00:04Three stories in focus today. Let me start with the one that has caught the imagination of the opposition at
00:09least.
00:09Has it got momentum from the people? That's a different story.
00:12You're looking at the nationwide stir against the Chief Election Commission.
00:16And the commissioner to be precise.
00:19Congress is holding protests in different parts of the country.
00:23Somewhere there were lathe charges, other places there were water cannons as well.
00:26And the opposition, interestingly, the other opposition parties have not joined in the protests, but they are in sync with
00:34the demands.
00:35So what does that mean? What does that tell us about what really is happening?
00:38And how big will this CEC issue really become?
00:42Which brings me to story number two.
00:45Supreme Court plea has been filed. The opposition is now mulling for impeachment of the Chief Election Commissioner.
00:51Will that really happen? Remember, this is not the first time where an impeachment motion is being thought of against
00:58the Chief Election Commissioner.
01:00Will that really happen?
01:01We'll have to wait and watch to see how that goes.
01:04But at the moment, it looks like the opposition is united on this demand.
01:08And then the story that really bothers everyone watching.
01:14It bothers every woman, every man watching.
01:17It's about how little has changed on the streets of the country from 14 years back.
01:2514 years back, this headline when we wrote,
01:28No Country for Women was used during the December 16 gang grave case.
01:3314 years have gone by and yet we are again looking at the same headline, looking at similar stories.
01:39So, how little has changed or has nothing changed at all?
01:43We'll look at all those stories.
01:45First up, as always, let me take you through the headlines.
01:50Congress is upping the ante against CEC Gyanesh Kumar with nationwide demonstrations and protest marches planned outside the State Election
01:56Commission offices.
01:58Youth Congress workers are staging dharnas while carders have burned CEC, the CEC, FEGs at several locations,
02:05with some protesters also witnessing clashes with the police.
02:11Impeachment move against CEC Gyanesh Kumar is likely as the opposition escalates its attack on the Election Commission.
02:18Rahul Gandhi accused the poll body of rigging polls even as opposition calls for CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation
02:24while BJP countered the vote-chori charge saying there is anti-incumbency against the Congress,
02:30claiming opposition is rattled by SIR.
02:35Meanwhile, Bihar, yet another harassment and assault shocker, this time from Banka.
02:42A tourist hotspot, Mandar Hill, a young woman is allegedly harassed and assaulted by a group of youth,
02:48with visuals showing her being beaten with slippers, in fact.
02:52The video is dated to September 3rd, but reached police only on the 22nd.
02:58Six unidentified youths have been booked, no arrest yet.
03:04Meanwhile, the Kalkaji gang rape survivor detailed the entire attack to the police.
03:10She says she visited the Kalkaji temple with a friend on her birthday before going to the Aastakunj park around
03:157pm.
03:16She alleges three men approached them, assaulted her friend, claimed to be policemen and took their phones as well.
03:23She says that she was then taken to a secluded spot and raved.
03:29Police have identified the three accused.
03:33DDA, meanwhile, has announced tighter security across its parks.
03:37After the Kalkaji horror, access will be restricted after sunset with entry limited to designated gates at the parks with
03:46multiple access points.
03:48CCTV and lighting will be strengthened.
03:51Night patrolling intensified emergency numbers displayed with the DDA setting on a seven-day deadline.
03:57But when India today visited Aastakunj park just two days after the incident, glaring security lapses are still visible.
04:08To the latest in the IIT, Bombay suicide case, the alleged suicide case.
04:13Sahil's locked phone is now under the scanner in the probe into his death.
04:17Sources say the device is protected by a pattern lock and police have so far been unable to access its
04:23digital data, including the call records and other activity.
04:26Investigators are now trying to retrieve the data as they piece together.
04:30Sahil's final hour speaks more about how the police functions than about the case.

06:27Congress workers on the streets, slogans, protests, dharna's, water cannons, clashes with the police.
06:33All directed at one institution, the Election Commission.
06:38The man at the center of the storm, the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar.
06:43Congress workers raged slogans and burnt his effigy.
06:46One nationwide state stir and one central demand.
06:50Accountability from the poll body.
06:53Across the opposition spectrum, parties are now demanding accountability from the poll panel.
06:58From Mamta Banerjee in West Bengal to Akhilesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh,
07:02Tejasvi Yadav in Bihar, Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi, or Punjab for that matter,
07:06Uddhav Thakre in Maharashtra, M.K. Stalin in Tamil Nadu.
07:10Different parties, different states, one common demand.
