01:09Lanzarote and the Canary Islands has long since built a global reputation as a windy destination
01:14for sailing and surfing sports.
01:19The Volcanic Island is only 80 miles to the African coast and in summer it's almost always windy.
01:29And that's why the world's leading Grand Prix monohull sailing circuit, the 52 Super Series,
01:34has come to Lanzarote for the very first time.
01:39It's a privilege to have the TP52s here.
01:42It's the confirmation of Lanzarote as a sailing destination.
01:46Winter is lighter, summer is a bit stronger, but we can sail every day of the year.
01:53It's a dream having this kind of boat here.
01:57Watching the boat sailing around the island and with the wind we have here is just amazing.
02:05The 13 top teams from 11 different nations have left the lighter winds of the Mediterranean behind.
02:11The third and indeed the fourth events of the 2026 season present an exciting, high-adrenaline, fast and furious new
02:19challenge.
02:19Buckle up and prepare for take-off in Lanzarote.
02:26After a first regatta in Puerto Portals Mallorca and a second at the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Porto Cervo,
02:33Sardinia,
02:34the Marina Rubicon Lanzarote Sailing Week brings the fleet to an entirely new venue.
02:42We call them the Lanzarote Package.
02:44Good sailing every day, good weather, good surfing, good cycling, good food, awesome landscapes.
02:53All the Canary Islands have a volcanic origin, but probably Lanzarote is the one that shows more this feature
03:01because you can see a lot of vulcanos.
03:04The color of the island is mostly dark and you can see the rocks, the stones in the black color.
03:12Many people say, okay, it's like going to the moon.
03:20Out here in the open Atlantic, it's wild, it's windy and wavy,
03:24and it's going to be a tough physical test of stamina and perfect crew work.
03:43The Marina Rubicon 52 Super Series Lanzarote Sailing Week is the third of five events of the 2026 season,
03:49and so far one team has dominated both regattas.
03:53And here goes Sled.
03:54They win the first event of the 2026 season here on the Bay of Parma.
04:01Sled get across the line in third, and that's enough to win.
04:05Sled are 2026 world champions here in Porto Chervo.
04:11So Takashi Okura's Sled have won both regattas so far in the Mediterranean.
04:17They lead the circuit by 15 points after the two regattas,
04:20and the nearest title rivals so far are Germany's three times world champions, Platoon Aviation.
04:26Going to a new venue for the class is really exciting.
04:29We've been to a lot of venues several times, but Lanzarote will be new for the class,
04:33and I think it'll make it a really even playing field.
04:36But heading to the big winds of Lanzarote,
04:38Sled also have a historic reputation for being fast and winning in strong winds.
04:43The guys love it.
04:44I mean, we much prefer to go to venues where it's exciting with 18 to 25 knots of breeze than
04:50six or seven.
04:51So the team's excited about going somewhere new and somewhere windy.
04:55It's actually quite enjoyable when you see a lot of white water or green water coming over the bow,
04:59and the speed maintains and the chute stays in one piece.
05:08If any team can challenge Sled in these strong wind conditions,
05:11it's Jean-Luc Petit-Hougen's Papre.
05:14Finishing third last year, before the 2026 season started, the team had high hopes.
05:20We had a target for 2025 that was to be in the first five teams at the end of the
05:27season,
05:28and it was a great success for us, I mean, to finish third overall.
05:35When we look at the 2026 season, it looked good for us.
05:40More strong wind than light wind.
05:42So our expectation would be to do at least as good as what we did last season.
05:47But the results in Mallorca and Sardinia did not match up to the team's high expectations so far.
05:53We were expecting more wind in Porto Ceau, which was not the case.
05:58We had some good and some bad races.
06:00We are in the middle, which is not so bad if you compare to the level of the Super Series,
06:07but that was not our expectation.
06:10They are one of the fleet's strong wind specialists.
06:12They only just missed out on last year's world title at a windy, brutal Cascais in Portugal,
06:18and they're looking for revenge in Lanzarote, aiming for their first ever regatta win.
06:23We feel more comfortable in this condition than when it's light wind, so of course our expectations are quite big.
