match ended the way it did,
19:13but don't let it stop you from watching.
19:15This is still a highly recommended matchup.
19:22Kevin Nash comes out for his match against Rick Steiner
19:25and he's brought Nick Patrick,
19:27Ted DiBiase in six along with him,
19:29so you know exactly what's going to happen in this one.
19:32Rick tries attacking Nash right at the opening bell,
19:35but the big man overpowers his opponent.
19:37Rick takes a clothesline in the corner,
19:39Big Sexy leads in a few back elbows,
19:41but Rick gets an opening at the opposite side of the ring,
19:44Nash takes a big boot followed by a Steiner line.
19:47A belly-to-belly suplex follows,
19:49and there was just about enough rotation here
19:51to land the move clean.
19:53Nash is under the rope slightly,
19:54and this means Rick has to break his follow-up in attempt.
19:58We see Rick's scoop power slam next,
20:00and any of these power moves of Rick Steiner
20:02are going to look impressive when Nash takes them.
20:05This is no exception.
20:07The NWO then come into play
20:08when Six holds down the top rope
20:10and Steiner tumbles to the outside.
20:12Patrick has a conversation with Nash
20:14as Six lays in the kicks on the outside.
20:16Nash throws Rick back into the ring,
20:18and the dog-faced gremlin takes a sidewalk slam.
20:21Steiner then gets choked on the ropes
20:23and Ted DiBiase gets in a cheap shot.
20:25This is turning into another slaughter by the NWO
20:28as Kevin Nash floors Rick with a big boot.
20:31Nash signals for the end,
20:33he hits a jackknife,
20:34but Rick manages to kick out at two,
20:36surprisingly,
20:37and Rick really should have stayed down.
20:39Things get pretty bad for the Steiner brother next
20:42as Nash begins targeting Rick's injured ear.
20:44In storyline, Rick had a busted eardrum.
20:47Still, Rick manages to hit a low blow
20:49and he hits his bulldog from the middle rope,
20:52but Nash kicks out at two.
20:53The commentators say this was a slow count from Patrick,
20:56by the way,
20:57but it absolutely wasn't.
20:59Nash then takes a few more clotheslines,
21:01but Six distracts Steiner long enough
21:02for Kevin to hit Rick with a clothesline of his own.
21:05Six then tries to remove the turnbuckle padding,
21:08he has a little trouble,
21:09so Ted DiBiase lends a helping hand.
21:11In Kevin, Nash then performs snake eyes on Rick,
21:14again targeting the side of the head and the injured ear.
21:17Nash does this twice,
21:19and Ted DiBiase ends up showing sympathy for Rick
21:22and he tries to reason with Kevin that that's enough.
21:25Nash tells DiBiase that he's supposed to be NWO,
21:28and Big Sexy will tell DiBiase when enough's enough.
21:31Kevin does it again,
21:33and DiBiase decides he's going to leave the ringside area.
21:36This was all playing off the stuff on Nitro
21:38with certain NWO members not showing up.
21:41DiBiase wasn't all Nitro,
21:42and so Kevin doesn't seem to care too much
21:45about what DiBiase has to say,
21:46and he doesn't care about DiBiase leaving the arena.
21:50Steiner gets dropped one more time,
21:52we see another jackknife.
21:54Nick Patrick hesitates making the count,
21:56but Nash forces the referee to do his job.
21:59Big Sexy picks up the win at Spring Stampede 1997.
22:03While not a match you'd call overly competitive,
22:06this one helped Kevin Nash stand out among a sea of NWO members,
22:10and the NWO having problems is way more refreshing
22:13than the horsemen having problems.
22:15The issue here though is that this could easily turn out
22:18to be a repeat of the four horsemen stuff,
22:21and that's something we just don't want to see.
22:23Still, Kevin came across like a real bully here,
22:27one of the more dominant members of the NWO
22:30and a guy who wasn't prepared to take shit
22:32from neither his friends or his enemies.
22:35Not a great match,
22:36but I'm liking this no-nonsense version of Kevin Nash.
22:43The Giant and Lex Luger get interviewed
22:45before the Four Corners match,
22:47and the Giant says this was all Hulk Hogan's plan.
22:50He's trying to turn brother against brother
22:52and friend against friend.
22:54Giant says he and Luger are a team,
22:56but Giant understands that whoever wins this thing,
22:58they deserve the title shot,
23:00no matter if it's Luger, Booker, Stevie, or himself.
23:04Lex says WCW is here to claim what's theirs,
23:08this is a shot at Hollywood Hogan,
23:10and a shot to bring the new world order down.
23:13Harlem Heat, The Giant, and Luger are going to wrestle tonight,
23:16but the end goal is to bring the championship back to WCW
23:19and restore prestige to world championship wrestling.
23:23So, in short, Team Giant Package here
23:26are happy enough to fight each other
23:27to get a chance at Hollywood Hogan.
23:29Harlem Heat make their entrance together,
23:32as does Luger and The Giant.
23:34This one is every man for himself,
23:36you can tag out at any time,
23:38and you can tag in whoever you want.
23:40The first man to score a pinfall or submission
23:42will win the match.