07:13Election Commissioner must resign.
07:17Now these are political allegations.
07:19The Election Commission has its own position and has defended its processes.
07:23The EC has clarified, it has gone ahead to put out his, you know, their side of the story as
07:31well.
07:31What we are made to understand at the moment, apart from the initial news that came out via sources on
07:37the matter,
07:38that they have taken the allegations.
07:39They are saying that the EC has a decentralized platform.
07:45You're saying that ECINET is a decentralized platform with access limits to authorities officials such as the BLOs,
07:53the AEROs, the EROs, the DEOs, the CEOs, through unique IDs and passwords.
07:59It said no other election commission official can, you know, perform statutory functions on the platform
08:07and stress that cyber security messages and measures that are in place are in place to prevent malicious attacks.
08:16But the opposition isn't stopping at protests.
08:19It is taking the fight to the courts as well.
08:21The petition has been moved against the CEC and the Election Commission.
08:26The plea seeks, amongst other things, declaration of SIR decisions as illegal.
08:31That's demand number one.
08:33Restoration of the original Form 6.
08:35That's demand number two.
08:37Prosecution of the CEC, the Deputy Election Commissioner and the poll body's IT head.
08:44Four demands.
08:46That is what the, you know, petition in front of the court is all about.
08:51But there's another front to this, which is the Parliament.
08:53Sources indicate a fresh impeachment move against the CEC.
08:56Gyanesh Kumar is likely.
08:58The notice is being drafted and if moved, this would not be the first attempt.
09:02In fact, this would be the third impeachment push against Gyanesh Kumar.
09:06The first motion to impeach CEC Gyanesh Kumar was moved on the 12th of March.
09:10Remember, notice signed 130 Lok Sabha MPs.
09:1363 Rajasabha MPs as well.
09:16And then on April 6th, the impeachment attempt was rejected by Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajasabha Chairman.
09:23The attempt appeared to be over, but it wasn't.
09:26On the 24th of April, the opposition came back with a second impeachment notice.
09:31This time, 73 Rajasabha MPs signed the notice.
09:35And now another one is likely.
09:38A third attempt to impeach the CEC.
09:43But there is something else that you should know when it comes to this story.
09:48Dissent inside the Election Commission is not new.
09:51In fact, it is not even close.
09:53If you go back in time, back to 2009, you'll remember that the CEC N. Gopalaswamy wrote to the President
10:01then,
10:01seeking the removal of the Election Commissioner, Naveen Chawla.
10:05Doppalaswamy had accused Chawla of partisan conduct.
10:09The Congress-led government rejected the recommendation on 1st of March.
10:12Chawla went to Bikonam, the CEC, remember, two commissioners, one institution.
10:16A very public disagreement there.
10:19And then in 2019, Election Commissioner Ashok Lawasa wanted his minority discussion
10:26and his decisions that he had taken recorded in the Election Commission's final orders.
10:32The Commission decided, 2-1, that his dissent would be recorded on file,
10:37but not in the final order in the model court cases.
10:41Lawasa subsequently recused himself from meetings.
10:44On those matters, he left the Election Commission the following year.
10:47And that history matters.
10:49Because remember, institutions don't become stronger simply by someone inside them agreeing or disagreeing.
10:54Dissent has existed before.
10:56The question today is different.
10:58How much disagreement can the Constitutional Institution absorb
11:02before disagreement itself becomes the crisis of confidence?
11:08And how much political pressure can the Election Commission face,
11:11which it has been facing for a consistent amount of time now,
11:16while continuing to command trust across political spectrum?
11:20Because right now, the battle is everywhere.
11:22It's in the streets, it's in the Supreme Court, it's in Parliament,
11:26and inside the debate over the institution itself.
11:31The opposition says that it is fighting for accountability.
11:34The Election Commission has defended its actions.
11:37And the constitutional process now has to determine what comes next.
11:42Because this isn't just another political showdown.
11:44It's a showdown over the institution that decides who gets to vote,
11:47which votes count, and ultimately, how India's elections are conducted.
11:57It's in the Supreme Court, it's in the Supreme Court, it's in the Supreme Court, it's in the Supreme Court.
11:58Now it is very clear, 13 crore voters have been deleted.
12:01This is a lame excuse, and the BJP should stop making lame excuses.
12:06If they are meddling with our elections, and if their leadership is making the Election Commission do this,
12:14then it is an act of treason, and they should be aware of it.
12:17And they should take ownership.
12:19If they are doing it, then why can't they say it?