06:29In Lanzarote, Paprec welcome ocean racer Johan Richem to the hot seat as their navigator.
06:35Amazing to be here. Some of the sailors, I've looked at them since I'm almost a kid or a teenager
06:41at least, you know,
06:42Terry Hutchinson, Ed Baird and people like that.
06:45So I'm in a WhatsApp group with them. What's going on?
06:48Richem is a Vendée Globe runner-up, a double winner of the Route de Rome solo race to the Caribbean.
06:53He's an expert in solo racing and the deep oceans, but this top level of inshore Grand Prix racing is
06:59new to Richem.
07:01But winning races is in his DNA.
07:03These are two extremes in the sport. They're about the same size of boats.
07:07They have about the same sail area, but they just are so different.
07:12My boat is with an inside cockpit. I'm fully protected.
07:16I'm mostly sitting down in kind of an airplane seat.
07:20The race can take up to maybe 70 or 80 days when we do a Vendée Globe.
07:24Whereas for this, the one race is about an hour and a half.
07:27If I'm hiking, so I'm over the side of the boat, I'm looking at the next maybe 5 to 10
07:36minutes.
07:36And the maneuvers take about maybe 5 to 10 seconds, where mine's about more like 5 to 40 minutes sometimes.
07:44So this is really quick racing and I enjoy that. It's a real passion and I want to keep having
07:50fun doing it.
07:51But if I can win, it makes it more fun.
07:58Race 1 starts in strong breeze and big choppy waves. This is a wild physical race, a real contrast to
08:05the Mediterranean so far.
08:07Welcome to Lanzarote for the first race of this event. We have 13 boats and right now 25 knots of
08:15wind and more.
08:16Winds well over 25 knots and a competition arena where the fleet has never raced before.
08:22Sled make an incredible heart-stopping start to race 1.
08:25And the door is opening for Sled. They seize the initiative, charge through and take the early lead.
08:31The newly crowned world champions from Sled are on it from the very first gun in Lanzarote.
08:3750 metres clear at the first turn, they're racing from the front all the way round the windward-layward course.
08:44And here we go, crossing the finish line, it's Sled, winning race 1.
08:51Another Port Tech start, which certainly was out of the box again.
08:54It was another one of those good calls by the back of the boat.
08:57You know, it's breeze on, which we all love, different venue.
09:01It was an exciting day, so a good way to start for us.
09:04The French on Paprec prove once again they can and do perform in the strong winds,
09:09finishing second just behind Sled in the first contest and winning the next race with Sled in second.
09:16The French show great downwind speed and composure under pressure.
09:19Yeah, amazing day. I couldn't believe it. We had two beautiful starts and Loic Perron was amazing on the tactics.
09:27He weaved us through the little holes in the wind in the fleet.
09:31I lost my connection to all the electronics before the first race.
09:37So I kind of sat down and did it with the compass.
09:41Downwind, these boats really are on the edge of control and the equipment and crew are really being tested to
09:47breaking point and beyond.
09:49The spinnaker is gone, blown to pieces. That's not the first sail to explode today and it will not be
09:55the last.
09:56Seven spinnakers have been shredded on this brutal opening day the most sail damage this fleet has seen in many
10:02years.
10:02Another sail gone. It's frustrating, but every sail lost means place is lost on the race course.
10:10Day two and the wind is relentless and for sure more drama is on the cards.
10:15Once again, it's going to be about avoiding damage and staying under control.
10:20Up to 25 knots and more. This is going to be a big test.
10:24And indeed it does test the fleet. Prevets will lead race three and are pulling away downwind.
10:29And then their sail blows apart and hands the race lead to Paprec.
10:34The French and Paprec go on to win by more than 400 metres.
10:39That's another great race by Paprec and they slide through the finish line.
10:44That's already their second win here in Lanzarote.
10:47Next race sees Platoon Aviation leading, but the German team lose their third spinnaker in only the fourth race of
10:53the regatta.
10:54And again, they slide backwards.
10:56The spinnaker has exploded again. That's so painful for Platoon.
