The Kerala Home Department has directed the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau to conduct a thorough inquiry into a 2006 case involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The allegations date back to his tenure as the Public Works Department secretary in Kerala, concerning irregularities in the MC Road upgradation project under the Kerala State Transport Project. The probe was originally initiated after Malaysian civil engineer Lee See Been died by suicide, leaving a note that reportedly named Kumar amid claims of corruption and delayed bill clearances. Authorities have revived the investigation following a fresh complaint alleging the initial inquiry was derailed due to external pressure.

00:00Now we're breaking news coming in. This is from Kerala, where Kerala Home Minister has ordered vigilance probe into allegations
00:06involving CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
00:09Vigilance to probe alleged irregularities during Gyanesh Kumar's 2006 tenure.
00:15The probe has been ordered into alleged external influence in case of involving CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
00:21CEC Gyanesh Kumar has been named in allegedly controversial 2006 Kerala case,
00:26where Kerala Home Minister, now Chani Tala, directs vigilance director to conduct a thorough probe.
00:32This case dates back to 2006, when Gyanesh Kumar was Kerala PWD's secretary.
00:38Now this probe follows allegations that original inquiry was derailed.
00:43This is Malaysian engineer Lee C. Bean's suicide note, which reportedly mentioned Gyanesh Kumar.
00:49And vigilance is now going to probe alleged irregularities in MC Road updation project.
00:55The Kerala government has ordered inquiry into the alleged external pressure in 2006 case.
01:01Home Minister asks vigilance to take action based on the probe findings.
01:06For more on that, we have Shibhi Mool joining.
01:07Shibhi, now we're finding that it's not just the EC heat which is mounting on CEC Gyanesh,
01:12but in fact in Kerala there's a new case which has been opened, rather an old case which has been
01:17opened from 2006.
01:18What really is happening there?
01:21Well, you know, Gyanesh Kumar was working as the Public Works Department Secretary in 2006
01:26and there were multiple allegations against him, corruption allegations against him in terms of awarding contract work in connection with
01:36the Public Works Department.
01:38So we're learning that the new development comes in the background of a complaint and alleging that back in 2006,
01:47it's a probe was initiated against Gyanesh Kumar, but using his political and internal influence, he escaped the case.
01:53So this should be considered right now is what the complaint that it is.
01:58Going to the complaint, the Home Minister felt that there is, you know, concrete evidence to, you know, relaunch investigation
02:04into it.
02:04And that's how the Home Department has now directed the Visitors Director to conduct a probe into it.
02:10In fact, in connection with the Malaysian contractor's suicide back in early 2000s,
02:16in one of the suicide notes, Gyanesh Kumar's name was allegedly mentioned.
02:20Right, so this is a 2006 case which is now getting reopened in Kerala
02:24because the Home Minister is saying there is enough evidence now to carry a probe
02:28because at that time the probe was derailed.
02:30Thank you so much for joining in with those inputs, Shibhi.
