02:13Is because the ability of Vayetzi to jump that height just with a spring from his hindquarters means that the
02:25muscle integrity and the responsiveness of the muscles,
02:30to the neural inputs, has increased.
02:33Because, you know, a few months back, there's no ways Vayetzi would have been able to do that.

02:55So the lions absolutely know what this camp represents.

03:43We're going to be having highs of about 25, 26 degrees today.

04:26Let's just talk quickly about Vayetzi.
04:30So I can't remember how long ago, but Vayetzi had that episode where
04:37where I was taking him for a walk with Ginny and I opened the gate
04:41and it actually looked like he was drunk.
04:44It looked like he had been sedated and he was stumbling all over the place.
04:50And so obviously we did some tests and, you know, got Doc Caldwell out.
04:57And all we could find really was kind of a decreased neurological input to his hindquarters.
05:06So it almost looked like there was some form of a narrowing of the spine
05:12or a spondylosis of the spine.
05:15And that was quite worrying because we thought that he wasn't going to recover from that.
05:22But luckily, slowly but surely, and with the right treatment from Dr. Caldwell,
05:32slowly but surely, Vayetzi started to utilize his hindquarters a lot more
05:41to the degree that you saw him today jump into the vehicle.
05:46And literally like a young lion would.
05:49At 17 and a half guys, so he's almost 18.

06:16And that we don't want.
06:19We want those to be nice and full.
06:25But on an older lion, that's your. I didn't see you.
06:38On an older lion guys, that is one of the first places that they lose, they tend to lose weight.

07:08Guys, this river seems a lot fuller and we haven't had much.
07:13Mind you, we had rain last week.
07:15We had quite a downpour.
07:16So I think that that has filled us up.
07:18This was looking a bit lower, but wow, it's looking really pretty.

07:27So while we are waiting for Ginny to catch up.
07:31I wanted to actually get into what I wanted to talk about today.
07:37And I've been meaning to watch this documentary for a long, long time.
07:41But something's always got in the way.
07:44And then about two days ago, I was on social media, as one does, scrolling away aimlessly.
07:53And then I came across this post of this lady who was really, really tucking in to someone I follow.
08:03And that is Ocean Ramsey.
08:05And talking about the documentary that was on Netflix called The Shark Whisperer, which aired a year ago, but somehow
08:16has become topical again.
08:19And yeah, long story short, this person was going into all the reasons why Ocean is a bad influencer, let's
08:32call it that.
08:33You know, where the narrative is shark conservation, this person, this commentator was saying that it sends a wrong message.
08:42And, you know, she was carrying on about also her credentials and whether the shark scientific community should be taking
08:55this person seriously.
08:56So I thought, let me go and have a watch because this is very close to my home.
09:03Ocean is going out into the wild and swimming with sharks that are wild.
09:11And I suppose the nub of the criticism was the fact that she's touching them and interacting with them.
09:18And that was the beef that this person had.
09:22And I thought, without having seen the documentary, maybe there's some merit to that argument.
09:28However, I watched the documentary and understanding the context in which she does what she does, I just think it's
09:39a non-starter.
09:40I think what people need to understand in this world is things are contextual and we cannot just look at
09:47something at face value.
09:48And I know we love to throw in the equation that this is going to be a case of monkey
09:54see monkey do.
09:54I hear it all the time with my interactions and it is disingenuous.
10:00It really is disingenuous to believe or to say that everyone who sees somebody doing something uniquely special with a
10:14wild animal or in whatever field they are good at.
10:18It means that, you know, we should stop it because there is some idiot out there who may just imitate
10:26what you are doing.
10:27I think by and large 99% of people out there, guys, will look at what someone does like myself
10:35or Ocean
10:37and realize that this is somebody with a unique ability and talent.
10:42And that if you put me, who actually understands animal behavior, in the same situation in the ocean as her,
10:53there's not a stuff I would be doing what she does, even though she's shown me a new side of
10:59sharks,
10:59which I think is so important for sharks and their reputation.
11:05And so what I'm trying to say, guys, is the context of how she does what she does is everything.
11:14No, no, no.
11:18I love that about them.
11:21They're so good.
11:25We're just taking a break here.
11:30If we lose all of these people that we look up to that are showing us the importance of wildlife
11:36and, you know,
11:38where are we going to be 20 years from now when everything in nature has just been so sanitized that,
11:47you know,
11:49everything's hands off and don't touch and don't look and don't disturb.
11:54It got me thinking of Baba Diom, the Senegalese forestry ranger,
11:59and he was talking about this back in the 60s.
12:03And he said, at the end of the day, we're only going to conserve what we love,
12:06love what we know and know what we are taught.
12:09And, you know, that is, you know, how do you get people to love this animal?
12:17How do you get people to, you know, see Vietzi in a different light?
12:24And I think the visual hook is an important one and it certainly works for Ocean.
12:31And I think the amount of good that she's done, I would put her there, yeah,
12:39I would put her there with the likes of Jane Goodall and Steve Irwin and those types of people
12:49because I think she's influenced a lot of kids and people into seeing sharks differently.