11:02Through all of this drama, Paprec managed to stay consistent.
11:06They're super fast, but manage the risk and are conservative in all their maneuvers.
11:11And with the fourth in race four, they lead the regatta after the second day.
11:16Sled are absolutely in contention, poised just two points behind the French team on Paprec.
11:25The same strong trade winds which have challenged the fleet and shredded so many sails make Lanzarote the perfect playground
11:33for wind and surf sports and bring proponents from all over the world.
11:41The place here is just fantastic. We had the great opportunity to go wing foiling.
11:46So we were five, six people from the different teams on the water and we had a fantastic station.
11:53So surfing, wind surfing, wing foiling, whatever you want, you will always find a place to do it.
11:58So it's a it's a great venue.
12:03I've always liked sort of a little bit, you could call it semi extreme pro amateur extreme sports and hobbies
12:10on the side.
12:11It's just always like feeling alive with a little bit of action going on around me and feel it keeps
12:17you young.
12:17So I enjoy it.
12:18Bitter rivals on the water challenging for the podium in Lanzarote are great friends and share some moments on the
12:26surf and in the wind.
12:27It's a strong fighting and we are fighting hard on the water with the other team.
12:31But yesterday during this wing foiling session, we had a good time with our friends from Al Kedo and Sled.
12:38And so it's it's always nice to be all together.
12:42But the question is, why is Lanzarote so windy? Why has it become a mecca for wind sports?
12:48This is one of the classic trade wind venues. And so what's a trade wind?
12:52It's a persistent geographic wind.
12:55And here it's set up because of the pressure gradient between the Azores High, where we've got air pushing down.
13:02And then we've got Africa, which in this time of year, especially the Sahara, Morocco, Western Sahara, it's desert.
13:10It just radiates. The sun hits it. It gets hot, air rises. And so that's low pressure.
13:17So we've got subsiding air in the Atlantic pushing down and we've got air rising in Africa and nature abhors
13:25a vacuum and in it comes.
13:27And with the prospects of strong winds every day, there's the possibility this will be a war of attrition.
13:34This is a sure team one regarded because it's a game of attrition.
13:38We're sailing in relatively big sea states, breeze above 20 knots, gear fails.
13:44The less gear you get to fail, the better you're going to result at the end of the day.
13:50Something unique in the 52 Super Series circuit is four different rival teams all sharing data and looking for learnings
13:58together as they all look to improve.
14:01Cooperation between competing teams is pretty rare in sports these days, especially at the Grand Prix level.
14:08But the fact is, is that four teams working together, we get to solutions faster.
14:14We have four sets of data, four sets of experts on the boats. It works pretty well.
14:20They collaborate under the Quantum Sales Initiative, which has proven to be a fast track to a highly competitive level
14:27for new and upcoming teams.
14:30It's hard to develop these boats by yourself. You've got to have at least another boat to compare with and
14:36which sounds like why would you do that with a competitor?
14:39But, you know, even if you know it, doing it is still extremely hard and it brings people up to
14:46a high level very quickly.
14:47They all meet each morning and the performance data from the previous day is reviewed and a detailed weather briefing
14:54for the race course area for the day ahead is delivered.
14:57We'll have a look at some sail shots.
14:59First thing in the morning is the looking of the sails, sail shapes, and so we try and come to
15:05some consensus.
15:06What was the best mass bend? What was the best sail shape?
15:10Jib wires still running quite a bit more depth on the J2.
15:14Our real goal is to disseminate what we can learn from yesterday so maybe we can take it out on
15:20the water today.
15:21We're incredibly fortunate to be able to be part of this great quantum training group because we get to go
15:27into morning meetings every day with legends of the sport.
15:30They fast tracked us and got us up to speed super quickly.
15:36Here in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, Vayu from Thailand are one of 13 teams from 11 different nations.
15:43It's a worldwide circuit. I mean, when you look at the different owners, they're from all over the world.
15:48The Whitcraft family are proud and excited to have their home waters in Thailand, preparing to host not one but
15:56two regattas in early 2027, including the Rolex TP52 World Championship.
