01:45U.F.C. Hall of Famer Mark Koleman
01:47jest w hospitalu w co jest słyszeczniku.
01:50Koma?
01:51Zdefinitely nie chciałabym się zniszczył.
01:54Cześć!
02:22I'm going to tear for her in a minute, and you look like I'm a nice guy.
02:26A version of Mark Coleman's life has been depicted twice on the big screen.
02:31First, he takes on the good guy supporting role in the 2002 documentary, The Smashing Machine,
02:37the life and times of extreme fighter Mark Kerr.
02:40I got a family to feed. That's why I'm still fighting, and that's why I train very hard now,
02:45because I want to go home to my children.
02:49Mark Coleman, take one.
02:51The documentary was awesome. Everybody thought I was just a great guy.
02:55And I'm like, well, that's what they showed.
02:59Most recently, Coleman is brought to life by actor Ryan Bader in the scripted biopic about Mark Kerr,
03:05also titled The Smashing Machine.
03:08I was a pretty nice, humble guy in the documentary, but if you watch the movie, I was overly polite.
03:17I didn't come out here because I love Phoenix, dude.
03:22And kind.
03:23You can't keep doing this to yourself.
03:25And humble.
03:26It's me. You don't have to apologize.
03:28Okay?
03:28It's a great portrait of me. That's who I want to be, and that's a part of me.
03:33But I had a lot of character defects to go with it, and they didn't come out in the movie.
03:39For the first time, Mark Coleman is ready to tell his story in his own words.
03:44Today, you know, I have peace and happiness, and I got most of the anger in check.
03:53But it's a daily, daily struggle.
03:57I'm really feeling some f***ing shit coming out here, so I think this is good stuff.
04:05F***ing real.
04:07Before Mark is the hammer, he's born looking more like a nail in Fremont, Ohio.
04:141964, I came out, scrawny little kid.
04:17For sure, I wanted to be the toughest guy in the world.
04:21My mom and dad were the best mom and dad you could ever imagine.
04:24They bent over backwards like bradass.
04:27They never missed a wrestling match, baseball game, or a football game.
04:33Playing sports, Mark's natural athletic ability allows him to excel.
04:38But everywhere else, he struggles with low self-esteem.
04:42Shyness is a big-time disease.
04:44It controlled me.
04:46I couldn't look nobody in the eye.
04:48I was uncomfortable with most things in life, except the f***ing locker room and the wrestling
04:55match or the football field or baseball field.
04:57That's where I was fearless.
05:02In 1981, Mark is named his high school's first ever state wrestling champion.
05:08After earning All-American honors at Miami University, he's recruited by his dream school,
05:13Ohio State, for his senior year.
05:17I transferred to Ohio State and we're at the first physical.
05:20Dr. Richard Strauss was our team doctor.
05:23Wrestling was his favorite.
05:25He hung out with us all the time.
05:27As I go in, you know, I heard somebody say, well, have fun in there.
05:32It's well known among student-athletes that Dr. Richard Strauss engages in unethical contact
05:37with male patients.
05:40You don't have no assistant.
05:41It's just him.
05:42Well, step out of your shorts.
05:45A full examination.
05:47But, you know, well, then sure enough, he's down there.
05:53He touches and he's looking and examining.
05:57And it ends, you know.
05:59Physical over.
06:00You leave.
06:01You go about your business.
06:03It became way more than that.
06:05Because it wasn't just me.
06:07It was everybody.
06:09Tonight, our exclusive report reveals how Ohio has failed to help hundreds of men.
06:14Groped, fondled, raped by Dr. Richard Strauss.
06:18Did it happen many times to you?
06:22Um, well, whenever I needed my medicine or injury, if I got a f***ing injury, I got to
06:29decide to go to him or just deal with it myself or get my medicine.
06:33So, yeah, it happened on many occasions.
06:38I didn't speak about it at all.
06:40We just all went about our way.
06:41But I didn't really know it did affect me.
06:45But in hindsight, I see what it did to me.
06:49I was angry.
06:55Now it is 1-0 Coleman of Ohio State.
06:59Perhaps channeling that anger, Mark becomes an NCAA Division I champion at Ohio State.
07:06He was the big man on campus who won his own national title in 1988.
07:12Nick Nutter from The Ohio State University, All-American, and one of the first members of
07:18Mark Coleman's UFC Hammer House.
07:20He's the toughest man on the planet.
07:23Everybody wanted to be Mark, and we called him King.
07:25He led with good authority and leadership.
07:29One of the biggest lines he ever said is, you could go to parties now or have them thrown
07:34for you later.
