01:31I played a bit of piano. I never played any string instruments but it was amazing.
01:35I hadn't played for years and years and years and went on holiday and there was a piano.
01:38I sat down and to start with I couldn't remember anything and then after about half an hour
01:42there were about five pieces I could still remember.

01:49ended with anything in the middle but somewhere in the brain it was banked.

13:40I used to be a nurse and the medical profession does um like to sort of obfuscate things so that
13:48they are in my opinion
13:50that's so that they can sort of um
13:52um
13:53be slightly more powerful than us poor mortals that don't understand anything
13:57so they use a lot of latin abbreviations uh when you're dispensing drugs and they have
14:03kind of long unnecessary uh words for things like um
14:08sphygmometer which you just call it a blood pressure machine that's what I used to call it
14:12uh and um on the odd occasion when I was a nurse I I did used to misunderstand um abbreviations
14:19and um when I was a first year student uh the uh senior child nurse on the ward said to
14:26me could you just pop into the ward and uh give Mr Ellis the BDI right
14:34it's not some sort of weird treatment you know size kind of
14:41and actually what the BDI is it's the Beck's depression inventory
14:46and it's kind of a list of uh symptoms of depression that you have to tick off so unfortunately I
14:52think Mr Ellis is a bit more depressed after I'd finished it
14:56I've been making weird faces at him but it wasn't all bad for me in uh in nursing I have
15:03to just say I uh one I very rarely got letters from patients saying thank you very much
15:08uh but one patient was really grateful to me because one day this patient had to have what's called a
15:14lumbar puncture which is where you get in a fetal position and they take um cerebral spinal fluid from the
15:20base of your spine and they use a
15:22a massive needle that looks like it's come out of a horror film and it's a really unpleasant medical procedure
15:28and I was attending uh whilst this poor
15:32woman was within a fetal position and the doctor was a bit of a junior doctor and he couldn't really
15:36do it properly
15:37and anyway he had nine goes and a poor woman and it was a really hot day it was August
15:44and he said to her I'm just gonna have one more go and he knelt down
15:48and I fainted on top of him because I was very hot and it was quite unpleasant to look at
15:53and um he fell on the floor and um the patient turned
15:57to me and went thanks nurse that was the best moment of my nursing career

25:26Dent and her wonderful origins of words. Well, less origins of words today, Nick, and more
25:32grammar myths. I'm going to bust some grammar myths, which many of us have grown up with,
25:38and a lot of which are based on very, very old and now outdated Latin rules, but a lot
25:44of people still hold to them very, very strongly. Is it wrong to end a sentence with a preposition?
25:52And part of the problem, part of the reason we have this problem, is that we no longer
25:56use things like wither, whence, you know, where are you going to, where are you coming from,
26:04and so, obviously, you would sound slightly odd in this day and age if you used wither
26:08and whence, sadly, because they're quite useful.
26:11So, are you not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition?
26:14The rule is very often told that, no, don't ever end a sentence with a preposition.
26:19I'd better tell Diana Ross, what about do you know where you're going to?
26:23Exactly.
26:24She's in trouble.
26:26Now, lots and lots and lots of examples where it would be very odd if you didn't.
26:32So, you would say, Gail has a lot to be happy about, for example.
26:37Gail has much about which to be happy, just sounds all wrong.
26:41Who were you talking to?
26:42To whom were you talking?
26:43I still trip over this one, because I think people expect me to use whom all the time.
26:48And so, it's a slightly grey area, but a lot of people would say, most people would say,
26:52who are you talking to?
26:53And secondly, you can't start a sentence with a conjunction.
26:57This is quite a big one, and a lot of us might trip over if we start a sentence with
27:02and, but, etc.
27:04And I know this is still being taught in school today.
27:06It's thought to be this way, because people think of them as connecting clauses,
27:10and so, you know, you can't then connect a clause if you begin a sentence with them.
27:14But, actually, you can.
27:16And even with because, you can as well.
27:19If you think about starting a sentence with a lot of force and a lot of drama,
27:23very often starting a new sentence with a conjunction actually will really help.
27:29So, if you say, for example, some people can't stand this programme,
27:34they think it's the worst one ever, full stop.
27:36And who are we to argue?
27:38Much, much more emphatic and much more forceful.
27:40So, I will continue to bust some grammar myths on another day,
27:44but those are two which I know, I think, are still being taught in schools today.
27:48And, actually, you can't always avoid it.
27:51And if you do avoid it, you might sound very strange.