16:02Being able to sail from home is incredible, but I'm also very excited to show Thailand and the incredible place
16:09that Thailand is.
16:12Going to Thailand will be the first step. I'll be surprised if we don't expand that internationally. And it seems
16:19like everywhere we've taken this circuit, it's been welcomed with open arms and a lot of excitement.
16:27Whitcraft family sailing started with my parents. They met sailing in Thailand, actually down the road from where the Super
16:34Series will be next year.
16:35My mom managed Ocean Marina Yacht Club. She built the initial breakwater there and got the marina off the ground.
16:44The Whitcrafts remain a family team in every sense, even though they have family members living and working on three
16:51different continents of the world.
16:52They come together all the time to race the family Grand Prix yacht, Vayu.
16:57I reckon you can chip this thing, darling.
16:59We're still a family team with five or six family members on board at any given time.
17:04I'm living in the US at the moment, my brother's in Holland, my parents and uncle and cousin are all
17:09in Thailand, so it's cool to come together at events.
17:15Three, two, one.
17:20Conditions remain relentless in Lanzarote, the winds simply keep blowing and sometimes there's too much to race, increasing the pressure
17:27on the teams all the time.
17:30Day three sees only one race sail because it's so windy.
17:33Trinity win that race, but Alcario from Italy keep themselves in contention in second, with Sled in third.
17:40Paprik get a ninth place, their worst score of the regatta so far.
17:44Paprik just could not get out of the traffic.
17:48That's costly for the French team.
17:50Crossing the line in ninth, their regatta lead is gone and Sled are back on top.
17:58With day four missed because of too much wind, there are actually concerns that it might still be too strong
18:04for the final day.
18:05The pin is set, the pin is set.
18:07But Lanzarote delivers a fitting finale.
18:10Sled lead by four points ahead of Paprik and Alcario as the last day's racing starts.
18:16Two, one.
18:16The winds are very changeable, blowing off the land, it's really hard to read the breeze for the tacticians.
18:22Here we go. This is a day which will decide everything. Three boats are really in the hunt. Now is
18:29the time to perform.
18:31In the penultimate race of the regatta, Sled start well and actually lead at the top turn with Platoon Aviation
18:37second, Alcario are down in sixth and Paprik are seventh.
18:40Once again, it's Sled out in front. That's great racing. Win from here and the regatta could be theirs.
18:47And at the labour turn, it's super close. Alpha Plus get inside Paprik and Sled. Sled then get a penalty
18:54for not staying clear of the French boat at the mark.
18:57That's a penalty for Sled and that's expensive. It really could change everything. Suddenly, it's all hanging in the balance.
19:09At the finish line, Alcario get third, Paprik fifth and even with their eighth, Sled and Alcario go into the
19:17last race tied on points. Paprik are one point behind.
19:21Across the line, Sled back in eighth. It's dead level at the top now.
19:25So it's everything on the line in this last race. Three boats in contention for the Lanzarote title just one
19:32point apart.
19:33Sled are on 21, Alcario Vitamina also on 21 and Paprik on 22. Sled, of course, have won three regattas
19:41back to back.
19:42Alcario Vitamina and Paprik have never won a 52 Super Series regatta.
19:47The warning signal will be at 13.10. 13.10. It will be the last race of the event.
19:55So it's a really high tension start. Everything is at stake. The breeze is in. It's still strong.
20:01It's all about positioning and getting off the line into clear breeze.
20:05At the start, the Italian blue boat is over the start line. They jump the gun and have to go
20:10back and that is expensive.
20:11Individual recall, bow 36.
20:14Alquido are over early. They have to go back. A nightmare start with a title on the line.
20:21Three, six, two, Alcario.
20:23Meantime, Paprik get ahead on the first beat. They're just in control of their main rivals, Sled.
20:28And at the top of the course, they hold the advantage.
20:31Paprik up ahead of Sled, exactly where they need to be.
20:35Oh, that's close. Sled are penalized again.
20:38Hard to believe under the circumstances, under all this pressure, Sled get two penalties in consecutive races.
20:45Will this penalty really decide the outcome of this regatta?