07:35Okay, let's hold for a second.
07:37Mark Coleman's here.
07:39Uh-oh.
07:40There you go.
07:40You're walking there.
07:42It's like a nobody there.
07:45What's up?
07:46You look like the Green Giant.
07:48Okay, watch the back.
07:50I don't talk any s*** about me in the car.
07:53Not yet.
07:53We haven't got that deep yet.
07:57Okay, the neck surgery.
07:59Yes.
08:00Still strong.
08:01Still strong.
08:02Colin.
08:03Looking good.
08:04So, Mark, we have to get through this interview.
08:07What do you want me to do?
08:08Beat it?
08:08Well, you can sit back here.
08:10Yeah, Nutter.
08:11You just relax.
08:12Come on.
08:13All right, I got it.
08:14You're all choppy.
08:16Flo, got it.
08:17All right.
08:19After winning gold at the 1991 Pan American Games, Mark wrestles for Team USA at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
08:29But after finishing a disappointing seventh, he returns to Ohio State as an assistant coach.
08:36That was humbling for him to go from world champ to placing seventh.
08:41And, you know, he found, like, a dark spot.
08:44You know, what am I going to do?
08:46Mark told me that he was too light.
08:48Mark likes to be big and strong.
08:50And he had the flu and he was sick and he just didn't...
08:53I was underweight.
08:54Underweight, yeah.
08:56I was underweight.
09:10For four years, you got it wrong.
09:12When did...
09:12I lifted weight and I drank.
09:14When did Keri McCoy...
09:16For four years.
09:16Mark, I feel like you have to go soon.
09:19But, okay, I'm not liking what he's saying.
09:21But, but the thing...
09:22After the Olympics, I f***ing drank and lifted weights and partied with you guys.
09:28But we're going to get into that, Mark.
09:29Well, he's got it wrong.
09:31He's talking about it.
09:31He's got it wrong.
09:32Quit sugarcoating it.
09:33Okay.
09:35That means no interrupting for a while.
09:36Done.
09:37Even if his answers are not coming...
09:38I know.
09:39I said my say.
09:40He gots it now.
09:44Post-Olympics, an angry and depressed Mark binge drinks while helping train the Ohio State
09:50wrestling team.
09:51And while Mark yells at his former teammate that he didn't wrestle for four years, he
09:56may be forgetting his time on the mat as coach.
09:59He'd drink and then we'd go into practice and he'd beat the f*** out of everybody.
10:05I'm talking national champions.
10:07Mitch Clark.
10:08Rex Holman.
10:11Kevin Randleman.
10:14Mark went five years up there and nobody took him down.
10:19I was a productive drunk and I was getting in the weight room, getting huge, but my desire
10:25for the first time in my f***ing life is gone.
10:29I don't want to go in there and get in shape and compete.
10:32I just was in...
10:33I was liking the break.
10:36I picked up a job as a Thursday night bouncer at this club.
10:41Come in here, drink whatever you f***ing want and make sure nobody fights.
10:47Nobody got in any fights.
10:52He drinks away from the bar as well, including at a party with friends to watch the first
10:58ever Ultimate Fighting Championship.
11:00We have our drinks and we see this Dutch kickboxer in the Samoan run across the room, kick him, his
11:09teeth go flying out.
11:11And Coleman, I could just see sitting back there thinking to himself, like, these guys, I'm going to smash these
11:16dudes if I can get a chance with them.
11:18And we're all thinking, yes, you would kill these guys.
11:22I think that's what woke him up and said, you know what, I got some work to do.
11:28Mark returns to competitive wrestling.
11:31Backstage at an event, he has an encounter that changes the trajectory of his life.
11:36Some guy grabbed me, took me in this room and said, I have a slot in 35 days in UFC
11:4410.
11:46And when I heard that, I couldn't think of anything else in the world I would want to hear out
11:52of this man's mouth, except I'm putting you in it.
11:56And I said, I will beat the s*** on a damn fry.
12:01He goes, are you willing to do steroids?
12:03I said, f*** yeah.
12:06He swaps alcohol for steroids and the results are immediate.
12:10Within a day, I put on a couple pounds overnight.
12:14Within two weeks, I went from 225 to 245.
12:20And I'd never been able to get above this weight in my life.
12:23I was so excited to be this big and this strong.
12:32What did you think about him taking steroids at that point?
12:35Um, I don't know.
12:37I think at that point, you could just tell that everybody was using steroids at that time.
12:43Even in Japan, they want the freaks.
12:45And they still, if you look at Japan...
