A true labor of love, Scarlet Deer Inn sets a new standard for creativity in indie gaming. This video explores the unique animation technique where every frame is stitched by hand, creating a tangible, stop-motion-esque world.

00:00Scarlet Deer Inn certainly looks like your standard cosy game on its surface.
00:04It's got those Studio Ghibli aesthetics we know and love, and a fairly bright colour palette
00:08going off its Steam page to keep things cheerful. However, it's actually far more intricate once
00:13you start to look a bit closer. And that's not just courtesy of its dark folk tale which unravels
00:18as you begin to explore what does seem like an ordinary village, or its swelling soundtrack that
00:23knows how to nail each tense, hair-raising scene. I'm actually talking about the characters,
00:27animals, and all of the beasties you meet along the way. It's easy to assume that these characters
00:32just have a textured overlay. In comparison to the hand-painted backgrounds and various
00:36environments you make your way through, they certainly stand out. But there's a good reason
00:40for that. Each character and creature has actually been embroidered, before being animated and put
00:46into the game. Each frame, whether that's the main character at least running across rolling fields,
00:50or a stubborn donkey refusing to move, has been stitched before being digitally scanned and
00:55composed in an almost stop-motion-esque style. Not only does it help the characters really stand
01:00out against these backgrounds, but the constantly moving threads on their sprites really help them
01:04feel alive too. It's like nothing I've seen before in cosy games, and it sets a new standard for
01:11creativity. But I can only imagine how many sprite sheets the duo of Atu games have around their house,
01:16but hey, it's a true labour of love. Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes, you can pet all
01:22of the
01:22animals too. Be sure to follow us here for more gaming news.