12:22What are they scared of?
12:25They are doing an illegal act.
12:27How many years has it been that they have been rigging elections?
12:32Naturally, they are so overconfident all the time.
12:35Alright, so like we said, the battle for removal, or the demand for removal of the CEC,
12:41has taken over everywhere, from the streets, to the Parliament, to the courts.
12:44And let's see where it goes next.
12:46But let me take that question to my colleagues.
12:48Joining me next is Moshami Singh and Piyush Mishra.
12:50Moshami covers the Congress Party for us.
12:52Piyush, the BJP, and the government.
12:54So I'm glad to have both perspectives over here.
12:57Let me give the first word to Piyush.
12:59Piyush, we haven't heard the government really come out and say anything in this.
13:03We've had the BJP respond, yes.
13:05We've had their party put out a press conference right after Rahul Gandhi finished yesterday.
13:11But we haven't had a word from the government yet.
13:14Is that likely?
13:15And what exactly are you hearing?
13:16What are the internal murmurs within the BJP all about?
13:22No doubt that since the time this report has come out, there are multiple talks, those are going on,
13:28multiple discussions going on in the BJP.
13:31One thing is clear that BJP is wary of the political repercussions of this entire report.
13:39And that's why multiple press conferences are being done by the top leaders of the BJP.
13:44You would remember that yesterday it was two press conferences.
13:48One, Sambit Patra, and another one was done by Sudhan Shutrivedi.
13:54So we have seen as to how serious responses are being done by Bharatiya and the party.
13:58One thing is clear that they feel the entire process, their report, which is certainly indicating about the dissent notes
14:05which has come out.
14:06They feel that this dissent has come out because of the constitutional bodies in the country are following democratic norms.
14:13But they are also of the view that whatever is being said, there is nothing on record, no quote has
14:21been given by Electoral Commissioners of India.
14:24And Electoral Commissioners of India issued an internal, issued a proper note only and only after the report which came
14:31out.
14:31And they said that all processes were followed.
14:34So yes, there could be some political repercussions to which BJP is the value of.
14:39And that's why they are as of now keeping the cards close to their chest.
14:44We are still waiting how opposition is further going to amplify this and they are going to further make this
14:50strategy.
14:51All right.
14:52Moshavi, you know, opposition seems to be united in its demand for the removal of the CEC.
14:59But we don't see them united on the streets.
15:03Only the Congress came out to protest.
15:06How are we to read that?
15:09Clearly it was the Congress protest on the streets because it was an internal thing within the Congress that a
15:17statement was issued and a diktat given from Delhi to all state units to in fact take to the streets.
15:24So perhaps, but we are told that the India bloc is mulling a huge press conference of all the India
15:31bloc leaders combined on this one.
15:34And soon the heat could be turned on in Delhi.
15:38Also, the India bloc leaders are planning their further battles collectively, whether it's a legal battle or the impeachment motion
15:45that you see coming up in the parliament.
15:47So it's a multi-pronged strategy, perhaps, that the opposition is really mulling over.
15:54And we could see some protests, you know, intensify in the next few days, Sonal, where, you know, the India
16:03bloc leaders combined do a protest.
16:05But today was simply a strategy of the Congress party to take to the streets a day later when Rahul
16:13Gandhi did that press conference slamming the streets.
16:15Okay, Mahshmi, also help me understand this.
16:18This is not going to be if this impeachment motion were to come out, it wouldn't be the first.
16:23What has stopped these impeachment motions from going through last time around?
16:29And this time around, do they have enough ground numbers to actually see this through?
16:37See, the fact is, Sonal, that an impeachment motion requires a two-third majority of the president and voting.
16:45It's also a fact that it needs the majority numbers.
16:49And an impeachment motion in the parliament is a long milestone for the opposition to achieve,
16:56simply that the last two impeachment motions hit several hurdles.
17:00The first one was rejected on the count that there were a lot of political charges without substantiation or any
17:07proof.
17:08And the second one is still pending.
17:10You know, and some of the MPs who are signatories of that motion have already left and joined the BJP.
17:18These Ahmadiyya Party MPs at one point of time were signed, but later went to join the other ranking files.
17:25So, that's also a hitter technical glitch.
17:28Now, the third impeachment motion, which apparently is being expedited, will also have a long, long run-up before it
17:37can see the light of the day.
17:38Whether it's accepted, apparently the charges will be escalated and, you know, proof will also be given by the opposition.
