00:11openness to setting boundaries. Let's bring in our chief North Asia correspondent Stephen Engel
00:16as well as in Washington, D.C., Gabriela Bortor joining us from the U.S. Capitol. Stephen,
00:23let me start with you. I mean, we are still expecting to have that state dinner and dignitaries
00:27arriving at the White House. Yeah, momentarily. I mean, we are here on the North Lawn and where
00:33the dignitaries are going to be arriving shortly. Some already have. We've seen Jamie Dimon and the
00:39ambassador, David Perdue, outside the gate arriving in their tuxedos quite early. There's large-scale
00:45protests going on just on the other side of Lafayette Square, beyond the barricade on the
00:51road that passes to the north of the White House using megaphones. You can hear free Hong Kong
00:57free Tibet. Xi Jinping, you're not welcome. But really, right now, it's all about the dignitaries,
01:03the tech executives, in addition to, of course, Jamie Dimon and David Perdue that are going to
01:09be arriving here. The big question, too, is will we also get some Chinese executives? Let me paint the
01:15picture a little bit for you, because we heard yesterday from sources that Xi Jinping, when he
01:20landed here in Washington, did not bring a bevy of executives. But we are also hearing from other
01:26media, including the South China Morning Post, there could be some Chinese executives showing
01:30up at the gala dinner tonight if they had their own visas to the United States and they made their
01:37own way. We have to wait and see. That's why we're still camped out here on the north lawn waiting
01:42for
01:42the state dinner. Most of the day, the early part of the morning, for roughly three hours, there were
01:48talks, the table set up for the two negotiating teams, Donald Trump, Xi Jinping meeting as well
01:54in the Oval Office, talking about a number of very critical issues between the two countries. We know
02:00about the efforts to lower some non-critical areas of trade to the tune of $30 billion to reduce some
02:09tariffs to really show the interdependence in non-critical areas. But it's those critical areas
02:18that really are dominating the news flow, in particular with AI. Donald Trump spoke about the
02:24similar themes that he's talked about, and that is the threat to humanity that AI has posed. He's still
02:32holding to his view that that is a bit of a hoax. He put out on social media,
02:37he likes to keep AI exactly where it is. Xi Jinping here at the White House, though,
02:44gave signals that he would like to see a little bit more of an attempt by the two nations
02:49to put guardrails on the development of AI. He said, we have both the capability and responsibility
02:56to develop and manage AI for good and ensure development of AI is always under human control.
03:05And very quickly, lastly, Taiwan was a key point of Xi Jinping's remarks to Donald Trump,
03:11urging maybe in maybe the strongest terms possible as of yet, urging Donald Trump to oppose. And that's
03:20the word that he emphasized, oppose Taiwan independence as opposed to previous and current
03:26U.S. policy towards Taiwan. And that is we do not support Taiwan independence. It's verbiage,
03:35but it's very clear that the Chinese would like to see the United States state that they oppose any
03:43efforts towards separatism on the island.