12:47Just tell him what you thought when I took steroids.
12:50Don't f***.
12:51Just tell him what you thought.
12:52Mark, you can't tell him what to say.
12:54I can't have this run where you can't...
12:57We won't have it!
12:58I don't care!
13:00No, I'm...
13:01This is for your benefit.
13:02I got you.
13:03I got you.
13:04Either finish or you want me to leave.
13:07What?
13:08I'm sorry.
13:10You don't have to be sorry.
13:13It's hard.
13:14In this world, it's different than all of our lives.
13:17Yeah.
13:17It's a little cool now.
13:18Yeah, I know you will.
13:20It's complicated, right?
13:22The anger, I control it a lot better.
13:25But it's still in there.
13:27And it still can come out.
13:28And I hate when it does.
13:30I don't like that person at all.
13:34With his MMA debut fast approaching,
13:37Mark's abstinence from alcohol is proving to come with some psychological complications.
13:43UFC 10 was 35 days out from my last drink.
13:51So I had 35 days of fear.
13:55I talk a good game, but if my mind doesn't believe it, I'm going to lose.
14:05Everybody, especially down fry, looked a hell of a lot tougher all of a sudden.
14:11It wasn't going to be as easy as I made it sound.
14:15Please welcome from Columbus, Ohio, Mark Coleman.
14:22You got to win three fights in one night to become the champion.
14:25Pretty f***ing badass.
14:27Are you ready?
14:28Let's get it on.
14:29For me, it's perfect because wrestlers wrestle three, four, five times a day.
14:34A big punch by Coleman.
14:37Mark first dominates Moti Hornstein, then easily defeats Gary Goodrich.
14:42Mark Coleman is into the finals of his first UFC.
14:47And I'm going to have a tough f***ing finals.
14:49Now he faces the man he came to confront, Don Frye, a fellow collegiate wrestling champion.
14:56I don't think Frye spent very much time on his back.
14:59Three fights in one night, and he's beating the dog s*** out of Don Frye.
15:04A plethora of right hands.
15:07I'm Big John McCarthy.
15:09I've been a UFC referee since UFC 2.
15:11It was part of Mark Coleman's career when he first started at UFC 10.
15:15One of Mark's biggest weapons was his head.
15:18And he would just start bashing them, you know, until they had to let go.
15:25That's going to be it.
15:26We've got a new champion.
15:29Mark Coleman in his first UFC will be a winner.
15:34I wanted the whole world to see me shine.
15:38Yes, it's scary.
15:40But I can deal with that f***ing fear.
15:43When I choose to prepare, I'm going to win.
15:47This is a successful person.
15:49A person that was a winner.
15:51And everything just, it seemed at a certain point, started to implode upon him.
15:55And he didn't know how to get himself out.
16:05After dropping booze and picking up steroids, Mark Coleman wins a UFC tournament his first time in the cage.
16:12He's now MMA's fastest rising star.
16:16I wanted all the glory.
16:19I wanted everything.
16:21I wanted the whole world to see me shine.
16:24His promotion agrees and books him for their very next event, UFC 11, dubbed The Proving Ground.
16:32Now I got f***ing three months on the juice.
16:35And during that three months, the training I did, I f***ing scared myself.
16:41I turned myself into a f***ing monster.
16:45When I'm in shape, Mark Coleman is happy.
16:48I didn't need the booze.
16:51After defeating Julian Sanchez in a mere 45 seconds,
16:57Mark is scheduled to face a legend, Dan Severn at UFC 12 Judgment Day.
17:03That was actually considered the first heavyweight super fight.
17:09And, you know, they went out there to deliver it.
17:12Mark submits Dan Severn in under three minutes.
17:18His ferocious beating of opponents once he wrestles them to the mat gets dubbed Ground and Pound and earns Mark
17:24the nickname The Hammer.
17:27You know, I didn't drink for the UFC 10, 11, or 12.
17:30I had it in check.
17:32But now I'm going to take a little break.
17:34I'm going to celebrate.
17:36And I go to UFC 13.
17:39And so, usually after the fights, we would have parties, you know, obviously there was drinks that were served at
17:45the bar.
17:46And then, of course, the fans were there, meeting the fans, and they want to buy me a shot.
17:52I never said no.
17:55Mark is there as, you know, a personality.
17:59He was the champ, wanted it.
18:00It wasn't like he had a fight coming up.
18:02He was out there having a good time.
18:05Mark keeps the good times rolling.
18:08And pretty much stays drunk, leading up to his title defense at UFC 14.