17:50All right, we seem to be losing that, you know, line with Moshmi, but we leave it there for the
17:55moment.
17:55Moshmi basically saying that it's not going to be an easy one for the opposition to pull through an impeachment
18:00motion.
18:00They failed in the past.
18:01There's no guarantee they're going to win this time around as well.
18:03So, what exactly does that mean?
18:05Does that mean more protests on the ground?
18:07Or does that mean there's a legal route that will come, which the opposition will be pushing for?
18:11The next few days are going to be critical on that count.
18:13But having said that, let's move on to the other big story that we must not lose sight of.
18:19This is not a country for women.
18:22You know, I wrote that headline 14 years ago as a cub reporter covering December 16, Gamble.
18:27I was supposed to be, you know, changing things.
18:31That's what we all believed.
18:33It would shock the system, force accountability, never again.
18:36But 14 years later, we are back at the same headline.
18:41Different cities, different girls, different men, but the horror, that's the same.
18:47Let me begin with what's happening in Bihar at the moment.
18:50There was Jammui first, do you remember?
18:51Two class 10 students, a girl and a boy stopped by a group of men, harassed, groped, filmed.
18:56You know, horrendous, horrendous video.
18:58Then later they had an encounter where now all of them have been arrested.
19:03A couple of days later, there was Samastipur, another minor girl, surrounded, grabbed, dragged.
19:08You can see her fighting to get away and they won't let go.
19:13Four men arrested.
19:14And today, you would think things have stopped.
19:17No, they haven't.
19:18Because today we have a story from Banka, a historic Mandar Hill.
19:22Another young woman, allegedly harassed and assaulted.
19:25Surrounded, mistreated, hit with slippers.
19:30Punished almost.
19:32By this group of people who think they are the moral police.
19:36Police are now trying to identify who these six youths are.
19:41Three videos, one state, one month, days apart.
19:46Now, listen to the people in charge.
19:48How do they react to stories like this?
19:50Let's talk about leaders of Bihar.
19:52We'll begin with the Supreme.
19:55We'll begin with the Chief Minister.
19:58He recently, at an event, made a speech.
20:01And he said, if accused hadn't made a reel, they never would have been caught.
20:08According to him, they got caught because, or the entire matter came to light,
20:13because they filmed themselves.
20:18There is Jammui's own MLA, a minister in his government.
20:21Shriyasi Singh, who was on this very show, defending moral policing, saying that it can
20:27be done in a decent and elegant manner.
20:30She did say, I want to clarify this and underline.
20:32She said that what has happened should not be tolerated.
20:35But then, soon after, the next sentence was, if moral policing has to be done, it can be done in
20:40a decent and elegant way.
20:42Then there is the Bihar minister, Ashok Chaudhary.
20:46On Samastipur incident, he says, this happens in America and Japan also.
20:50So, well, Mr. Minister, Mr. Chaudhary, that's not the point.
20:56The point is, these are not isolated videos anymore.
21:00They are becoming a pattern.
21:01And when the leaders speak like this, what hope do we have from the people?
21:25We are now getting reports that the accused in this case, the molesters in this case,
21:31the criminals in this case, were also minors.
21:34Do we have any idea if they come from a particular section, if they are of a particular gang,
21:40or they represent a particular organization?
21:42Do we have any such details?
21:47I don't want to put these people under any sort of category.
21:52Antisocial elements are exactly what they are, unfortunately.
21:55And they live in this society.
21:59So, just, I don't know where they get this power to think that they are moral.
22:06And moral policing can be, on one hand, it can be done in a more decent and elegant fashion.
22:13But the way that they mishandled, mistreated the boy and the girl together is absolutely not tolerable.
22:50We are not trying to do this.
22:52This is the most important thing.
22:53The government will be the government's government's government's government.
22:58They will give us the government's government's government's government's government.
23:01So those are your lawmakers, ladies and gentlemen.
23:04And that is the state of Bihar.
23:06But let's move to Delhi next.
23:08A 17-year-old visits Kalkaji Mandir with a friend afterwards in a DDA park right next to it.
23:13Three men walk up to her, say that they are the police.
23:16They first separate the boy and the girl.
23:18They beat up the boy, then take the girl to a secluded corner, gang-rave her.
23:24The story we know, all three have been arrested.
23:28And the DDA, it has now ordered more lights, more CCTV, more patrolling.
23:33Now, after all of this.
23:36Now, two days later, a first-year master's student from Hindu College says she and a friend
23:41were followed near the Hakikat Park with lewd comments.