23:44Lex Luger and Booker T start this one off,
23:46and you're just watching to see
23:47if Harlem Heat will square off against each other,
23:49or if Luger and The Giant will fight each other,
23:52and you know what's going to happen eventually,
23:53but the competitors make us wait it out.
23:56Luger floors Booker with a clothesline,
23:58and a press slam follows.
23:59Booker fights back a little,
24:01but when Luger hits another clothesline,
24:03Booker decides to tag out,
24:05and we see Harlem Heat working together.
24:07This gets followed up with Luger and The Giant
24:09working as a team in the opposite corner also,
24:12and then The Giant gets officially tagged in,
24:14and we have The Big Man vs Stevie Ray for a little.
24:17Stevie shows no fear by going straight after The Giant,
24:20but fuck me, Stevie takes another clothesline,
24:24and another one afterwards.
24:25There's a lot of clotheslines in this match.
24:27Booker gets in the ring to try and help Stevie,
24:29but he takes a press slam for his trouble,
24:32and then Booker and Stevie argue on the outside a little,
24:35setting up their inevitable fight a little later in the match.
24:39Before we get there though,
24:40Stevie Ray tags in The Giant,
24:42meaning Giant Package is gonna explode tonight at Spring Stampede.
24:46Their fight doesn't last long,
24:48they lock up,
24:48Luger tries to body slam his partner,
24:50but The Giant falls on top of Lex,
24:53Luger kicks out,
24:54and then Stevie Ray and Booker T get tagged in.
24:56This, I feel,
24:58is way more interesting than The Giant and Luger having to fight,
25:01and Harlem Heat take their time in building up a little anticipation.
25:05The two are evenly matched as they go through a wrist lock and head lock routine,
25:09a drop down leapfrog sequence then ends with the brothers showing each other a little respect,
25:14and the crowd boos as it looks like Booker and Stevie aren't gonna fight each other here,
25:19Booker tags in Lex Luger and what a shame this was.
25:23Neither team fight with each other for the remainder of the match,
25:26and it pretty much turns into a normal tag team match after this.
25:30Not much point going into further detail, let's just skip to the end.
25:34Luger takes a beating for the rest of the bout and he needs to tag out.
25:37The Giant gets tagged in and he and Stevie Ray end up the legal men.
25:42Giant has the match won,
25:43all he needs to do is put Stevie away with a chokeslam,
25:46but he tags Luger back in,
25:48completely gifting the total package with an easy win.
25:52Luger applies the rack,
25:53and Luger wins a title shot against Hulk Hogan.
25:56I found this one pretty disappointing,
25:58there wasn't enough physicality between teammates,
26:01and I know the Luger vs Hogan match is much more appealing than another Giant vs Hogan match,
26:06but it didn't really make sense for the Giant to give up a title shot and a chance to get
26:10his hands on Hogan again.
26:12Still, Luger is one of the most over WCW superstars of this time period,
26:17and fans can now look forward to Lex getting a shot at the gold.
26:24The DDP vs Randy Savage feud started the night after Super Brawl.
26:29Randy Savage, the newest member of the New World Order at the time,
26:32attacked Dallas from behind,
26:34and when Dallas said he was coming after Randy,
26:37the macho man treated DDP like he was a nobody.
26:40Savage would say that Dallas wasn't a threat to him,
26:43and so Randy just went on about his business.
26:46Paige wouldn't stop though,
26:47he was determined to get revenge on Randy.
26:50At WCW Uncensored, Randy and Liz revealed to wrestling fans that Kimberly was Dallas' wife,
26:56and Kimberly had also done a photo shoot for an adult magazine.
27:00Dallas wasn't happy that Randy was taking personal shots,
27:03but things got way worse when Kimberly walked out,
27:06completely covered in spray paint.
27:08It was clear the NWO got to her.
27:11Randy attacked Paige again at Uncensored,
27:13and Kimberly was spray painted again when she tried to protect her husband.
27:16In the next night on Monday Nitro,
27:19Paige agreed to wrestle Dallas at Spring Stampede.
27:22This match was a big deal for DDP,
27:24it was his first major one-on-one singles main event on pay-per-view,
27:29so the pressure was high.
27:30It's truly a make-or-break bout for the master of the diamond cutter.
27:34Not counting the messy, uncensored, multi-man main event,
27:37this is also Savage's first main event since Halloween Havoc last year.
27:42DDP cut a promo before the match where he said,
27:45a man has to stand up for what really matters,
27:47and what matters to DDP is his wife.
27:50Kimberly then appears and she says she prefers Dallas to keep a positive attitude about everything,
27:55but tonight, the rage of DDP is what will win him the match.
28:04Before the bout begins, Savage says this isn't DDP's big day,
28:08it's his last day on the planet.
28:11The crowd chants DDP as Randy gets in the ring,
28:13but he quickly leaves again when Paige comes at him.
28:16Randy then goes to walk back up the entranceway,
28:18but this was all done to trick DDP into following him.
28:21Randy tries to take advantage, but he gets smashed into the guardrail.
28:25When the match gets back in the ring,
28:27Dallas again has to stop Randy from running away.