18:13And it appears that Coleman has touched himself out.
18:16He seems exhausted.
18:18You need to train three months at least for something like this shit.
18:23You know what I mean?
18:23Well, you know, I couldn't put the bottle down long enough.
18:27The reality is, I chose not to prepare and to go have fun.
18:33With the winner and new UFC heavyweight champion of the world!
18:42UFC champion of the world never had to go to the distance.
18:47He finished everybody up until that point.
18:49So what happens?
18:50Your head gets big, possibly.
18:52You party a little more, you train a little less, and you self-destruct.
18:58My name is Joel Gold.
18:59I'm the founder of Full Contact Fighter.
19:02I shot one of the most iconic shots of Mark Coleman up on a cage, gassed.
19:09He could have won that fight.
19:11Instead, since decisively beating Dan Severn, Mark loses three UFC fights in a row.
19:17That is the only time we've seen a high kick work in the UFC.
19:22The UFC cut me.
19:23You're done.
19:24Mark Coleman, champion, out of a job.
19:28And for once, I didn't go home and pick up the bottle.
19:32I'm still young, in my prime.
19:34I'm not washed up.
19:36And I need to prove it to the world.
19:38And then, finally, Japan shows up.
19:42Mark is invited to fight in Pride, a hugely successful promotion secretly controlled by the Yakuza.
19:49Mark has offered $70,000 to take a dive against their local star, Nobuhiko Takada.
19:56They said, if you do this, we will put you in our Pride Grand Prix tournament.
20:01Now, that's the clincher I need in that tournament.
20:04All I cared about is, it's going to get me back in the game.
20:09Uh-oh, uh-oh.
20:11Look at it.
20:11He's the 80s.
20:12Oh, no.
20:13Oh, my God.
20:14Takada Pete Mark Coleman.
20:16I got through it.
20:17I got paid.
20:18And I got a f***ing fight coming up.
20:21Mark renews his training, stays sober, and wins all four fights in Pride's inaugural Grand Prix tournament.
20:31He's once again a champion.
20:36Mark had some of the greatest celebrations of any fighter.
20:40Come on, when he won the Grand Prix, he actually went sideways and falls in the ring, you know, as
20:46he's jumping around.
20:47I mean, you could tell.
20:49Mark Coleman cared.
20:51He let it all come out.
20:53I feel like the luckiest man in the world right now.
20:55I'm flying back to the top.
20:58And for Mark, being back on top should mean more money.
21:02So, while he haggles with pride over his next fight, he trains with his loyal team of fighters, known as
21:09Hammerhouse.
21:11It's what everybody always wondered.
21:12What is Team Hammerhouse and where is it located?
21:15It was in his garage.
21:17It was Nick Nutter, it was Randleman, Eric Smith, those guys.
21:22And Wes Sims, the project, Team Hammerhouse, Mark Coleman's prodigy.
21:30Some people are just born with that competitive streak in them, and they just live for competition.
21:36They can't shut it off, ever.
21:38I took a lot of pride in being a feared, feared team.
21:44I wanted the intimidation that Silva had in his team's shooter box.
21:50Like, I wanted that same respect, and we got it.
21:54Once Mark's contract is finalized with pride, he returns to competition along with members of Team Hammerhouse.
22:02Under Mark's leadership, they begin dominating MMA.
22:07Greatest man, greatest trainer in the world right here.
22:10We would train outside, we would train anywhere.
22:12We had no gym, per se.
22:15Mark was good at coming up with workouts that simulated a fight, your cardio, getting your heart rate up so
22:20hard, without getting hurt.
22:23And his daughters would be out there, too.
22:25We would be, like, in the grass, flipping and tumbling or riding our scooters, and him and whoever would be,
22:30like, sparring.
22:31It was just totally normal.
22:32There's pictures of us, like, kicking him, punching him.
22:34Like, we just always thought it was fun.
22:36His energy was always so great.
22:37I don't think we were ever scared of what he was doing.
22:41I'm Morgan Coleman, and I'm Mark Coleman's middle daughter.
22:45I am Kenzie Coleman, and I am Mark Coleman's oldest daughter.
22:49We loved having his friends over.
22:51We loved seeing him do what he does.
22:55What they don't love is watching as their dad falls back into old habits.
23:00I think with our dad spiraling was awful on us because we grew up with such an amazing father figure,
23:08and we loved him so much and had so much fun with him, and he just became this person that
23:13neither of us recognized.
23:16One night he was tanked, totally drunk, and flipped the car on its side, got out,
23:24was trying to flip it back over when a car pulled up, and they said, what are you doing?