23:46Men trying to pull them into a car.
23:50Two men have been arrested.
23:51But she says something else, too.
23:54Before anyone registered in FIR, she was sent from one police station to another over jurisdiction.
24:02And you've just, just imagine that.
24:05You've just been through something like this.
24:06Somebody tried to pull you in a car and your friend, you know, managed to pull you out.
24:11You have got the courage to go to the police, register it, and they ask you to go to another
24:17place.
24:19And they're fighting over whose area, whose jurisdiction is this.
24:22Deja vu.
24:23Deja vu of, you know, December 16 gang-rave.
24:27And why do I say deja vu?
24:29Because, you know, back then, in 2012, Delhi had a woman chief minister, Shira Dixit.
24:33Today, Delhi has another, you know, chief minister, a woman chief minister, Rekha Gupta.
24:39Different party, different era, same fear, walking home after dark.
24:45What happens when men, men to protect you, are accused?
24:52What happens then?
24:53Because look at these cases.
24:55Amroha in UP, a 23-year-old woman from Haryana says she was invited on a trip to a religious
25:01place.
25:02She says she ended up at a farmhouse where three men in uniform raped her.
25:07A fourth tried to.
25:09Two UP police personnel, two CRPF personnel, all four have been arrested.
25:14The sub-inspector has been suspended.
25:17When men in uniform are committing these heinous crimes, what hope do you really have?
25:24Are you left with any hope that justice will be served, that law will follow its course?
25:30See these details.

27:02Y was a park next to a temple, a woman's college dark enough for this?
27:08Why does a women have to argue about jurisdiction before someone writes down her complaint?
27:14Why do men in group think that they can grab a girl in broad daylight, film it, post a reel
27:19about it, and nobody will do anything.
27:23And here's a pattern.
27:26Nirbhya was out with a friend.
27:28The girl in Kalkaji was out with a friend.
27:30The girl in Jammui was out with a friend.
27:32Every time a girl is seen with a boy, it becomes somebody's business to intervene, to moral police, to execute,
27:43to punish.
27:46It goes the same way year after year because those numbers are not lying to you.
27:50Look at those numbers.
27:53There is outrage, there is arrest, there is statement, there are promises, and then another incident, another video.
27:59So when does safety become the system and stop being the apology we hear after the crime?
28:05When does that really happen?
28:07Because the girls in the country, women in this country have had enough.
28:13And this is what they are saying.
28:40Delhi is becoming more and more unsafe for women.
28:43Just a few weeks back, we got news about the Noida rape case, gang rape case.
28:48Then just a week after that, we're getting to know that a decomposed body of a minor girl was found
28:53in the outskirts of Delhi.
28:55So we want to ask Delhi government.
28:58We also want to ask the center because law and order is under the central government.
29:02Like, whom are we supposed to go to?
29:04Rekha Gupta ji, who's a woman chief minister, needs to give us some reassurance.
29:09Ma'am, what are we supposed to do?
29:16Ma'am, what brings you here?
29:21I got this call that LSA students are planning a march against the rape incident that happened in Kalkaji, Avril,
29:27at Jammui.
29:28So, in solidarity of that, I see.
29:32What women empowerment are you talking about?
29:35When we are not even safe in our college and even when it comes to, it's not only, I would
29:38say, the government, it's also the institution of NSR.
29:41There are no CCTVs around college.
29:43We have been asking for street lights.
29:45Nothing is happening.
29:47We protested one day and it took us, it took them half an hour to just put one CCTV in
29:54front of the principal room.
29:55Why can't you do it around the rest of the campus?
29:58What is stopping you from doing that?
30:00We need active ping booth there.
30:03And the second thing is we need our protection there in front of the back gate.
30:19No country for women, indeed.
30:22But what about this being a country for young people?
30:26Well, let's move our focus and shift our focus to what's happening in IT Bombay.
30:30The probe into the IT Bombay student's alleged suicide case, Sahil Vakode's death, is focusing on his locked iPhone now.
30:38You heard that right, his locked iPhone.
30:40Police are yet to access the phone's data.
30:42They are saying that the device is protected by a pattern lock, something we all have on our phones.
30:47And investigators say that even those close to Sahil did not know it, so they've not been able to crack
30:52it open.
30:54Yes, you heard that right.
30:55The phone could provide crucial clues, including his searches and digital activity around the September 18th examination.
31:02Police are also reconstructing the 47-minute window that Sahil left the exam hall at 12.38pm and reached the
31:09hospital at 1.25pm.
