00:16Xi's last full state visit to Washington was in September 2015, when Barack Obama was

00:23This visit comes at an important point in US-China relations.
00:26These two countries are still dealing with tariffs, technology restrictions, rare earth
00:31supplies, artificial intelligence and Taiwan and other important strategic issues.
00:37At the same time, Washington and Beijing are also trying to maintain a fragile trade truce.
00:43So there are five major things and most important points during this Xi Jinping's visit.
00:50First the schedule.
00:51Xi and his wife, Peng Yuan, are expected to arrive at Joint Base Andrews near Washington
00:56on September 23.
00:58President Trump is expected to personally receive Xi at the airport.

01:05Usually we see presidents receiving other head of the states at the White House gate.
01:11The formal White House program will take place on September 24.
01:15Xi will receive a formal welcome ceremony inside the White House.

01:21After that, Trump and Xi will hold their main bilateral talks.
01:25Milenia Trump and Peng Yuan are also expected to have a separate program.
01:30In the evening, Trump will host Xi and Peng at a state dinner at the White House.

02:21The second major issue is trade.
02:23This will be one of the best and most important subjects in the Xi-Trump meeting.
02:27The US-China trade relationship went through a major escalation in 2025.
02:31The United States imposed additional tariffs on Chinese goods.
02:34China responded with its own tariffs.
02:37By April 2025, US tariffs on Chinese goods had temporarily reached around 145%.
02:42Chinese tariffs on American goods reached around 125%.
02:46The impact on trade was immediate and serious.
02:50In May 2025, total US imports from China and US imports to China each fell by about 40%.
02:58For the entire year, real US imports from China fell by 28%.
03:03By the end of 2025, China's share of US goods imports had fallen to around 9%.
03:09The situation created major uncertainty for companies and global supply chain.
03:15The two sides then started negotiations.
03:18The May 2025 January talks produced a temporary reduction in tariffs.
03:23Further negotiations and extensions followed.
03:25By 2026, Washington and Beijing had moved towards a broader trade truce.
03:30But that arrangement is not permanent.
03:33The current one-year truce is expected to come under review around November.
03:37That makes this September visit particularly important.
03:41Trump and Xi will have to discuss what happens after the current arrangement expires.
03:46The possible areas include tariffs, agricultural purchases, selected goods, and other trade commitments.
03:53There is also the question of China's purchases from the United States.
03:58Agricultural products, including soybeans, have been part of the earlier discussions.
04:02In 2025, US soybean exports to China fell by roughly 73%.
04:06They draw from the around 26.8 million metric tons in 2024 to around 7.2 million metric tons
04:14in the next following year.
04:16China bought no US soybeans in some months and later resumed limited purchases after the truce.
04:22Boeing aircraft and other commercial deals have also been discussed in previous negotiations.
04:27During Trump's May 2026 visit to Beijing, China committed to buy 200 Boeing jets.
04:32It was the first major Chinese order for the American plane maker in nearly a decade.
04:38There has also been discussion about a possible follow-on orders.
04:42The third major issue is rare earths and critical minerals.
04:46China has a major role in global rare earth processing and supply.
04:50They control the minefields in Africa and other parts of the world.
04:53These materials are important for electronics, electrical vehicles, advanced manufacturing,
04:58and defense-related industries. During the trade dispute, or we can call it a trade war,
05:04China introduced export controls affecting some critical minerals.
05:08In April 2025, Beijing restricted exports of seven medium and heavy rare earth metals
05:13and related magnets. The impact was quickly visible and it was really serious. Permanent magnet
05:20shipments to the United States fell nearly to zero in May. Ford, which is an important automaker
05:26in the United States temporarily shut down his production of his Explorer SUV at his Chicago
05:31plant for a week because of shortages. Other automakers in the United States, Europe,
05:37and Japan also faced production delays or temporary stoppages.
05:42It was so serious that Ford's CEO Jim Farley described the situation at one point as hand-to-mouth.
05:48Washington, therefore, wants more reliable supply chains and fewer points of dependence.
05:53Beijing wants access to international markets and also wants restrictions on Chinese technology to be reduced.
06:01So, rare earth will remain an important bargaining issue for China.
06:05The fourth issue is Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
06:09The United States has placed restrictions on China's access to some advanced semiconductor
06:13technology. Washington is concerned about the military and strategic applications of advanced
06:19ships and AI. China is also developing its own semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries.
06:25Both countries are therefore competing for technological leadership. They are in so-called silent AI race.
06:33The question during the GE's visit will also be how much technology trade can continue?
06:39Will America allow it? Will China wait for America's approval?
06:44And which technologies will remain restricted? AI governance could also become part of the discussion.