23:27He said, help me.
23:28Help me flip this over.
23:29I got to get home.
23:32I think alcohol started getting to him then.
23:35Things really took a turn.
23:40I just remember waking up in the middle of the night.
23:44I heard my mom screaming, and I walked out there, and there was, like, a bunch of paramedics.
23:50I remember seeing my dad on the couch not waking up.
23:55My mom freaking out.
23:58She called me crying, like, he OD'd.
24:01He's going to die.
24:02I'm like, what?
24:03They've taken him to Riverside.
24:07They had a tube down his throat.
24:09They had him on all these monitors.
24:11The doctors mentioned we're going to call his parents.
24:15He's on life support.
24:17We're going to take him off.
24:18He's going to go into cardiac arrest.
24:31Mark Coleman is unresponsive in the ICU, leaving doctors scrambling for answers.
24:37I said, what if he took some liquid ecstasy?
24:39Well, did he?
24:41I said, well, we had some, yeah.
24:44They went in.
24:45They gave him a shot in his leg.
24:47When they did, immediately, his monitors went, whoo, they all went crazy.
24:52His hand came up.
24:54He grabbed ahold of his air tube, pulled it out.
24:58Everybody's holding him down, strapping him in.
25:00He had a concoction of drugs in him that should have killed him.
25:05After Mark survives his accidental overdose,
25:08He makes a play to return to the UFC, hoping to finish his MMA career back where it began.
25:15Dana White offers me a three-fight deal.
25:17He wants to steal me from Pride.
25:20And they offered me peanuts.
25:22Three-fight deal at $10,000.
25:24Just come up a little bit, Dana.
25:26I want back in the UFC.
25:28But Pride, now looking to compete directly with the UFC in the U.S.,
25:33makes Mark the proverbial offer he can't refuse.
25:37The main event at our first show in America, you fight Fedor.
25:42$250,000.
25:44And I'm like, through my manager,
25:46well, tell Dana to come up a little bit on each one of these.
25:51Dana don't come up.
25:52All of a sudden, my manager's saying, I need a f***ing answer.
25:55And I was sad, but I said,
25:58well, I guess $250,000 cash ain't the worst day in the world.
26:03But I did want to get back in the UFC.
26:05So now I'm fighting Fedor.
26:08Mark works hard to dominate Fedor.
26:12But Fedor's speed and agility negate Mark's skills at ground and pound.
26:17I had been drinking up to this point instead of f***ing being a professional athlete.
26:23And he lit me up pretty good.
26:25He whooped my butt that day.
26:28While Mark Coleman, the fighter, suffers a humiliating submission in the second round.
26:33It's what happens in the ring after the fight that may best define Mark Coleman, the man.
26:38They took us to his fight against Fedor in Vegas.
26:43And we were actually hiding in like a back room, like covering our ears and closing our eyes
26:47because we didn't want to hear anything for the fight.
26:50They found us.
26:51They grabbed us.
26:52They ran with us, threw us in the ring.
26:56I turned around.
26:58I'm like, oh my God.
27:00My daughters were right there.
27:01And they're looking at me like this, like,
27:06Come here, baby.
27:07Come here, baby.
27:09I just immediately just said, oh my God.
27:12Daddy's okay.
27:14Daddy's okay.
27:15These are his two girls.
27:17He knew that they were upset.
27:18And he was trying to show them, hey, no, you know, the boogeyman is not the boogeyman.
27:24Say hi to Fedor.
27:25He's a nice gun.
27:27And he's trying to say, no, it's okay.
27:29He's a good man.
27:30And it just goes to show who Mark Coleman was.
27:33I actually thought it was a beautiful moment.
27:38Many admire Mark's humanity in the moment.
27:41Even his opponent seems warmed by the family reunion.
27:44But not everybody finds it appropriate.
27:46It was so controversial, and I tried to defend myself to the public.
27:51I'm like, look, man, they didn't see the fight.
27:53When I think about it, guess what?
27:56I wish they would have been front row and watched me get up,
28:00because you're going to get knocked down.
28:04Get the hell back up.
28:07When the UFC later buys pride,
28:10Dana's earlier offer to give Mark a three-fight contract disappears,
28:15seemingly along with the Hammer's dream of ending his fight career in the UFC.
28:20So Dana White, he doesn't think highly of me as a fighter anymore,
28:25and I respect that.
28:26I'm 40, 43, 44.
28:30One year later, with his daughters once more in the ring with him,
28:34the UFC inducts Mark Coleman into their Hall of Fame.
