Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announces a new Canada-EU alliance, putting Canadian sovereignty, economic cooperation and greater ties with Europe at the centre of his message.

Speaking after his visit to Strasbourg, Carney described the initiative as an “Alliance for the Future,” arguing that stronger cooperation with the European Union can give Canada greater freedom to shape its own economic and political future.

The announcement comes amid tensions between Canada and the Trump administration, including disagreements over trade, sovereignty and the future of U.S.-Canada relations. Carney’s push for closer European ties highlights Canada’s effort to diversify its international partnerships while emphasizing its sovereignty.
