00:00We did get another update yesterday.
00:02The Falcons have extended Javon Dexter to a four-year, $78 million extension
00:06that includes $46.5 million guaranteed.
00:09He was traded for on August 30th.
00:12I had a one-word thought to this one.
00:14Huh?
00:16I was like, what?
00:17Yeah.
00:18Where did that come from?
00:19So, man, I didn't know.
00:23You thought he was getting extended after week three this year?
00:28Well, no, not after week three, but as soon as they traded for him,
00:33I was like, there's no way you're trading is the way you like draft picks.
00:37And even though they didn't really give up anything much,
00:39as soon as they traded for him, I was like, he's in a contract year.
00:43He just came from the team that Ian Cunningham came from.
00:45Ian Cunningham was one of the big guys.
00:48You don't hear a lot about the role of assistant GM's play,
00:51but he was a big proponent of drafting him there.
00:54Yeah, I agree with that.
00:54And he pushed for that.
00:55And so what I'll say is I think I read it during bath time.
01:03So I'm trying to get over what happened to the Braves.
01:06I pull up my phone real quick, got her settled.
01:09She's kind of playing in the bath, and I go, whoa, okay, yeah.
01:14But had you asked me the day the trade was made what I thought of it,
01:20I believe I even said I think that you'll see him extended.
01:23I don't believe this trade was made for him to be just a stopgap player on this team
01:31because of the way everything panned out.
01:33And then he goes out and has the first three weeks that he has,
01:36which if you're a stat reader, a box score reader, you're going to say,
01:40the guy hasn't done anything.
01:42But if you actually watch the games go a little bit more advanced
01:45with some of the pressures he's created, you'd go, that makes sense.
01:50But you wanted to extend him the day you traded for him
01:52because you wouldn't have traded for him if you didn't.
01:54He's had a good first three weeks.
01:56If he continues this, he's going to get more expensive.
02:00Go ahead and do it.
02:02So I think the timing of it is on a Wednesday in September.
02:08You just didn't expect it maybe that early.
02:10But, yeah, it was a move that as soon as they made for trade for him,
02:13I did expect them to extend him unless he just bombed it.
02:18I think that's fair.
02:19I think that I just thought that the runway building up to that
02:21would be a little bit different.
02:23And you're right.
02:24I think if you're his agent, I can't remember who it was,
02:28but I think if you're his agent, you're watching him tee off
02:32in a little over 30 snaps against a rookie left guard making his first NFL start.
02:39Drew and Jason Rosenhouse.
02:40I knew it was one of the big ones.
02:42It was Drew Rosenhouse.
02:43If you're Drew Rosenhouse, you're on the phone immediately going,
02:46yeah, I'm tearing it up.
02:47If you're pushing back, you're going, yeah, dude.
02:50You know what I mean?
02:51That was a good matchup for him.
02:53I mean, he was literally my great when we talked about good, bad, and the ugly.
02:57I'm like, Javon Dexter was un-friggin'-believable, him and Cam Thomas.
03:02I just thought it just felt extremely early.
03:06I thought maybe you'd get midway through the year, the bye week conversation,
03:10start talking about what the defensive line is going to look like.
03:12I didn't see this one coming.
03:14I mean, honestly, you could have told me that Sidney Brown got extended,
03:19and I would have believed it before this one.
03:22I think if you just point to Thursday night as the reason,
03:28and I think you know this, and I'm not necessarily saying you're saying this,
03:30but the boat's being missed a little bit.
03:32He was good the first two weeks as well.
03:35I try to look at when guys are extended at the why in deeper than just one game
03:41or two, and again, it goes back to the fact they wouldn't have given up capital
03:46for him with their familiarity with him as far as Ian Cunningham goes if they
03:51didn't think, hey, we want him here long-term.
03:53And I think he probably fits what Ulbricht wants to do as good as anybody because of his size,
04:01his athletic ability, and how well he's quickly fit into this role.
04:06What round did they give him for him?
04:09Fifth?
04:11I want to say...
04:12Is it higher or lower than Juan Neymar?
04:13I want to say they flipped picks.
04:17Okay.
04:18I need to go back and double down on knowing that,
04:22but I want to say that they traded and they flipped picks for him,
04:27and I think a lot of that was to do with Chicago.
04:31Probably what they want to do, he wasn't fitting as well.
04:34Clark Phillips is a future pitcher.
04:37Which, to me, I know the secondary hasn't looked great.
04:42It hasn't been the strength of the defense.
04:43At this point, even though we came in thinking they might be.
04:47But that wasn't a big loss to me.
04:50I just...
04:51I've seen Clark Phillips here for three years,
04:54and nothing screamed to me,
04:56we can't lose that guy.
04:59Yeah.
04:59I agree with you on that one.
05:01And I'm not...
05:02Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's not deserved.
05:04As a matter of fact, it could look like a chess move
05:08when you think of...
05:09I mean, I haven't even gotten deep enough.
05:12Maybe you have this morning.
05:14Where he ranks in terms of how highly he's paid
05:17as an interior defensive lineman.
05:19But I wouldn't think that it's higher than, like,
05:22top 15.
05:23You know what I mean?
05:24So if you're outside of that,
05:25and you're still getting a four-year extension,
05:27this looks like a chess move in two years
05:29when his contract's not even in the top 30 of defensive tackles,
05:32and he's entering his prime, so...
05:33Don't...
05:34Do you...
05:34Am I wrong to think that
05:36Brandon Dorlis is probably getting looked at now
05:38by them as well?
05:39Because he's in year three.
05:41Okay, so I went through this entire situation,
05:44and I would have...
05:45I stopped at Dorlis,
05:47but then I also thought,
05:48okay, I'm pretty sure Mason Smith's the same year as him, too.
05:51Yeah.
05:51Yeah, Mason Smith is the same year as Dorlis.
05:55Yeah.
05:56And I think Mason Smith's been really good
05:57since he got here.
05:59But I don't...
06:00I think he's got a lot...
06:01I think he still has things to prove.
06:03And I do believe that there's something,
06:05even though he's been able to create some pressures,
06:08there's something a little bit different about
06:10pass rush interior guys
06:12than there is run-stopping interior guys.
06:14As far as...
06:14I say all that to say I would think...
06:17Now, I would have said maybe the same thing about Dexter.
06:18I would think that Dorlis would be an off-season one
06:20just because he's got a whole other year left.
06:22But we'll see.
06:23I don't know.
06:24Maybe Ian Cunningham's moving at a different pace than I am.
06:26The guy that might have a chip on his shoulder now
06:29is Devon Diablo.
