00:00Trump is setting up the United Nations to fail in order then to blame it for the failure.
00:07While others have spoken of peace, I have made peace.
00:10When he says others, Trump means the United Nations and its secretary general,
00:16the outgoing one and the next one now being chosen.
00:19Trump and his MAGA followers never miss an occasion to belittle the UN.
00:23But here's the thing.
00:24The United Nations is rotting from the head down, but the head is not the secretary general.
00:30It's the P5 in the Security Council.
00:33Who are the P5?
00:35U.S., United Kingdom, Russia, China, France.
00:39They get to wield a veto.
00:41And the problem nowadays is that two of the five, the United States and Russia,
00:47have launched wars of aggression against a sovereign state and thereby broken Article
00:522 of the United Nations Charter, which this United Nations Security Council is supposed to protect.
00:59So Trump and Putin are the ones making war.
01:01And then Trump turns around and tries to blame the UN for not making peace.
01:06This is the General Assembly where they will, among other things, approve the next secretary general
01:12or a sec gen of the United Nations, whose term is supposed to start on January 1st.
01:18And they will do that after the Security Council sends them a name.
01:22But the Security Council is already doing straw polls.
01:25And they have the veto-wielding members and the other members.
01:29And right now we can't tell who is who, but we know that the race is wide open.
01:33And it's not even clear that the UN will be able to agree a name in time for January 1st.
01:39The original idea about the US and the UK and the allies in World War II was to create the
01:45UN
01:46as a place to make and keep the peace and to turn swords into plowshares.
01:53These days we're obviously doing the opposite, turning plowshares into swords.
01:58But whose fault is that?
01:59You can walk the grounds here of the UN and its lofty ideals, but you'll constantly be reminded
02:07of the long shadow cast by Donald Trump, literally, because that is the Trump world center.
02:15If the UN is failing to keep the peace, it's not because it has a weak secretary general.
02:21It's because it has countries in the Security Council like Russia under Putin and America under Trump.
02:27My advice, stop sabotaging and ridiculing the UN and start backing it so that the United Nations
02:34can finally start doing its job.
