02:35vibes all the way around all right what was the difference last Sunday Andrew why was that
02:40offense able to wake up in the set why did the defense play better on Sunday why all those things
02:45the why I think let's start with the defense I think communication wise it it took them a week to
02:51to finally figure it out a little bit the the starting defense only took so many snaps together in the
02:58preseason now they took plenty together in Berea but Carson Swessinger really wasn't part of any of
03:04those he looked decidedly different and better and more comfortable and fly to the football and not
03:10missing tackles in week two but missing tackles forget about Carson here was a massive difference
03:16week one to week two for the entire defense they missed something like 17 tackles week one I don't
03:20know what it was it was an absurd number and they had so much trouble tackling on the perimeter
03:26tackling in the alley whenever Jacksonville went wide whenever Jacksonville went quick game they
03:30couldn't tackle and there were so many so much hidden yardage there and so many extra first downs
03:36the Jaguars picked up that for the most part it wasn't all cleaned up for the most part that was
03:42um that was much much much much better last week I think that really showed from the first quarter as
03:49for the offense still got around the football guys but uh if you're gonna dink and dunk down the field
03:55we kept saying you know defenses will say hey dink and dunk down the field conceptually here the
04:00Vic Fangio tree dink and dunk down the field and eventually you're gonna make a mistake
04:04Deshaun didn't do that last week he dinked and dunked and when they had the explosives they took
04:09them and they got them do you buy the idea that the defense took off a little bit last week
04:15because
04:15there was more man coverage and less zone that's kind of been a theory that's floated around here
04:19I mean it certainly helped but Miles Harden's pick was when he dropped into zone
04:25so guys like zone is played around the NFL I don't know if it was on your show but
04:30the number for week one around the league 62 percent of all dropbacks week one not week two
04:35but week one 62 percent league wide zone and that was third highest in a decade in any given week
04:42I know the Browns like to play man I think they're better in man but you got to mix it
04:46up you got to
04:47throw in a salad every now and then too unless you're Al Michaels I mean I love Al we've had

04:53conversation I don't get it I'm not a vegetarian in any way shape or form but come on you got
04:59to you got to
04:59get some green in your life for a multitude of reasons absolutely there's an exception to every
05:03rule and Al Michaels is that exception I don't I don't understand how people physically survive that
05:08way by not eating so so I was not eating any Al doesn't eat vegetables yeah I used to be

05:37there unless it's making everybody you don't eat like peppers no squash can't stand tomato no tomato
05:45I'll do zucchini every once in a while tomato is an absolute no would you don't want to be around
05:50me no so this is crazy thing my dad had this no you're crazy no no you gotta hear this

05:56this and I just picked it up like probably in the last five years that like when I have and

06:02to be the vinegar like whenever I try to eat either wings sometimes or ketchup I start sweating
06:10profusely from my head right where you know where the follicle spot is like you know what I'm saying

06:19like all your hair yeah I do I just ketchup yes I just start I start sweating profusely from there
06:26it's it's the most bizarre thing that is bizarre I love eating wings but I just like okay I better
06:32have a roll of paper towels and I'm sure that grosses everybody out hey let me ask you this question
06:36my friend yes yes um you had bad weather as far as heat is concerned for the first two weeks

06:44we're looking at like 68 70 beautiful little bit of cloud cover coming up it's gorgeous how much I
06:49mean we all know about the rain delay right or the lightning delay but how much do you think the
06:53weather affected is in particular the defense that first week and how they were kind of able to
06:58overcome that the second week but I mean those guys were a little gassed that first week because
07:02it was so hot for two weeks in a row look around the league everybody who's gassed week one I
07:09think
07:09it's a it's a league-wide problem and look at how many teams blew leads in the fourth quarter week

07:16week one is already gone from my head I remember the New Orleans Detroit game there are a couple other
07:21games that featured late rallies where one team had it the other team simply died and a lot of that
07:28has
07:28to do with how much you play in the preseason and this is you know a conversation that we have
07:33every
07:33single summer how much do you play your starters in preseason can you truly replicate a game
07:39situation with the joint practice and the Browns had one this year as compared to two last year
07:42would you need to have your guys out there week one often feels like the fourth preseason game
07:48but it counts it's real the intensity is certainly higher but the question is how much can you maintain
07:53that intensity and if you look at the missed tackles I think Denver which had the number one
07:58defense in football a year ago had like 28 missed tackles 24 missed tackles something in the 20s week
08:04one and they too like the Browns cleaned it up week two and had a much much much better defensive
08:09performance in week two I think that is just the way the league is right now and certainly

08:38matchup base to you or is this something to be concerned about uh I wouldn't be concerned I would
08:44say that the Browns pass rush overall has without blitzing the front four getting home by themselves
08:51has been a bit of an issue so that to that I think overall big picture more say than Jared
08:59versus the
09:00concern Browns were able to get home last week when they blitzed they brought the linebackers
09:04um didn't get home all the time but they got home uh I thought Mason Graham went in some one
09:09-on-ones
09:09and cleaned it up when he got some help in the pocket as well from Malik Collins and others
09:13getting upfield that to me is the most encouraging thing on the defensive line but yes collectively
09:20they have to get to the quarterback and this is a different challenge this week because Bryce Young
09:24could throw on the run um all this talk about well he's hard to find you know where he is
09:30he's the
09:30little guy back there playing quarterback and uh he's throwing the ball without seeing half the time
09:36where it is going but he's got a great feel for this offense and where his wide receivers are this
09:43offense is a well-oiled machine here guys they've scored 71 points in two games and some of that is
09:49defensive there's a pick six last week but uh he is a challenge uh Andrew what do you think
09:55Jared versus start this season I heard a little debate on the radio this morning about slow start
10:00this I'm like the guy's been here two weeks and again let's stop trying to compare him to Miles
10:05Garrett that's not what I want I want to see him he has the same amount of sacks yeah yeah