28:30Dallas goes for his high-angle atomic drop,
28:32but he overshoots it,
28:34and well, it doesn't look too hot,
28:35but still a decent enough recovery.
28:38Dallas tries to end it with a diamond cutter,
28:40but Randy holds onto the ropes.
28:42DDP cracks his head on the mat,
28:43and Savage snaps DDP's neck across the top rope,
28:46resulting in Paige falling out of the ring.
28:48The two men end up fighting through the crowd,
28:50and they make it all the way up to the arena doors.
28:53Randy throws Dallas out,
28:55and he lifts up a trash can,
28:56but it's the macho man who ends up getting hit on the head.
28:59Randy ends up taking two trash can shots,
29:02and he gets choked with some cables
29:03before the competitors get back to the ringside area.
29:06Savage uses Kimberly as a shield,
29:08and Liz tries to hit Paige from behind.
29:11This distracts Dallas long enough for Randy to get in a cheap shot.
29:15From here, Randy destroys Paige on the outside.
29:18We see his double axe handle from the top rope to the outside,
29:21and Paige gets rammed into the ring steps,
29:23and when Randy and Dallas get back in the ring,
29:26the macho man tries to pick up a cheap victory,
29:28but DDP still kicks out.
29:30Savage tells Michael Buffer to get off his seat,
29:32and Randy takes the chair.
29:34Paige takes a shot across the back,
29:36and Mark Curtis ends up taking the chair away from Savage.
29:39Undeterred, Randy goes back to the outside,
29:41and he doesn't only take Dave Penzer's chair,
29:44but he also gives Dave a hard smack across the face.
29:50Savage also kicks Dave right in the head before getting back in the ring,
29:54but Dallas takes the chair,
29:55and he manages to push it in Randy's face.
29:58Randy gets up before Paige,
30:00and Dallas takes a beating in the corner.
30:02Paige momentarily turns it around,
30:04and Savage takes a ton of right hands,
30:06but a macho man clothesline completely destroys Dallas,
30:10and it looks like Randy has Paige's number tonight,
30:13maybe Dallas was in over his head.
30:16Randy toys around with Paige a little,
30:18but he gets too confident.
30:20Paige hits a clothesline of his own,
30:22but once again, Randy gets up before Dallas.
30:25Paige takes a body slam,
30:26a kick to the midsection,
30:28another two body slams,
30:29Paige is struggling to get back into this match,
30:32and Randy is now getting a little more vicious.
30:34The macho man goes to the outside,
30:36and he grabs the ring bell,
30:38Savage goes to the top rope to end the match,
30:40but Kimberly takes the ring bell away from Macho.
30:43Randy decides he's gonna hit a diving elbow instead,
30:46but Paige gets the feed up,
30:47and Randy gets clocked.
30:49This could be DDP's last chance,
30:51he signals for the diamond cutter,
30:53Paige tries to end it,
30:54but Savage counters into the backslide position,
30:57and he then hits DDP with a low blow.
30:59Dallas kicks out of the follow-up pin attempt,
31:02and Savage just snaps.
31:03He slaps our favourite referee Mark Curtis across the face,
31:07he hits the referee with a pile driver,
31:10he takes Mark's belt,
31:11and he begins whipping the poor guy.
31:13Savage has totally lost it.
31:15Mark gets tossed out of the ring,
31:17Savage then hits the diving elbow on DDP,
31:20but of course,
31:21there's no referee to end the match.
31:23Here comes Nick Patrick to put an end to this massacre.
31:26Patrick hugs the macho man,
31:28Macho goes for another body slam,
31:30but Paige counters with a diamond cutter,
31:32and the roof comes off the arena.
31:34The commentators wonder if Patrick will make the three count,
31:37and he does.
31:38Diamond Dallas Paige defeats Randy Savage to end the show.
31:42Kevin Nash immediately hits the ring,
31:44and he grabs Patrick by the throat while checking on Savage,
31:47Eric Bischoff and the New World Order then walk down to the ring,
31:51and Bischoff doesn't look too happy with Nick Patrick for making the three count.
31:54Kevin Nash hits a jackknife on Patrick,
31:57and Randy Savage takes out DDP,
31:59leaving Kimberly all alone in the ring.
32:02Savage grabs DDP's wife,
32:04and surprisingly,
32:06Eric Bischoff tries to stop the macho man.
32:08Savage ends up shoving Eric down to the mat,
32:11Eric gets up,
32:12and he pushes the macho man,
32:13and Randy knocks Eric down with a right hand before the ANWO rush into the ring
32:18to break things up.
32:20This right here is how Spring Stampede ended.
32:26It was Randy Savage who famously said on this evening,
32:30I think I want to take the diamond cutter tonight,
32:33when the match finish was being discussed backstage.
32:36Savage wanted to give Paige the win at Spring Stampede
32:39even though he didn't have to,
32:41nor did he need to,
32:43but in losing,
32:44he helped elevate Dallas even further,
32:46and it was a gesture that Dallas still remembers fondly to this day.

32:59It was a great main event though,

33:05It's a very meaningful bout in terms of creating an even bigger star out of Dallas,

33:22and Paige vs. Savage matches being the highlights.