28:37And as a friend, and as a fan,
28:40thank you very much for everything you've done for the sport.
28:43I would prefer to be in here fighting tonight,
28:45but this is unbelievable.
28:48Just when Mark thinks his MMA career is finished,
28:51Dana revives the offer of a three-fight deal,
28:54one that will culminate with Mark fighting fellow Hall of Famer Randy Couture.
28:59But it won't be a redemption story.
29:02Oh, man.
29:06It's the same story.
29:08I mean, yeah, big-time regret.
29:10I gave up everything to have one thing.
29:14Alcohol.
29:15Five seconds remains in the bank.
29:17After losing his first comeback fight at UFC 93,
29:23Mark surprises many critics
29:24by winning a decision against Stefan Bonner.
29:27I got Coleman winning this fight.
29:29Absolutely.
29:30Wow.
29:31Thank you.
29:32And once again, after I beat Bonner,
29:35I'm back.
29:36Let's go, Mark.
29:37You got to finish this business.
29:39But no, the bottle took over.
29:42And then a month later,
29:44phone call from the UFC.
29:46They threw together this last-minute
29:49me versus Randy Couture,
29:52Las Vegas, main event,
29:5550 days.
29:56Oh, no.
29:58You know, I need 90 at least.
30:01F***.
30:03Of course, I take the fight.
30:05I should have already been training,
30:07but I gave up everything
30:09to have alcohol.
30:13We were competitors.
30:14You know, Hammer House, Team Quest.
30:17You know, one of the few MMA teams and gyms
30:21back in those early days.
30:24I'm Randy Couture, MMA champ.
30:26I'm connected to Mark Coleman
30:27through competition in both wrestling and fighting.
30:30I'd been working with a new submission guy
30:32for that last part of my career,
30:34and so that arm triangle
30:36was one of my favorite techniques,
30:38and Mark was no exception.
30:41Out the door.
30:43My confidence was gone.
30:44I was frozen.
30:45The fight started.
30:47We came to the middle,
30:48and I couldn't throw a punch.
30:57And he took me down
30:58with an inside trip,
31:00and then I bellied down
31:04and choked me out.
31:06He's got it!
31:08He's out!
31:09And then I have to accept it.
31:12Randy, the natural Couture,
31:14has two thousand men coming!
31:17I had been having hip problems
31:19for about a year,
31:20but then after the Couture fight,
31:22I went and got x-rays and all.
31:24I said MRI,
31:25and my doctor calls me up.
31:26Hey, boy.
31:27He goes, you're done.
31:29What do you mean I'm done?
31:30He's like, you don't have no hip.
31:31You need surgery.
31:33But I hang up the phone,
31:34and I don't even question it.
31:36I ended up getting the damn surgery.
31:38Mark's hip replacement
31:40means an end
31:41to his 14-year MMA career.
31:43And now,
31:44I'm hating myself
31:46for getting that surgery.
31:48What's going to stop me
31:49from drinking?
31:51Nothing.
31:52Not a damn thing
31:53except death.
32:00I'm going to use a code word
32:01if you start to get out of hand
32:02so that Mark Coleman
32:03will just do a proper dog march.
32:04There's nothing to get out of hand.
32:06Let's just get through this.
32:07It's going well.
32:08And then worry about that.
32:10But that situation,
32:13it's going to be very f***ing emotional.
32:17After Mark Coleman's hip replacement
32:19ends his career,
32:20he retreats from the public eye.
32:22I met a woman,
32:24got her pregnant,
32:26and then basically,
32:28the hammer died.
32:30I disappeared for five years,
32:33raising my daughter
32:34in a toxic relationship.
32:37I was with my daughter every day.
32:40It kept me from drinking
32:42throughout the day,
32:43but then every night,
32:45it's a f***ing argument
32:46and a fight.
32:47I'm out.
32:51After leaving,
32:52I went downhill way worse.
32:57For the next year,
32:58Mark lives in a nearby hotel.
33:00Consuming alcohol
33:01becomes his full-time job.
33:04There was nothing
33:06to keep me from drinking.
33:08It became 24-7.
33:11Did you have like a
33:12stack of beer cans in the mall?
33:16What do you mean?
33:17Like what?
33:17I mean, I just want to get a sense.
33:19What do you f***ing mean?
33:20Stack of beer cans.
33:21What the f*** does that mean, dude?
33:23I don't understand.
33:24What does a stack of beer cans
33:25on the wall mean?
33:26Please tell me.
33:27I'm trying to figure this out.
33:28No, you said it.
33:29So what do you mean
33:30by a stack of beer cans?