20:49With that penalty on Sled, the pressure has eased slightly on Paprik.
20:53They know what they have to do. They have to stay cool, calm and collected.
20:56Get that blue spinnaker through the finish line.
20:59On the final run, there's a wind shift and the fleet tighten right up.
21:03But through the finish line, it's a second win for Platoon Aviation.
21:05Back-to-back wins and Paprik come through the line in second and get the Lanzarote title.
21:11It's a great win, full of emotions for a team which has been together for so long.
21:16Congratulations to the French. They've done it.
21:19Paprik have won Lanzarote.
21:21Well done to Paprik.
21:23Retention to Paprik.
21:24Merci beaucoup et félicitations.
21:29It was too much emotion for me after we passed the finish line.
21:34Just thinking that the first race in TP that was in 2009 and we have been waiting 70 years for
21:42this win.
21:44So it was really crazy for us today.
21:47And we had also some issues during the race.
21:50We lost the helm and we have been working on the boat the whole race.
21:55So it was really up and down for the emotions.
21:58So for us, it's a big achievement.
21:59I'm very happy for all the team.
22:01I think about the guys that have been racing with us that are not here anymore.
22:07The one that could not come and the one we lost.
22:10So I'm thinking of all of this today.
22:13Thank you.
22:23I was waiting for the last 17 years to win at the end.
22:29And I am so happy.
22:30You can't realize.
22:32You know, I start from nothing.
22:34I start with my family 30 years ago.
22:37First Fregata with Stéphane Neve in Brest.
22:42And so it's something for me.
22:43Incredible.
22:44But the small French team from Brittany, the French Brittany, we were able to win.
22:51Belong all these stars, all these guys.
22:54The best level of the world in sailing.
22:58It's so amazing.
23:02It's going to cost me a lot because I promise a container of champagne.
23:08And I will come back to Lanza Hot with a container for everyone.
23:14After jumping the start gun and having to restart, Alcedo make a great recovery down the final
23:19run, taking places to cross in fifth and get second place overall.
23:25It is the second podium for Alcedo Vitamina, who only joined the circuit last year.
23:30And Andrea Lacorte, his best owner driver.
23:32Fantastic regatta.
23:34We have demonstrated ourselves to the whole team that we can recover from last to third,
23:39from last to fifth in just one downwind.
23:42The boat is fast, the crew is fantastic.
23:44We are pushing hard, hard, hard.
23:46We got penalized in the last regatta because we were already having the taste of the victory
23:50in our mouth.
23:52But okay, we are first owner driver and second overall is a great satisfaction.
23:57This pinnacle of sailing is great.
24:01For the world champions, it's a difficult final day with two successive penalties.
24:05They finish up in third place.
24:07It was a very bad day for us.
24:10We did a few mistakes here and there.
24:13Two very good starts, but we couldn't consolidate.
24:17And a very tricky day.
24:19The fleet was very close and we made a couple of errors on the bottom boat situations.
24:25And that cost us the day and the overall.
24:32And so the final standings for the Marina Rubicon Lanzarote 52 Super Series Sailing Week.
24:37It's Paprec who win on 24 points.
24:39Second, Alcada Vitamina on 26 points.
24:42And third, Sled on 31 points.
24:46So after three regattas, Sled lead on 120 points.
24:49Second, Platoon Aviation from Germany on 137 points.
24:53Third are Alcada Vitamina from Italy on 140 points.
24:56And the regatta winners Paprec on fourth place now on 157 points.
25:18And so the French team do prove that Sled are not invincible.
25:22But it is the world champions who head to Puerto Calero just up the coast in Lanzarote with a 17
25:28points lead at the head of the circuit.
25:30And the first ever adventure in Lanzarote for the 52 Super Series has been exhilarating, demanding and a whole lot
25:37of fun.
25:41So Alcada, thank you very much for all the hard work this week and well done to Paprec.
25:46And the second, Aston Rape is a production of the 8th century.
25:50And now we will.
25:51And the Australian Interim if the national security team does not have any to have a leader in Lanzarote.
25:51A String if the national security team does not have any to have a leader in Lanzarote.
