03:04And I told my dad, I know what I want to do with my life.
03:10My name's Chael Sonnen.
03:12I'm the greatest fighter of all time.
03:19Chael was a real mama's boy.
03:22And I used to say to him when he was first grade,
03:25Are you going to sit on my lap when you're 16 years old?
03:29Yes, I am, Mom.

03:37I'm Claudia Sonnen, mother of Chael Sonnen.
03:41And to the world, he might be known as the bad guy.
03:45To his family, he is known as the best guy.
03:51Chael grows up in West Lynn, an upscale suburb of Portland, Oregon,
03:56countering the adage that it takes hard times to make hard people.
04:01Chael's dad, Pat, was a hardworking blue-collar guy.
04:05Took a plumbing company and built that into a real estate development company
04:11and was able to build some pretty substantial wealth.
04:15I was born in West Lynn and I will die in West Lynn.
04:19I had a great upbringing.
04:20I was from the other side of the tracks.
04:21I was born rich.
04:23Chael was of really good kids.
04:26You know, I just didn't have a whole lot of worries.
04:28He was very popular at school.
04:31Kids liked him.
04:32I loved wrestling because my father wrestled
04:35and my uncles wrestled and all my cousins wrestled
04:37and I was the youngest.
04:38So I just thought that's what you were supposed to do.
04:42And when Chael shows potential,
04:45his dad invests in it.
04:47I was one of his plumber's assistants.
04:49His dad said, you know,
04:52hey, you're a very accomplished wrestler
04:54and my son has high lofty goals in wrestling.
04:57Would you train him privately?
04:58Would you work with him?
05:00I'm Matt Linlin and I've had some success in the sport of wrestling.
05:04I got the opportunity to coach Chael
05:06when he was a young man.
05:07He was in high school.
05:08He was just in his formative years.
05:10He was a great athlete.
05:13Incredible athlete.
05:14He's an intelligent boy.
05:16He had all the opportunities.
05:19You know, his dad could go out and hire private coaches for him.
05:22Could send him to the best training camps.
05:24He took him to these rougher environments
05:26so he could toughen Chael up a little bit.
05:30At 16, Chael qualifies for the Oregon State Tournament.
05:35Chael's out there wrestling Jim Koontz.
05:38And Jim's a tough, rough kid from Roseburg,
05:41logging town down south.
05:42He's punching Chael, headbutting him, beating him up.
05:49Chael's out, time out, time out.
05:51I need a little break.
05:53I walk over.
05:54He's like, he's hurting me, coach.
05:57I'm like, hurt him back, dude.
05:59Hurt him back.
06:00You have to learn how to be tough.
06:01You got to learn how to fight through adversity
06:03and a little struggle.
06:06After Chael loses,
06:08Matt knows he needs to teach his student to harden up.
06:11He enters Chael into a competition
06:13where the lessons will be hands-on.
06:16I sent him out to Arizona.
06:18It's the Sunkist Open.
06:20Chael and I are the same weight.
06:21I've been training him.
06:22I've been coaching him.
06:23But I also trained alongside him.
06:26I was the youngest guy in this tournament.
06:29And Matt comes over to warm up with me
06:31and he says,
06:31you haven't seen the bracket yet, have you?
06:34And I go, yeah, dude.
06:35You got the toughest guy in the weight class.
06:38And he looks at me.
06:39He goes, I'm wrestling you, aren't I?
06:40I go, yeah, first round.
06:46I am for sure not going to beat Matt Lindland.
06:54In wrestling, if you're 10 points ahead,
06:56they'll stop the match.
06:57It's called a technical fall.
06:59All Matt needs is one point
07:01and they're going to stop this match.
07:02He elects to pick me up off the mat,
07:05turn me around,
07:06and throw me at what's called a belly to back.
07:08Now, that is the most supreme move
07:11in all of wrestling.
07:13So he gets one for the lift,
07:14five for the throw.
07:14The score is now 15-0.
07:16The maximum score the sport even allows you to be
07:18is 10-0.
07:21And he was just so like,
07:23you didn't need to do that.
07:25And I was like,
07:25I didn't need to,
07:27but you needed me to do that.
07:29Matt taught me there that day.
07:31You got to beat whoever is across from you,
07:34no matter what.
07:36No friends from nine to five.
07:39That lesson propels Chael
07:41to a college wrestling scholarship.
07:44He's an All-American at the University of Oregon,
07:46despite never winning a national title.
07:49I knew my clock was running out.
07:51After college,
07:53in the sport of wrestling,
07:54when you're out of eligibility,
07:55you're done,
07:56whether you're ready to retire or not.
07:58So I really wanted to go into MMA.
08:01To do that,
08:02he needs to acquire more combat sports skills.
08:06I signed up for a kickboxing class.
08:08And one day the coach said,
08:10hey, I'm getting a call from a promoter.
08:12Who wants to fight?
08:13And some of us threw our hands up
08:14and I was one of those guys.
08:17On May 10th, 1997,
08:20college sophomore Chael Sonnen
08:22steps into the MMA ring for the first time.
08:26My dad didn't come.
08:27He was laser focused on wrestling
08:29and wanted me to be.
08:32And my mom filmed the whole thing.
08:36As soon as I throw a punch
08:37and I look for the other guy,
08:38I mean, it doesn't even come close to landing.
08:41So that's really what prompted me
08:43to go for the takedowns.
08:47It was no different when we got to the ground.
08:49I didn't know what to do there either.
08:53Chael scraps his way to a win
08:54by unanimous decision.
08:58When I got home and my dad saw that video,
09:00like his reaction was totally different
09:02than any wrestling match.
09:05And he must have watched that thing a hundred times.
09:08He would show everybody this fight.
09:12and I'm getting told, good job.
09:14And I like that.
09:15It felt good.
09:17So does winning in front of a crowd.
09:20Something missing at wrestling matches.
09:22The only ones that know
09:24is those there on your team.
09:25Nobody else is going to see it.
09:26The internet wasn't a thing.
09:28You know, nobody's going to hear about it.
09:29So MMA was different.
09:32People were watching.
09:33People paid attention.
09:35I've known Chael since he was in high school.
09:37I was trying to recruit him as a wrestler
09:39to come wrestle for me at Oregon State.
09:44I'm Randy Couture.
09:46I'm an MMA champion.
09:47And I'm a longtime friend at Chael Sonnen.
09:51I remember after the fight,
09:52I remember telling Randy about it.
09:53And I told him there was 500 people there.
09:56Like, I never even got into the fight.

