JP and BMitch give out their week one grades for each position group on the Commanders offense! Were they too optimistic, harsh, or just right?

00:00So much has been made about pro football focus and people grading out games.
00:04And I don't always agree with the grades.
00:07And I think so much of this is just subjective that, B, you and I watched every snap of that
00:14game Sunday.
00:15And I think this is a good idea from Stallion, that we can provide our own grades of how we
00:19think players and position groups perform.
00:21I'm not going to go player by player.
00:23I think we go position groups.
00:24Yeah, that's it.
00:25But, um, and I'm curious, kind of, where do you want to start?
00:31O or D?
00:34Let's go with, uh, let's go with offense first.
00:36Okay.
00:37Um, let's start with the running backs.
00:39Collectively, the running backs carried the ball 27 times for 101 yards, one touchdown, 3.75 yards per pop.
00:47I thought Bill was impressive.
00:49Yeah.
00:50I, Katron, they got in later in the game.
00:53I thought he was fine.
00:57Yeah.
00:58Yeah.
00:58Katron ran four for 16.
01:00Um, Rashad white was probably the least impressive to me.
01:04Seven for 22, little over three per carry.
01:07Um, white also had two catches for five yards.
01:11I don't know.
01:13I thought white looked better in camp than what I saw Sunday, but overall, I thought Bill finished 16 for
01:2063, just under four carry.
01:22There were a few plays Zach bonds in elite player, right?
01:26I mean, he's, I think he's a two-time all pro when Bill had his 14 yard, 11 yard run.
01:32I want to say he was a shoestring away from breaking it.
01:35Yeah.