10:10exactly right and so I'm listening to this conversation this morning and I'm like man cut this guy a little
10:15slack you know he's coming from LA to here brand new defense still trying to learn and I didn't I
10:20never once expected him to be Miles Garrett and when I need him to show up every once in a
10:24while I
10:25you hear his name or you hear it's like just give me your impressions of Jared Verse and what we're
10:30watching unfold in front of us he is drawing the attention of the other team first and foremost if
10:36you go back and you look at the first quarter and again it's only one of the eight quarters they
10:39have
10:39played but go back and look at the first quarter Jacksonville had a plan for him every single
10:44drop back right out of the gate so they had circled him right out of the gate that's new for
10:48Jared
10:48obviously he came from a defense where there are a lot of guys that could eat a lot of guys
10:57Braden Fisk and Byron Young and Kobe Turner that that that team collectively in Los Angeles got after
11:04the quarterback now he's the guy that gets the circle and he's the guy that gets the extra attention
11:08like I said I'm not remotely concerned whatsoever look at the play that he made chasing down
11:17Baker in the second half where the Browns kept the the Buccaneers to a field goal when they were in
11:22the red zone stiffened again this is before the end of the game he's the one who chased Baker across
11:28the field from right from the right side to the left side and hit him as he threw that was
11:34the one
11:34where Miles Harden almost had his second pick he drove Baker into the ground and Baker had to go
11:39to the blue medical tent you kept seeing him on the sideline stretching out his shoulder so he has
11:43certainly made an impact even if he doesn't have sex Andrew Siciliano joining us on the hotline
11:48I am a sucker for a big body x wide receiver who can get up and get and just ball

11:55and Denzel Boston has fulfilled that and then somehow impressive has he been to this point to you
11:59so I was having a conversation with somebody close to the Washington program a couple of weeks ago
12:06and they said that there used to be a joke at UW who's better practice Denzel Boston or game Roma
12:15Dunze because if you remember Denzel Boston use uh didn't really get on the field until his last two
12:22years until his last two years he had to wait long line of wide receivers whether it was a Dunze
12:27or Polk
12:28all those guys ahead of him McMillan he eventually got on the field then scored 20 touchdowns his last
12:34two years I know people are getting Josh Gordon vibes I'm not ready just because he wears 12
12:39to say this is Josh Gordon because he isn't Josh Gordon was a superhero but with two long touchdowns
12:46the way he laid out in Jacksonville and then the way he broke tackles and broke away I spoke to
12:51him
12:51on Monday I told him it looked like he was gliding guys he's got three people chasing him including a
12:57corner
12:57who can run in McCollum and he he was gliding to the end zone they have found a dude and

13:06we're all happy about it um let me throw this last question at you the running game are we concerned
13:11yeah I mean when Deshaun Watson's your leading rusher that kind of concerns me yeah no it should be
13:16concerning it's concerning for everybody and they got to get that cleaned up it's more it's not just
13:20Quinchon and all the questions about is Quinchon healthy yes he is healthy he's absolutely healthy
13:27um I mean I can't speak for him I have not spoken to him this week I don't know if
13:30he got dinged up
13:31last week but coming into the season there were no lingering effects let me put it that way from
13:35last year's injury last year's surgery he looked great in camp he is good to go collectively they
13:40got to get it going and collectively there are a lot of little things that they got to do better
13:44including get push up front which they're pass blocking well the push up front of the run game has
13:48not been there if there is any cure I hope it comes this week because Carolina is giving up
13:54and I know the numbers small sample size and they were skewed by what Ben Johnson did do in week

14:01but they're giving up 224 yards a game on the ground they are the worst run defense in football I'm
14:10not
14:11guaranteeing a Quinchon 100 yard game but if we are still having this conversation next week then
14:18I think there would be more concern than there is now so Andrew with the run games you know a
14:24little
14:24bit of struggles there that usually falls onto the offensive line what have you thought of the
14:28offensive lines play to this point like I just said I think the pass blocking is good I don't think
14:32they're getting enough push and that not just my opinion from up top but that's Gerard's opinion
14:36from down on the sideline they're not getting enough push and they're not moving people
14:40in the run game sometimes there are holes and they they have um they've not been able to hit them
14:46I who was it was Travis Schweitzer yesterday saying hey much like Deshaun you got to let it rip and

14:52think the follow-up question from Grossi was how do you let her how do you tell a running back
14:56or how
14:56does a running back just quote-unquote let it rip and that is not be tentative hit that hole
15:01because you know you have the ability and uh and get through there I I think you will see a
15:07better
15:07I hope you will see a better run game this week Nick Chubbs in the building Alex Mack in the

15:13you got to you got to do it for them uh last one more last to give me like I
15:17don't want to say keys
15:18of the game but just something they need to do this week because they're going up against a tough
15:21team I think a lot I mean Carolina's this is going to be a hard game and I don't know

15:31ago they almost beat the Rams in the postseason um they've scored 71 points as I mentioned in two

16:06got a contract like Parker Washington eventually will and people have a hard time covering him
16:11Jalen Johnson is a faster player than him the the Bears corner and Jalen Johnson could not stay with
16:19with Coker week one he's got an ankle he's barely practicing that would be huge if he doesn't go