33:32Do you have a cleaner?
33:32No!
33:33Answer this question.
33:35What do you mean
33:35by a stack of beer cans?
33:37Is that how much you're drinking?
33:40My room
33:41was a f***ing trash can.
33:44So is there a stack?
33:46It was all
33:48a f***ing stack.
33:49The whole room
33:50was trash.
33:52Empty
33:53f***ing beer cans
33:55and some vodka bottles
33:57mixed in there.
33:58F***ing do the math.
34:01You know?
34:01No, but...
34:04Choo-choo.
34:05When Wes Simms
34:06came in
34:06to knock on the door,
34:07what happened?
34:07So,
34:08Wes Simms comes.
34:12When I opened up
34:13that door,
34:14the stench
34:15was absolutely horrible.
34:18Trash was heaped up
34:19on the floor.
34:19There was no floor.
34:20You couldn't see the floor.
34:21There was
34:22towels in the bathroom
34:23that had, like,
34:25bile on him,
34:26like, where he had puked,
34:27and it was horrible.
34:31Wes was...
34:32He never lost for words,
34:35but this day he was,
34:37and he's like...
34:38He said...
34:40He's...
34:40He's like,
34:42you know,
34:43what are you trying to do,
34:44kill yourself?
34:46And...
34:50I wasn't crying or nothing.
34:51I just calmly said,
34:54no, hell no.
34:55I'm going to pull through this.
34:57I'm just not ready yet.
35:00I don't know how.
35:03Wes calls Mark's daughters,
35:05Kenzie and Morgan's mom,
35:06Kelly,
35:07looking for guidance.
35:08Kelly,
35:08he's in bad shape.
35:10He's worse than I've ever seen.
35:11Like,
35:11he's going to die.
35:15We met in the morning.
35:16She had already reached out
35:17to people
35:18to get him into treatment.
35:19She gave him a hug.
35:20He started crying.
35:21He didn't fight us.
35:23He's like,
35:23all right.
35:24I look 90 years old.
35:27When I left there,
35:28I said,
35:29Wes,
35:29take me to my mom and dad's.
35:32Then we get up there
35:33and get the clippers out.
35:35I remember my mom and dad
35:37shaving my f***ing bones
35:39with a clown.
35:40Imagine my body being just as hairy.
35:43and my legs
35:43and my legs
35:44had never seen sunlight
35:45for years.
35:46they shaved me up,
35:48this and that.
35:49Thank God
35:50that I got into rehab
35:52and I learned so much
35:54about life
35:55and resentments
35:57and anger.
35:59Yes,
35:59I have a lot of character defects.
36:03I remember one of the girls
36:04in there saying,
36:05hey, Mark,
36:05how's it going today?
36:07And,
36:07uh,
36:08I looked at her and said,
36:09I said,
36:10you know,
36:10it's just going really good.
36:12You know,
36:13everything's so good.
36:14and I said,
36:15I just,
36:15I just saw,
36:16why's it going to fall apart?
36:18She just looked at me
36:19and she goes,
36:20well,
36:20you know,
36:20Mark,
36:21maybe,
36:22you know,
36:25you know,
36:26maybe it never will.
36:27And I never
36:29thought of that.
36:30But she said that
36:31and it stymied me.
36:34And it just clicked.
36:39Selfishness
36:40is a bad thing
36:42and a good thing.
36:43and that's what
36:44made me a champion.
36:46I wanted it all.
36:47I was very selfish.
36:49I wanted more.
36:50And when I got something,
36:52it was only enough
36:53for a short period of time,
36:55that feeling of high
36:56that I got
36:56from winning something big.
36:59But it didn't last very long.
37:07I look back now
37:09and I don't understand
37:11and why
37:14I was so angry
37:15and ungrateful,
37:19selfish.
37:21I had,
37:22I had every,
37:24I had a lot of men's dream life.
37:27But for some reason,
37:30it wasn't enough.
37:35as part of his recovery,
37:36Mark transitions from rehab
37:38to a sober living home.
37:40When he went into sober living,
37:42I get a phone call
37:43from the main guy
37:44and he's like,
37:44oh my God,
37:46he's like,
37:47got all these guys,
37:48he's creating a fight club.
37:50He's making all these guys
37:51that's coming in
37:52fresh out of rehab,
37:53holding the mitts
37:54and hit bags
37:55and do workouts
37:56and he's doing it
37:57at 11 o'clock at night.
37:58He's like,
37:58get up guys,
37:59it's time to work out.
38:01Working out
38:02was going to be
38:03his new addiction.
