00:45as the 81st United Nations General Assembly got underway.
00:51Protesters held signs targeting President Donald Trump,
00:55including messages demanding his arrest and accusing him of being a war criminal.
01:02The demonstrations unfolded around 2nd Avenue and 43rd Street,
01:07just as Trump was preparing to arrive at the United Nations.
01:11Some protesters staged a sit-in, sitting in the roadway and disrupting traffic.
01:17Police officers warned demonstrators that they could be arrested if they remained in the street.
01:23And then the arrests began.
01:26Nearly two dozen protesters were taken into custody at around 8.43 in the morning, according to CBS New York.
01:35Police said the demonstration and arrests were peaceful, with those detained expected to receive summonses and be released.
01:43Footage from the scene showed officers lifting demonstrators from the pavement, placing some in handcuffs,
01:50and escorting them toward police buses as other protesters continued chanting behind barricades.
01:58The protests came as Trump delivered his address to the General Assembly, where he focused heavily on U.S. foreign
02:05policy,
02:06including Iran, Ukraine, Venezuela, artificial intelligence, and his criticism of the United Nations.
02:14But the anti-Trump demonstration was only one of several protests surrounding UNGA.
02:21Hundreds of Iranian Americans and supporters also gathered outside the United Nations for a Free Iran rally,
02:30calling for international pressure on the Iranian government and support for the Iranian people.
02:37With world leaders arriving in New York and security restrictions tightening across midtown Manhattan,
02:44protests, barricades, motorcades, and street closures transformed the area around the UN into a heavily secured zone.
02:53For the demonstrators outside, the message was direct.
02:57They wanted to make clear that in their EU, President Trump does not represent their political position.