01:36Um, which kind of would have given Washington an explosive that they largely didn't have.
01:41To me, the running backs in this game were pretty good against a very good defense.
01:48And I was impressed.
01:50Sometimes the run game is not about explosives.
01:56It's about a commitment to it that the defense has to respect.
02:00And I thought I was impressed by particularly Bill's ability to get tough yards up the middle against that Eagles
02:07defensive front.
02:08Yeah.
02:09I was impressed with all that.
02:10But like the thing for me is I don't really care about the yards per carry when it's when you're
02:15playing against a team like the Eagles with those guys up front.
02:18You're not going to have seven, eight yards to carry.
02:20And if you get anywhere close to four, see, my thing is that being 3.7 yards to carry, that's
02:267.4 yards in two plays.
02:28So you should have third and short.
02:30So in my eyes, they were trending to that B, B minus.
02:35But with the fumble, that drops it to a C to me.
02:38Okay.
02:39Because I also felt where the running backs with some box and chips and stuff were involved with that part
02:47of the game as well.
02:48They didn't go out there and just like, you know, cough it up.
02:52But that one play and it was perfect, a perfect punch.
02:56You still have to put that second hand on the ball.
02:58I think that's a great point because to your point about YPC, about yards per carry, coaches care more about
03:06complementary football and the run game being a vehicle to let the defense get some rest.
03:13Because the pass game can be, but often it cannot be.
03:17But you get an incomplete pass, clock stops, you go three and out, like it can happen fast, right?
03:22And I think the run game did a good job of being a vehicle towards complementary football.
03:28You can't put the ball on the ground, period.
03:30They got Josh Connerly bailed him out there.
03:33Yeah, he bailed him out.
03:34And think about it.
03:35You also, later on when you give plays for the offensive line, that comes into play because he was heads
03:42up.
03:42He was ready for that.
03:43I'll go C+.
03:45I think you're pretty dead on.
03:47We mentioned Connerly.
03:48Why don't we do the O-line here?
03:49I thought Cosme was phenomenal.
03:51I thought all the consolation.
03:53Cosme was so great that Baldy did a whole rundown of it.
03:55How cool was that?
03:56And he was kicking Jordan's butt.
03:58Yeah, dude.
03:58That is hard to do.
04:01Connerly, to me, still struggles against Bull Rush, just straight strength stuff in the pass game.
04:07But he's really athletic in the run game.
04:09And that's just dropping his butt.
04:11When you have that, like normally when they start to Bull Rush, he's up a little bit.
04:15If you just anchor it, because you watch how Cosme does it.
04:18Cosme would be moving backwards and then he just, he sits.
04:22And they can't move him anymore.
04:24And I think Connerly is going to learn that.
04:27I thought for the amount of pixels and words and consternation that surrounded the center position and Nick Allegretti, I
04:37think he outperformed that.
04:39If you want to scream about the two-point conversion and you thought Allegretti missed the block there, I'm not
04:45sure.
04:45I think Ajomo just made an incredible play.
04:47I think Chris Paul actually missed his block on the second level on Jahad Campbell, who would have blown that
04:52play up even if Ajomo didn't make the play.
04:56I thought Coleman, now the pressure nerds are going to tell me Coleman gave up the most pressures in the
05:01NFL.
05:01I believe he had nine pressures for the game.
05:04I thought particularly in the first half, a lot of those pressures were late and a lot of those pressures
05:09were a result of an elite defensive back room that Philadelphia had.
05:14When the pressures come after 3.94 seconds, that's not on that tackle.
05:20He's not supposed to hold a block that long.
05:23Ball has to be gone.
05:24Jaden was sacked once in this game.
05:26Some of that's a credit to Jaden's ability to, true.
05:29And he let it fly, but the whole thing about it is, he was sacked one time.
05:35He wasn't sacked or hit crazy 10, 15 times.
05:39No.
05:39You know?
05:40So, I think Coleman played well.
05:42O-line for me, probably a C plus, B minus, something like that.
05:48Where are you?
05:49I'm right there.
05:49I give him a B minus because the fact that he was up, they were able to run the ball
05:56efficiently, effectively.
05:58I would say it like that, not as efficient as you want it to be.
06:01But then, I don't think Jaden, as the game went on, had as many problems as he did early on.
06:07Let's go to the tight end room.
06:09All four were active.
06:10All four played in this game.
06:12Let me check the snap counts of the offensive line.
06:15Of the tight ends, rather.
06:17Obviously, how about the strength Chig showed when it was just like a little flare to the sideline and the
06:24Eagles DB or linebacker, whoever it was, had him wrapped up but couldn't bring him down.
06:28They were just kind of spinning their way to the sideline.
06:31I just thought that was kind of funny.
06:34Obviously, John Bates had, you didn't get a lot of offensive production from the tight ends.
06:40Okonkwo led them with 39 snaps, 56% of the snaps.
06:44He got hurt.
06:45He comes out.
06:46John Bates was next 34% 34 snaps, 49%.
06:50Senate had 18 snaps, 26%.
06:54Yankov had two offensive snaps, 3%.
06:57Not a ton of offensive production.
07:00Okonkwo had two catches for 16 yards.
07:03Bates had two catches for 13 yards.
07:06How'd you feel about the tight end group?
07:08Nah.

07:13If Bates had scored on the two-pointer, we'd feel different.

07:25The wide receiver group, I thought, obviously, Terry had a disappointing afternoon.

07:34Terry really wasn't open much in this thing.
07:37And I do think all the coverage dedicated to Terry opened things up for Antonio Williams.
07:42The rookie was good.
07:44Four catches for 64 yards.
07:46Had the longest play of the day for Washington's offense.
07:49A 33-yard reception from Jaden Daniels.
07:51The rookie also had a touchdown.
07:53I haven't told you this.
07:55Someone we both know.
07:56A friend of mine that you know that loves to talk-ish.
08:00Not scared to put in real bets, right?
08:04I got to tell you this bet he had in.
08:06And how sick to your stomach would you be?
08:08This is somebody with means, okay?
08:10So when he puts a bet in that he likes, he's going to put in a bet that he likes.
08:15He had 300 bucks on Antonio Williams at plus 11,000 to score two touchdowns.
08:23300 would have won him $33,000.
08:26And Antonio Williams went down at the one-inch line.
08:30And it looked like a touchdown first.
08:33I mean, he was inches away from a 33K payday.

08:37With that, how would you sleep at night with that, Jeff?