38:04He didn't know
38:04what it would be for,
38:05but he knew
38:06he'd be in shape
38:06for something.
38:09That something
38:10comes during
38:11an overnight stay
38:12at his elderly parents' house.
38:14It's a fire
38:15and it's coming fast.
38:17Can you try to go back
38:18in the house?
38:20UFC Hall of Famer
38:21Mark Coleman
38:22is in the hospital
38:23in what's described
38:23as a deep coma.
38:31On March 12, 2024,
38:33Mark Coleman
38:34is visiting his parents
38:35when he has woken up
38:36at 3 a.m.
38:37by his dog, Hammer.
38:39You know,
38:39I woke up
38:40and something felt
38:41way off,
38:42you know,
38:43but I didn't know what.
38:46I look out in the hallway
38:47in the kitchen.
38:49There's two big clouds.
38:52So I'm walking
38:53towards the kitchen,
38:54towards the smoke
38:55and I got scared
38:57so I decided
38:58to grab this doorknob
39:00right here
39:00and I burned my hand
39:01real bad.
39:02The doorknob
39:02was on fire
39:04and I just put it together
39:06it's a fire
39:07and it's inside the walls
39:09and it's fucking
39:11coming fast.
39:13I gotta get my mom
39:14and dad
39:15and then I gotta get
39:17my dog.
39:19Mom, dad,
39:21mom, dad.
39:22Five times
39:23at the top of my voice.
39:25Mom, dad.
39:27There's no answer
39:29and it was
39:29the sickest feeling
39:31of my life.
39:33And now the smoke
39:34coming down the hallway
39:36is violent.
39:37It's coming fast.
39:39I'm using the wall
39:40to guide me now
39:40because you can't
39:41open your eyes.
39:43Through the smoke,
39:44he finally finds
39:45his parents
39:46and carries them
39:47out of the house
39:48one at a time.
39:49And it's brutal, man.
39:50I've been in there
39:51a long time already.
39:52Luckily,
39:53I had been
39:53training my asshole.
39:55You know,
39:55people,
39:55why are you
39:56training so hard?
39:57I said,
39:58I don't know why.
39:59I'm training
39:59for something big.
40:01And here it was.
40:03He returns
40:04to the fire
40:04a third time
40:05but is unable
40:07to find his dog.
40:08The flames
40:09are coming
40:09and I got
40:10through the flames.
40:11I got to the driveway
40:12and the stones
40:13and it was just like,
40:15oh my God.
40:17I made it.
40:18I got them out.
40:21Got them out?
40:22Yeah.
40:23Okay,
40:23let me get you
40:24to the squad
40:25right here,
40:25okay?
40:26But then I blacked out.
40:29Mark's smoke inhalation
40:30is so severe
40:31he's airlifted
40:33to the hospital
40:33and placed
40:34into a medically
40:35induced coma
40:35for nearly three days.
40:38Our dad
40:38has always been
40:39like the strongest
40:40person to us
40:41and so seeing him
40:43laying there vulnerable
40:45with the tubes
40:46down his throat,
40:47it was just
40:48the hardest thing
40:49to see.
40:51And finally,
40:52they told us
40:53that they were
40:53going to trial
40:55extubating him
40:56and seeing
40:56how he did.
40:59I woke up.
41:01My daughters
41:02were asking me
41:03if I remember
41:04talking to them.
41:05I said,
41:05yeah.
41:09I'm the happiest
41:10man in the world.
41:12I swear to God,
41:13I'm so lucky.
41:15Hearing his voice
41:16and him just giving us
41:17a hug,
41:17it was the most
41:19amazing thing.
41:20I couldn't ask
41:20for anything.
41:22It was like
41:22all of our prayers
41:23were answered.
41:25I can't believe
41:27my prayers are alive.
41:29You should be here.
41:33I had to make
41:34a decision
41:34unless I got him
41:36and I couldn't
41:37find him.
41:40What he did,
41:42God bless him
41:42for being
41:43the brave
41:45son of a bitch
41:45that he is
41:46and taking care
41:47of the people
41:48who have always
41:49stood by him
41:50and taken care
41:50of him.
41:51From a coma
41:52to burns
41:53to severe lung
41:53damage,
41:54Coleman had a lot
41:55to endure
41:55following his
41:56act of heroism.
41:57He literally
41:57did the job
41:58of a firefighter
41:59with no equipment
42:00all by himself.
42:01Well done,
42:01Mark Coleman.
42:02You have the respect
42:03of the mixed martial arts
42:04community and of course,
42:05Hammer,