10:11Team Quest is one of the very first

10:21Chael showed up and wanted to be a part of it.

10:38In 2002, Chael goes undefeated,
10:42winning five pro MMA bouts.
10:46The same year, his father receives devastating news.
10:50Pat was a busy man.
10:52He's in his 50s.
10:53He needed to get his colon checked.
10:55When he finally got a check,
10:56they're like, yeah, you got colon cancer.
10:59You're going to pass away soon.
11:01Just two months after the diagnosis,
11:0456-year-old Patrick Sonnen dies.
11:07Chael is only 25.
11:10Yeah, that's a tough one.
11:11You know, losing a parent's a very tough one.
11:13I know other people go through it in younger ages,
11:16but, you know, yeah, that's a tough one.
11:25Over the next three years,
11:27Chael chases fights across multiple states
11:30and all the way to Japan.
11:32Chael is hit him.
11:33He's going to go tight.
11:34His record grows to 15-6-1.
11:39I fought like 20 men at that point,
11:41finding promoters and begging them
11:43to give me an opportunity.
11:45Then at 28...
11:48Chael Sonnen is an excellent wrestler,
11:50known for his speed and tenacity.
11:52A chance spot opens up in the UFC.
11:55It was huge.
11:56I got that fight largely because it was short notice.

22:09In fact, Chael promises that very thing eight years earlier as his father lies dying.
22:15When we were in the hospital, he was in a state where he could no longer communicate.
22:19But we knew that he could hear us.
22:22And I told him I'm going to be the world champion.
22:26When I said this to my dad, he made a sound.
22:29And so then I felt like we had a deal.
22:31If you give your word, you have to do it.
22:34No matter what it is, you must follow through on it.
22:37Because remember in that moment, just let him know, here's what you're going to miss.
22:40But here's what I'm going to go do.
22:45At the end of the day, you either get your hand raised or you don't.
22:49And I did it.
22:50And that's it.
22:51And I'll live with it.
22:52But I'm devastated.
22:53All my thoughts that I had about Anderson, I hated him even more.
22:56And hate is such a strong word.
22:57But I hated him even more.
22:59I really believe that he was evil.