08:41Just laying all over the bed, just laying on top of him.
08:45So I thought, Terry, it was a quiet day, but I think that opened things up for the Rook.
08:50See, that's the thing about it.
08:51It's going to be games like that where people are not going to let him.
08:55Santana was telling a story about there was a game where he got a game ball.
08:59He didn't catch a pass.
09:01Because they knew they were trying to take him out of the game, and he did his job,
09:04and everybody else had an opportunity to go one-on-one.
09:07And they performed.
09:09So just sometimes when you're out there and you are the focus of the defense,
09:14you got to still run your routes and do everything the same way.
09:17But if they got two, three people watching you, somebody else is cooking them.
09:20Well, and that's a credit to Terry, too.
09:22Because there are receivers in the NFL that if they're not getting the ball, start pouting.
09:28Don't run the route.
09:29Like, even if – I wouldn't say Terry was a decoy in this thing.
09:32He was just getting really well covered.
09:34But he still is going to the mat every play.
09:38Hell, yeah.
09:39McLaurin, two for 14.
09:40Antonio Williams, four for 64.
09:42Deami Brown, they did take the one deep shot to him.
09:44They didn't connect.
09:45Two targets, no catches.
09:47Jalen Lane, one target, one catch for four yards.
09:50Steph Diggs, targeted nine times in this thing.
09:54Had four catches, 55 yards.
09:56Had the touchdown, obviously.
09:57Had the penalty, obviously.
09:59Also had some drops.
10:01Yeah.
10:01I think Diggs showed you flashes of why there was so much excitement around him.
10:05But between the penalty and the drops, not his best day.
10:09Where do you have the receiver group overall be?
10:12Overall, receiver group to me, I'm still around C plus, B minus.

10:17This is one of those games where you didn't win it.
10:20And as much as you can be happy about them performing, fighting, and things like that,
10:25it comes back to, you'll see the grades are always right in the middle right now.

10:30Because that's about where they're in.

10:31It shows you like it's more of an average day.
10:33I got him at a B minus because I was really encouraged by Antonio Williams.
10:37Like, his, when I first started seeing his slipperiness was in OTAs.
10:43And I said repeatedly then, I want to see it in camp once pads are on and there's real press
10:48coverage at the line of scrimmage.
10:50He's continued to show that throughout August and now into September.
10:53What do you want me to write on the card here?
10:56C plus or B minus?
10:58Uh, I'm going to stay with the C plus.

11:03Um, finally, the quarterback position.
11:06Jaden Daniels in this game was 18 of 34.
11:10The completion percentage is kind of low.
11:12He also threw the ball away five or six times, I would say, which I point to as a positive.
11:17Oh, yeah.
11:17I mean, that's maturation for a young man that in his first two years in the league, always tried to
11:21make a play.
11:22Always tried to make a play, rather.
11:23Excuse me.
11:24Um, first half was pretty ugly.
11:26Probably six of 16 for 43 yards.
11:28If you just look at the fourth quarter, you would see, I, in my opinion, room for real encouragement, nine
11:34of 11 for a hundred yards with two touchdowns.
11:36Finished the day with a buck 64 and two touchdowns.
11:40Jaden also ran five times for 31 yards, including a 14 yard run.
11:44I thought Jaden's running was very much in control.
11:48I also think it's huge in a game against the Eagles.
11:52That was tight that you're trying to come back in no turnovers.
11:55Yeah.
11:56And I think the way the Philly gets after the quarterback, the type of coverage they have on the second
12:01and third level.
12:04I think it's a B minus for me.
12:05It might be a B.
12:06I'm with the B.
12:07Because I, I, I, the thing of it is he gets kudos for me for maturing and throwing the ball
12:13away and getting down when he did it, when he did it a couple of times real quick, we both
12:18were like, yeah.
12:19But then when he had to do something, he did it and he still protected himself.
12:23Do you remember his rookie season week two, second half against the Giants?
12:30That was the first time we saw the light bulb go off for Jaden Daniels.
12:34You can pull the stats.
12:35If you're an enterprising listener, like the first, the first week against Tampa, Todd Bowles defense, his first ever NFL
12:41game.
12:41His instinct was to take off, put the ball down and run, put the ball down and run against the
12:47Giants early on.
12:48In the first half of that game, it was similar.
12:51Something clicked for him at halftime where he started to carve the Giants up.
12:54And I think we saw that same moment in the fourth quarter against Philly.
12:59And I believe he will carry that momentum towards this Cowboys game this weekend.