23:19In the four and a half rounds before he taps out against Anderson Silva, Chael lands over 300 strikes compared
23:26to 64 from Anderson.
23:29It's arguably the greatest star-making loss in UFC history.
23:38Then, a story breaks that casts a shadow on what Chael has accomplished.
23:44I was at my desk watching MMA headlines when suddenly it came across the wire and, you know, blew my
23:51mind like everybody else.
23:53He tests positive for drugs.
23:55Exogenous testosterone.
23:57You were doping.
23:57You were doping for this fight.
23:59Chael gets done putting on the performance of his lifetime.
24:03So now, wipe all that out.
24:05After reports surfaced that UFC middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen had failed his UFC 117 drug test,
24:11Sonnen's manager Mike Roberts responded.
24:21In the aftermath of the alleged doping, Chael parts ways with his longtime coach, Matt Lindlund.
24:28I had no idea.
24:30I think I just realized at that point, him and I had different objectives.
24:36I thought maybe he was getting tougher, but maybe it was just, it was just open.
24:41I expected more out of him.
24:44I think Chael was probably heartbroken for a good two weeks and then figured out how to change the narrative.
24:54Chael goes public with his claim that he simply followed the rules.
24:58In the state of California where this fight was, the rule was extremely clear.
25:04You must disclose to the commission what you're taking.
25:07And that opportunity comes right before the weigh-in.
25:09And at that point, if you disclosed it, you got a pass.
25:27Chael says he's using testosterone replacement therapy to treat low T.
25:34If you're going to associate the guy with TRT, make sure you also associate the fact that it's legal and
25:39it's not banned.
25:41One journalist decides to investigate the legitimacy of Chael's claim.
25:45The party that Chael fought, he had in his pocket says, hey, I never gave him permission.
25:51That's a total lie.
25:52So it basically exposes him and cues him up for this next case that Chael has to deal with over
25:59being dishonest, over being a discredit to the sport.
26:02While the UFC debates what to do with Chael, another three-letter organization is wrapping up their investigation into Chael's
26:10side hustle, real estate.
26:12I went into real estate largely because there's only so many jobs that you could do and a Karen MMA
26:19career.
26:20It was a very normal day.
26:21I'm letting my little cubicle, filling out my little real estate paperwork.
26:25Including a form telling a mortgage company some of the money they are lending to a purchaser is to be
26:31used by Chael's mom's plumbing company to fix up the house after the purchase.
26:35Instead, most of the money is pocketed by the buyer, which is illegal.
26:40I didn't know you weren't supposed to.
26:42I'm brand new in real estate.
26:44And in 44 minutes, filling out a form, I commit 11 imprisonable felonies.
26:52They tell me, hey, we're looking into this thing.
26:54And I answered every question that they had.
26:58At the end of this question is where they inform me that I have confessed to 11 felonies.
27:08You're looking at it and go, oh, yeah, I did all of those things.
27:11He pleads guilty to money laundering and avoids prison by giving up his real estate license, paying a $10,000
27:18fine and accepting two years probation.
27:21He fares no better in the testosterone case.
27:25There's a rule in politics.
27:26If you're explaining, you're losing.
27:29And I found that out.
27:31I quickly learned this whole explanation of testosterone isn't going to work.
27:35As soon as I started, I mean, it backfired so much.
27:40I've just got to steer into it.
27:43For failing his drug test after the Silva fight, Chael pays a $2,500 fine and receives a year-long
27:51suspension.
27:53As tough a situation as that is, he did that with grace and integrity.
27:58And that's a weird thing to say.
28:01You know, he cheated with integrity.
28:06I'm thinking, I'm going to make a comeback.
28:08And when I do, it's going to be one hell of a comeback.

32:31All of a sudden, he's more difficult to takedown.

32:36So I get my hands on him on the fence.
32:39And he did a thing with his legs.
32:42I can't get my hands together.
32:44There was this weird panic that set in.
32:48Wow, good takedown defense by Silva.
32:51And that was something that we didn't support.
32:53He tried the spinning back fist.
32:55He fell.
32:57Anderson capitalized on it.
32:59It's an early turning point in this fight.
33:00That's a need.
33:02When you're in that moment when a guy's swarming you and you cover,
33:06that's the sign to the referee, your tag team partner, to step in.
33:21I mean, it was the right call.
33:23It was a massive letdown from a mental standpoint.
33:27Joe could have been a world champ.
33:28He could have been the best athlete in the UFC.
33:34I got to train with this guy six, seven days a week for years.
33:38So I saw what his potential was.
33:42I don't know what would cause him to come undone in those moments.

33:49He has all the natural ability, all the work ethic.
33:52Everything that he needs is, how is this guy not a world champion?
33:56And I think the answer to that question is right up here between Chael's ears.

34:13And I would see a little bit of resentment in that.
34:18I never could quite understand why he felt the need to maybe punish Chael.
34:23But I think from the way my husband was raised, I could understand why he did this.
34:29because he would be a little upset that Chael didn't live up to his potential.
34:35I think my dad almost had a resentment of how easy my life was because his was not.
34:40My dad's father was a drunk.
34:42My father was a multimillionaire.
34:43What am I supposed to do?
34:45And I found out over a short period of time that, no, you could win and you were still going
34:50to get the wrath.
34:51It was, here's what you could have done better.
34:54It was a hard bar at times, I must tell you.
34:57It felt like there was really no way to win.
35:01Maybe that bad guy is the guy that is mentally tough, that can handle any kind of adversity,
35:06can go through struggle, come out the other side harder, stronger.
35:10The hero journey, maybe that's the guy he wanted to be.
35:13Somebody that he couldn't be, that isn't him.
35:17He's a sweet kid.
35:18I see the same guy that, that I met when, when he was 16 years old.

40:37We can't prove he intended to choke you, because he was on Ambien.
40:43This incident makes me wonder whether he's doing drugs.
40:50The Chael that I know never tasted alcohol, never did drugs, as straight as you could possibly be.

41:01Or is this the line finally beginning to blur between the man he is and the man he often portrays?
41:07This character he's created, how do you even be a normal person after, you know, what you've cultivated?
